170 Rushing to the Hospital
The traffic was heavy on the way back to Hangzhou. My mother drove very cautiously. Sitting in the car, all I could think about was Pei Shi Yu's appearance when she fainted. As for the miscarriage, I still held a glimmer of hope because Pei Xianglong had only said it was possible.
I irritably took off my coat and threw it on the back seat. The car wasn't going fast. I glanced at the speedometer; around 100 kilometers per hour.
"A little faster," I urged.
"There's no use being impatient. We'll get home eventually. There was less traffic when we came."
She was driving in the second lane. I watched the cars in the first lane pass us one by one. I couldn't push her too hard on the highway. The road sign indicated the next exit was only 2 kilometers away.
"When we get to the service area, I'll drive."
"Let me drive. I understand how you're feeling right now."
I didn't argue. Setting aside my current mood, she could at least go ten kilometers faster at a normal speed. I simply closed my eyes to rest. I had woken up early, and before long, I drifted off to sleep.
I was awakened by a scream. I opened my eyes to my mother's voice. I immediately looked out the window and saw a car speeding past us. A little curious, I asked, "What happened?"
"I was about to change lanes, and this car just came up. Why are they driving so fast?" my mother complained.
"That's their lane. Didn't you check your mirrors before changing lanes? It would be all your fault if there was a collision."
"Didn't you think I was driving too slow?"
"You need to accelerate safely. Changing lanes randomly like that is the most dangerous thing you can do."
"Luckily, we avoided it. That scared me to death."
"Did you just get your license?" I asked, curious.
"Twenty years."
Hearing her answer, I just smiled. At least I was safe in terms of driving experience. At this time of year, it got dark quickly. Night fell rapidly. I looked at the time; it was already past five o'clock. The car had long since entered Zhejiang province. We were getting closer and closer to Hangzhou. I finally breathed a sigh of relief.
The traffic had only increased. On the fourth lane, trucks streamed by, one after another. I rubbed my eyes and started to focus, picking up my phone and dialing Pei Xianglong's number...
"Are you back yet?" he asked as soon as he answered.
"Almost there. How is Pei Shi Yu?"
"She's fine now. Come straight to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University when you get to Hangzhou."
"I got it."
Pei Xianglong seemed pretty anxious. He hung up right after I finished speaking...
"How is she?" my mother asked, worried.
"He said she's fine now. She should be okay."
"Is she just too tired lately? Why would she faint for no reason?"
"She must be tired. The foreign trade business is tough."
"Old Wang told me in detail about what happened to her brother. It's a pity."
"I told you too."
"I didn't really feel anything at the time because I didn't know who it was."
"Are you going to the hospital with me later?" I asked hesitantly.
"Of course I am. How can you even ask that? It makes it sound like I don't care at all."
"Didn't you say you weren't that familiar with her yet?" I teased.
"Is this the time to be joking around?"
"Didn't he say she's fine? But I've been worried to death this whole way," I said, exaggerating.
"Worried to death, yet you were snoring in your sleep?"
"I was just sleeping to pass the time. Besides, someone like me, who can face heaven without shame and the earth without embarrassment, Pei Shi Yu will definitely be safe and sound," I argued.
Finally, we reached the toll station. After paying the toll, I had her pull the car over to the side. I switched seats with her and sped off towards the city.
Entering the city center, the car finally arrived at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University, stopping and starting in traffic. Pei Xianglong was already waiting there at the entrance of the outpatient clinic. I immediately went up to him and asked, "Does she need to be hospitalized?"
"Of course. We don't know if the child can be saved."
"Didn't you say she was fine?"
Pei Xianglong, who had been walking quickly ahead, stopped immediately when he heard my words and asked, "Are you more concerned about the adult or the child?"
"The child is certainly important, but in my heart, Pei Shi Yu is more important." I watched his expression carefully.
My mother had been quite nervous for me, but upon hearing my answer, she immediately tried to ease the atmosphere and urged, "Let's go up quickly. We were worried to death on the way here."
"This brat is heartless."
Seeing that he was still complaining, I grabbed his shoulder and reiterated my stance: "Don't worry, it doesn't matter if the child can't be saved. There will be others in the future. As long as Pei Shi Yu is safe and sound, that's all that matters."
"Hmm, those are nice words. Since you're free these next few days, the responsibility of taking care of Shi Yu falls on you."
"Isn't that what I should be doing? Who else would take care of her if I didn't?" I replied confidently.
The hospital was crowded with people. The elevator entrance was packed with people waiting. I stared impatiently at the numbers on the elevator, until there was a "ding" sound. I quickly squeezed inside, but as soon as I took a step, Pei Xianglong pulled me back.
"No need to rush. There are too many people. The elevator next to it is here too."
I hesitated and stepped back, quickly glancing at the elevator that was about to close. Actually, we could have squeezed in, but Pei Xianglong's mood was different from mine. He had already seen Pei Shi Yu, while I was still lost in various thoughts because Pei Xianglong hadn't revealed too much about Pei Shi Yu's current condition.
After going up, I finally saw Pei Shi Yu in a private room. Her face was facing outwards, and I could immediately tell that her complexion was very poor. Her skin was already pale, and now she looked sickly white. Hearing the noise, she immediately opened her eyes. I went up and took her hand, asking, "Are you okay?"
"Yeah," Pei Shi Yu hummed in a spoiled tone.
"How did you faint? My mother came too."
Upon hearing that, Pei Shi Yu moved slightly, but my mother immediately stepped forward and held her down, saying, "Don't move. Is your body feeling uncomfortable?"
"I'm okay."
Pei Shi Yu, after putting aside work matters, was actually quite feminine. At this moment, she was like a little girl, appearing particularly gentle. This was the first time I had seen her like this. Appropriately, I touched her forehead. There were no signs of a fever, so I asked again, "Why would you faint for no reason?"
At this time, Pei Shi Yu extended her right hand. Seeing the bandage wrapped around it, she said softly, "I don't know either. I just suddenly fainted."
My mother immediately asked her, "Are you anemic?"
"A little."
I saw Pei Xianglong quickly come to the bed and say, "A little? The doctor just said that you need to take good care of your body, otherwise the child won't be able to be saved. Stay in the hospital for a few more days and just rest."
"Then what about work?" Pei Shi Yu immediately asked.
"You don't need to worry about that. I'll hand it over to your assistant. Lin Che will take care of you. Just stay here and relax."
