Chapter 168 Pressing Closer, Part 2

Chapter 1 Wang Peng Returns

In the evening, Old Man Wang had just returned with the groceries when he saw Wu Peng come back.

"Why are you home so early today?" Used to his grandson working overtime and coming home late, the old man wasn't quite used to him being back so early.

"I quit my job. I won't have to work overtime anymore." Wu Peng put down his bag, took the groceries from the old man, took off his shoes, and headed for the kitchen.

The old man stood there, stunned, and didn't come to his senses for half a second. He didn't even have time to change his shoes before rushing into the kitchen in a fit of anger. "You brat, what did you just say? You quit your job? Who told you to quit? You, you're going to be the death of me!"

Wu Peng calmly rinsed the rice and started cooking. "Didn't you think I was working too hard with all the overtime? So, I just quit my job. That makes things easier, right?"

The old man grabbed a rolling pin and whacked Wu Peng on the backside with it.

Wu Peng didn't expect the old man to be so unsportsmanlike and could only hug his bottom and dart out of the kitchen.

The old man chased after him, hitting him, while Wu Peng dodged around the house, begging for mercy. "I'm doing everything you asked! What more do you want?"

"You go back to work for me right now!"

Wu Peng stubbornly stuck out his neck. "The Jia Wenjun case is one I've been following and running all over for. Now that it's about to have results, I'm being kicked off. You can't treat people like that. If I can't participate in the Jia Wenjun case, I don't want to do any other cases."

The old man raised the rolling pin. "You, you keep talking about Jia Wenjun. Don't you know that nothing good ever comes from being involved with her? Look at her parents, look at you, look at Lawyer Liu. I'm not letting you participate in her case for your own good. Don't be ungrateful."

Wu Peng was so angry he laughed. To keep the old man from worrying, he insisted that he had fallen himself. "Didn't I tell you, my injuries were from a bicycle accident? I was rushing and having bad luck. As for Lawyer Liu, that was just the receptionist accidentally spilling something. It was completely an accident."

The old man snorted. "That's because you're young. Where do so many accidents come from in this world?"

Wu Peng paused for half a second. He knew his car accident definitely wasn't an accident, but what about Lawyer Liu?

He had just had this thought when he denied it in his heart. Qing Zi had spilled it unintentionally. What was wrong with him? After hearing the old man's words, he was starting to overthink things.

"Forget it. I can't reason with you. Anyway, I've already quit. You don't have to worry anymore." Wu Peng rubbed his bottom, which had been hit several times, and sat down on the sofa.

"You, you finally graduated and were about to become a formal lawyer. How can you just quit like that? Are you trying to anger me to death?" The old man raised the rolling pin, still wanting to hit him.

Wu Peng didn't dodge. "Come on, come on. Hit me as hard as you can tonight. Vent all your anger. Anyway, I only have one thing to say. If you don't let me follow the Jia Wenjun case, I won't go back to the law firm."

The old man held the stick in the air for a long time, but in the end, it didn't come down. Finally, he lowered his hand and sighed heavily. "Do whatever you want!"

Hearing the sound of the old man slamming the door, Wu Peng didn't feel good either. He got up, went to the kitchen, made the food, put it on the table, and then knocked on the old man's door.

"Grandpa, I'm going out for a bit. I've made dinner. Remember to come out and eat."

Hearing the door close, Old Man Wang, who was still fuming, opened the door and saw that the brat had made him food but hadn't eaten himself. He sighed heavily in his heart.

He thought his grandson was more obedient than his son, but now it seemed that they were both stubborn and wouldn't listen to anything. He couldn't understand what benefits Jia Wenjun had given the brat to make him so devoted to working for her.

Thinking of Jia Wenjun, the old man's anger flared up again and he could only take a blood pressure pill.

At this time, Wu Peng walked out of the community gate and bought some fruit from a fruit stand.

Looking over from the fruit stand, directly opposite was Lü Maowang's water store. At this time, Lü Maowang was cursing his apprentice with his back to the door. Seeing his sturdy back and height, Wu Peng withdrew his gaze and returned to the community with the fruit.

Outside, the night lights were just coming on. The aroma of food from upstairs came in through the ventilation pipes, but Jia Wenjun's parents had no appetite at all. Ever since they learned that their daughter's case had taken a turn for the worse, the two old people had been frowning every day, hoping that Wu Peng could bring them some of the latest information.

Just as Jia's mother urged her husband to call Wu Peng, the doorbell rang.

Jia's mother quickly went to open the door and found Wu Peng standing there with fruit.

"Little Wu, come in quickly." Jia's mother saw that he had brought something and declined, "We're all so familiar, it's enough that you came. Don't buy anything anymore."

Wu Peng put down the fruit in his hand and sat to the side. "Sister Jun asked me to buy you some fruit. She said Uncle Jia should eat more bananas to supplement potassium, and Auntie's skin needs to eat more things with high vitamin C content so she can recover better."

Hearing Wu Peng say this, the couple's eyes turned red. Their daughter was in the detention center, but she was still worried about their health. Their daughter was so good, how could she have ended up like this?

Jia's mother sat next to him and asked worriedly when she saw that he still had bandages on his arm, "How did you get hurt?"

Wu Peng didn't want to hide it from them. "I suspect the mastermind behind the scenes did it. Our inspection and the series of actions we took before must have made the other party unable to sit still."

Jia's father and Jia's mother's faces changed when they heard this. Jia's father said, "Did you report it to the police? Have the police found anything?"

"I've already told the police. They're still investigating."

Hearing that the case had new leads, the old couple had new hope. At the same time, they told Wu Peng to be careful, and then be careful again.

"Little Wu, when will the results of the clothing test be available?" Jia's father asked.

"It should be soon. But the final result may be that something is detected, or it may be that nothing is found."

Jia's mother asked, "Even if there is a result, will it help Jun Jun get out?"

Wu Peng paused. "It won't help much, but it will make the people who bullied Sister Jun pay the price."

"No matter what, those people must pay the price." Jia's father said resentfully.

Thinking that his daughter had been bullied on the ship, he couldn't help but want to beat those who bullied her.

Wu Peng comforted Jia's mother, who looked worried. "No matter what, the police are still investigating. Sister Jun's emotions have stabilized. She won't give up until the last moment. Even in the worst-case scenario, we will try our best to get Sister Jun a reduced sentence."

While speaking, Wu Peng heard the sound of a door opening and closing outside. Because it was across the hall, the sound of the door opening and closing was particularly clear.

t father saw him listening intently and explained, "It might be Dean Bai coming home."

"Does he come home at this time every day?" Wu Peng asked.

Jia's mother thought for a moment. "Pretty much."

He had specially gone to see the pet hospital that Bai Ma Shan opened. It was open from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m., with two shifts of people working there.

Wu Peng asked, "What time did you go to bed last night?"

Jia's mother thought for a moment. "Pretty late. Recently, your Uncle Jia and I haven't been able to sleep."

"Then, between 10:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m., did you hear the door opening and someone going out?"
