This is a very comfortable city, including both the people and the city construction. I stood on the side of the road watching the wide road and the passing vehicles. Even though it was my first time in Nanjing, I felt a sense of familiarity, perhaps because it's also in the Jiangnan region.
In early spring, people on the street hadn't taken off their coats yet. The weather wasn't very good today; it was a bit misty, and the temperature wasn't high. Luckily, it wasn't raining. As my eyes were focused on the distant scenery, a woman in a beige woolen coat walked slowly past me. I took a closer look and saw that she was a very beautiful woman with a great temperament. She looked like she was older than me, and she was holding car keys in her hand, so she must have come from the parking lot next door.
The moment we brushed past each other, her eyes met mine. She seemed very well-mannered. Even though I was looking her up and down, she didn't show any disgusted expressions. She just walked forward calmly. I admired women like this; they exuded feminine charm and used their own cultivation to block the gazes of others, especially from strange men, giving off a feeling of inviolability.
"A'Che, let's go." My mother's voice suddenly came from behind.
I immediately turned around. She had already come to my side and said again, "Let's go. Mom will take you to look around Nanjing."
"Where are we going?" I asked curiously.
"Out-of-towners usually go to the Fuzi Miao and the Zhongshan Mausoleum."
I smiled and said, "Okay."
My answer was very quick, perhaps because the beautiful woman from just now had increased my good impression of Nanjing. It’s true that a city can leave a deep impression because of a certain person, just like my mood at this moment.
I strode over and immediately drove the car out of the parking lot. Before my mother got into the car, I looked at the restaurant. It was almost cleaned up; there were still some odds and ends left to be finished.
"It's almost done. Xiao Zhang will arrange the final cleaning," my mother said after getting into the car.
"Then are we leaving tomorrow or going back tonight?"
"We'll go to Suzhou tomorrow to take a look."
I was already planning to drive, but when I heard this, I immediately stopped and said anxiously, "I won't accompany you to Suzhou. Can you go by yourself?"
"How long does it take to get from Nanjing to Suzhou? It's not convenient for me without my car."
I frowned. Seeing this, my mother immediately corrected my attitude, "I originally wanted you to stay for a while when you came here last time, but now things are being handled so quickly. You're not even willing to go to Suzhou?"
"I like Suzhou very much, but that's another matter..."
"It's your mentality that's the problem. Since you've come, you have to be patient. What will happen if you don't see Pei Shi Yu for two days?"
"Alright, I'll go with you, but let's make it clear. Pei Shi Yu's dad is waiting for me to start working. I'd prefer to go to Fuzhou tomorrow. Once things are settled here, I can wholeheartedly go to work there."
"Are you that uninterested in the catering business?"
"It's not that I'm not interested. Compared to the two, I prefer to work at Pei Shi Yu's company. As for the restaurant, we'll talk about it later."
This time I explained very patiently.
"I don't care," my mother's attitude became even tougher.
"You didn't raise me since I was little, so our relationship is just different. If it were someone else, you, as the mother-in-law, should be happy that my girlfriend is pregnant. Your indifferent attitude is very disappointing."
"How many times have I met your girlfriend?"
"Does that have anything to do with it?" I asked her, not understanding.
"How can it not? If a relationship isn't established, how am I supposed to care about her?"
"Who was it who said before that they couldn't communicate with You Xiang's girlfriend and would get along with my wife in the future? Now it's like we've offended you."
I brought up an old issue. My mother suddenly laughed and replied after a while, "Isn't You Xiang's girlfriend not back yet? It's not until the two families meet this Sunday that your relationship will be officially confirmed."
Seeing that her tone had softened, I started to tell her my views, "Our relationship is also a bit strained. What you want is an obedient son, like You Xiang. And what I want is a mother who cares about me and goes along with me."
"There are no such parents in the world. It's right to care about you, but it's impossible to go along with you. Right things deserve encouragement, and wrong things should be corrected. Otherwise, how can you succeed?"
"At my age now, it's self-motivation. I accept encouragement, but correction is unnecessary."
My mother didn't argue with me anymore. The car had already reached the vicinity of the Fuzi Miao. My mother pointed in one direction and said, "The parking space is over there."
Just as I was about to turn the steering wheel to turn over there, my phone suddenly rang. I picked it up and saw that it was Pei Xianglong calling. I didn't dare to neglect him, so I immediately answered and called out, "Dad."
Pei Xianglong asked me anxiously, "Where are you?"
"I came to Nanjing today."
Pei Xianglong paused for a moment and then told me, "Shi Yu was sent to the hospital..."
Before he could finish speaking, I immediately asked nervously, "What's wrong?"
"She fainted. Come back quickly."
"Was she injured?"
"I'll tell you when you get back," Pei Xianglong replied evasively.
"Tell me the truth, otherwise I'll be worried and distracted while driving."
"There's a possibility of a miscarriage. I'm also very busy today. Her assistant told me."
My breathing suddenly became rapid. I couldn't tell if I was worried about Pei Shi Yu or the baby in her belly. I think it was both. My mind was suddenly in chaos. The unattainable situation of not being by Pei Shi Yu's side was very frustrating. Pei Xianglong had already hung up the phone.
I quickly parked the car on the side of the road, took a deep breath, and adjusted my mentality. Now I should remain rational and calm.
"What's wrong? Who called?" my mother asked, looking at my face.
"Pei Shi Yu fainted and might have a miscarriage," I told her directly.
"How could she faint for no reason? Then hurry back to Hangzhou. I'll go to Suzhou another day."
"Why don't you drive? I'm a bit agitated right now."
"Okay, get out."
I immediately switched seats with my mother. For the first time, I felt so anxious and worried for someone other than myself. In the past, as long as I was safe, there was no one for me to worry about. I also instantly realized that I was no longer living alone. Perhaps because it was the first time this had happened, I realized that my life had completely changed.
