Chapter 169 Pressing Closer, Part Three

Jia Shu and his wife exchanged a look. To be honest, they were only concerned about their daughter these days and hadn't paid attention to anything else.

But since Wu Peng asked, they seriously tried to recall the events of the night before last, and finally shook their heads. "It doesn't seem like we heard the sound of the door opening or closing. We don't remember very well."

Wu Peng spoke with them for a while longer before getting up to leave.

As he walked into the lobby downstairs, he ran into Bai Ma Shan, who was carrying groceries.

They were both taken aback. Wu Peng remembered the sound of the door opening and closing across the hall. It seemed Bai Ma Shan's son had returned.

Wu Peng took the initiative to greet him. "Director Bai, just getting off work?"

Bai Ma Shan smiled. "Yes. Attorney Wu, you're really dedicated, coming to see Little Jia's parents every day."

Wu Peng also smiled. "It's my duty. I'm paid to solve problems. Your son seems to be back."

Bai Ma Shan lifted the pile of groceries in his hand and shook it. "Yes, it's the weekend. The child just finished a mock exam, and the school canceled evening self-study tonight, letting the students go home early. So, I went to the market to buy some nutritious food to make him dinner."

"You're such a good father. If my dad were like you, I'd be laughing in my sleep."

They joked for a few more sentences. At the elevator entrance, Bai Ma Shan waved goodbye and went inside.

Back home, Bai Ma Shan saw that his son's bedroom door was closed. He changed his shoes, washed his hands, and quietly opened his son's door. He saw Bai Xun sitting at his desk, reading an English book.

Bai Ma Shan didn't say anything, turned around, closed the door, and left.

Hearing the sound of the door closing, Bai Xun immediately threw the English book aside, revealing the comic book hidden underneath. At the same time, he put on the half of the headphones he had just taken off.

After preparing the meal, Bai Ma Shan knocked twice on his son's door.

Bai Xun quickly cleaned up his things before coming out to eat.

At the dinner table, Bai Ma Shan divided all the rice and dishes into two portions, one for each person.

Ever since Bai Xun could remember, his father hadn't allowed him to talk at the dinner table, and he had to finish all the food given to him, no matter how much, regardless of whether he liked it or not.

The father and son silently finished their meal. Bai Xun washed the dishes. Bai Ma Shan, sitting on the sofa, glanced at the time and asked, "How did you do on the IELTS exam last time?"

Bai Xun said blandly, "Not good."

Bai Ma Shan's face darkened. "What do you mean, 'not good'?"

"I didn't pass."

Bai Ma Shan stared at him coldly, then suddenly got up, went into his son's room, opened the drawer, lifted the mattress on the bed, and opened his schoolbag. Sure enough, he found the various "useless" books he had hidden and the extremely boring figurines in Bai Ma Shan's eyes.

Bai Ma Shan swept all these things onto the floor and then made Bai Xun tear up the comic books page by page in front of him, and then stomp on the toys until they were all broken, before letting Bai Xun throw them into the trash can.

Bai Xun didn't say a word throughout the entire process. This wasn't the first time this had happened. He expressionlessly smashed the things he treasured, and then cleaned them up.

He knew that if he showed even a hint of reluctance, this matter wouldn't be over today.

Bai Ma Shan's anger had just subsided after watching him finish all this, when he saw Bai Xun pick up the bedroom door key and prepare to leave.

"Where are you going?" Bai Ma Shan stopped him.

"To throw out the trash."

"Don't you dare! Go read right now!" After saying that, he stretched out his hand with a stern face. "Give me your phone!"

Bai Xun frowned and didn't move.

Bai Ma Shan raised his voice. "Are you deaf? Can't you hear me?"

Bai Xun hesitated for a few seconds, but finally handed him the phone from his pocket.

"If you don't pass the exam next time, you can just study at home. I'll give you back your phone when you pass the exam and get accepted to a foreign school!"

"I don't want to go abroad. Why do you insist on sending me away?" Bai Xun finally couldn't hold it in anymore and looked annoyed.

"I'm sending you out to broaden your horizons. Don't be ungrateful. You have to go!" Bai Ma Shan didn't leave any room for discussion.

Bai Xun looked at the man opposite him, who was staring at him intently with a ferocious expression. He knew that no matter what he said, his father wouldn't change his mind.

Bai Xun stopped talking, turned around, returned to his room, and slammed the door shut.

Immediately afterward, a loud noise came from the room, the sound of desks and chairs being kicked over one after another.

Bai Ma Shan's temples throbbed, and the veins on his hands bulged. He returned to his room, pulled out a baseball bat from under the bed, and wanted to teach his son a lesson. Just as his hand was placed on his son's doorknob, there was a rapid knock on the front door.

Bai Ma Shan took a deep breath, put down the baseball bat, and transformed back into the amiable and kind Director Bai the moment he opened the door.

The downstairs neighbor said unhappily, "Director Bai, what's going on at your house? Making such a racket at this hour."

Bai Ma Shan hurriedly apologized. "I'm sorry. I accidentally knocked over a chair while moving things. We won't move them anymore. Sorry, sorry."

After closing the door again, Bai Ma Shan darkly tried to push open his son's room, only to find that it was locked from the inside.

Bai Ma Shan warned his son inside in a low voice, "I'm doing this for your own good. Don't force me to take action. Clean up your things, and don't let me see the room in a mess tomorrow. Keep it down."

After saying that, he didn't care how Bai Xun felt and left with a dark face.

Monday morning, Wu Peng was awakened by the old man's knocking before his alarm even went off.

He covered his head with the blanket and said unhappily, "What is it? I don't have to get up early today."

The old man forcefully opened his door, came over, and yanked at his blanket. "You brat, get up and go to work!"

Wu Peng grabbed back the blanket and said dejectedly, "Didn't I tell you? I quit my job. I don't have to go to work anymore. Don't disturb my sleep. I'm very tired."

The old man pointed at Wu Peng, who was stubbornly refusing to get up. "You, are you getting up or not? If you don't, I'm going to get the rolling pin."

"It's no use even if you beat my butt to a pulp. If I'm not allowed to continue with Jia Wenjun's case, I won't go."

"No, why do you have to help her so much?" The old man didn't understand.

Wu Peng scratched the messy hair on his head. "I'm not helping her. This is the first case I've followed from beginning to end. Why should I let someone else steal my thunder?"

The old man became even more exasperated. "You're still pretending with me, aren't you? I know what you're up to! This case is definitely going to be lost. It's not even certain if anyone is willing to take it. Tell me, what thunder is there to steal?"

Wu Peng got up. "Grandpa, it's not right for you to say that. Let me put it this way. I think the real killer in this case is someone else. If we win this case and clear Jia Wenjun's name, I'll become famous overnight. Why would I let such a good thing go to someone else?"

After hearing his grandson's words, the old man didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "Those things were done by Jia Wenjun. Otherwise, why would the police arrest her? I can understand that you want to stand out in the law firm, but there's no hope for Jia Wenjun's case. Besides, I don't want you to get hurt again because of her matter."

The old man told Wu Peng what Lu Maowang had said and the rumors he had heard outside. Wu Peng was silent for a while, and then said, "So, these words of yours, were they told to you by Lu Maowang?"

"Yes."

Wu Peng said with a serious face, "Grandpa, listen to me. In the future, if he comes to find you again, remember to be careful."

Old Man Wang frowned. "What do you mean?"

"I can't tell you too much. In short, when you come into contact with those people from the ship, whoever it is, you have to be careful. I'm not arguing with you about whether Jia Wenjun is the murderer, but now things haven't come to light yet, so be careful not to be used by people with ulterior motives."

The old man was shocked. "Are you saying..."

"Grandpa, being a lawyer is indeed dangerous, but if I back down this time because I'm afraid of danger, then what about next time? When you let me become a lawyer, you should have thought of this."

Old Man Wang was speechless. "But..."

"Grandpa, I'll ask you one more time. Do you still want me to be a lawyer?"

The old man looked at his grandson in front of him, whose eyes were clear and firm, and finally sighed softly, patting him on the shoulder. "Go ahead, and be careful."
