Chapter 6 Who Comes?
I hadn't recovered from the shock when I heard Qu Mo say, "Now you're one of them. You can see them wherever you go. It's not a good thing for people to see ghosts. Because ghosts will ask people for favors. If you don't do it, they might pester you."
Qu Mo had barely finished speaking when the person who had been squatting at the tunnel entrance popped up beside me: "Got a smoke? Give me one? Just light it and put it on the ground."
I actually had cigarettes on me. I had secretly smoked behind my dad's back since I was in junior high. I hid my cigarettes in my close-fitting pocket.
I quickly took out a cigarette, lit it, and placed it on the ground.
The person took two hard puffs before saying, "There's someone in the sewer ahead. Whatever she asks you, do what you think is best!"
I looked in the direction he was pointing. There was indeed a dark sewer entrance over there. The edge of the well was still emitting wisps of cold air, making it look like someone was pressed against the well opening, slowly breathing.
I subconsciously took a step back, but Qu Mo strode towards the well opening: "When ghosts ask you for favors, they will give you some reward. You gave that ghost a cigarette, so he told you to be careful of the well opening."
"The bigger the favor a ghost asks of you, the greater the reward. Do you want to try it? What will the ghost below the well give you? Maybe he can help you kill me?"
I tentatively took a step forward, then retreated.
Qu Mo looked at me with a half-smile and said, "Are you afraid to go forward? Or do you not want to make a deal with a ghost?"
I shook my head slightly, "Neither. If the ghost in the sewer could kill you, I definitely couldn't do what he asks. And he can't kill you either. Otherwise, you wouldn't be standing by the sewer."
"Smart!" Qu Mo turned and walked towards one side of the tunnel. I followed closely behind him.
As I walked past the sewer well, I heard a woman's cry behind me: "Come back! Come back! You can see me... only you can help me. I died so unjustly. No one will avenge me! Help me... please help me?"
The woman's cry sounded heartbreaking, but I kept my head down and followed Qu Mo out of the tunnel.
Just as I was about to step out of the tunnel, the woman shouted, "You can't help me now, but can you help me in the future? You are the only one who can see me. No one can help me but you."
I hesitated for a moment, then quickened my pace again.
The woman screamed, "You're not even willing to give me a promise? You heartless bastard, you'll definitely die a horrible death. You wait. When you walk this road again, I will definitely kill you."
I turned my head and glanced into the tunnel, seeing a pair of eyes filled with resentment.
Qu Mo laughed at this moment: "You want to kill her?"
Before I could speak, Qu Mo said to himself, "You have a clear understanding of yourself. You know very well what you can do and what you can't do. You also know whether you have the qualifications to give someone a promise. You're not stupid enough to show off your chivalrous heart everywhere."
Qu Mo suddenly said sharply, "Tell me, do you want to kill her? Tell the truth."
"Yes!" I was telling the truth. I could see the ghost, but I had no ability to help her. I didn't even know if I could survive today, so what right did I have to give her a promise?
The ghost wanted to kill me without asking why, which indeed made me angry, even murderous.
Qu Mo sneered and turned around, "Follow me. If you fall behind by ten meters, I'll kill you."
After Qu Mo finished speaking, he took a step forward. Qu Mo's seemingly ordinary step spanned more than five meters. When he took the second step, he would inevitably leave me more than ten meters behind.
As soon as I hesitated, I felt a burst of palpitations. It was like a small animal being stared at by a venomous snake, wanting to run but losing the instinct to escape, only able to tremble as it watched the snake's fangs bite into its throat.
Qu Mo sneered and raised his foot forward again.
The moment before his foot landed, I ran forward with all my might, closely following behind him.
At that time, all I knew was that if I didn't follow him, I would definitely die at his hands. If I followed him, I might find a chance to escape.
Qu Mo, who was walking in front, heard me catch up and said "Smart" with a smile, then quickened his pace.
I ran quickly behind him all the way, never letting myself leave the range he had specified.
I didn't even have time to think about why I was running so fast before Qu Mo led me in the direction of home.
Qu Mo didn't stop until he was almost at the entrance of my village. He raised his hand and grabbed a stone by the roadside. The stone, which was more than one person tall, was hollowed out like tofu in his hands.
Qu Mo naturally tightened his grip on the stone in his hand, and the stone in his hand flowed down from between his fingers like fine sand by the river.
Qu Mo said lightly, "We're almost at your house. You can try shouting for help. If someone comes to save you, you can take the opportunity to escape. You have plenty of opportunities before you get to your doorstep."
