Chapter 206: Chapter 205: Emergency Mission
After a few people finished eating, they helped deliver things to various households and then went back. Lin Wan was left cleaning the kitchen and the house for half a day. The bed was covered in snack crumbs left by Pidan. Fortunately, the quilt had been put away in advance.
These days, Han Yi was relatively free after the New Year and would occasionally walk with him in the courtyard. It was too cold, so mostly they stayed indoors.
Sometimes, when Han Yi came home early, the two of them would snuggle in bed and read books. Of course, most of the time they couldn’t finish reading because Han Yi would keep disrupting.
Han Yi somehow managed to acquire many military books, some that she hadn’t seen on the market, along with many storybooks and miscellaneous foreign books.
Lin Wan hadn’t expected that Han Yi’s English was even more fluent than hers.
"Dang Bing has encountered many foreigners over the past few years. At first, he wasn’t familiar with them, but gradually learned a bit by bit for easier communication."
Lin Wan found it hard to imagine what mission Han Yi needed to undertake to have contact with foreigners. After asking a couple of questions, Han Yi just vaguely brushed her off.
"Is there a learning class in the camp? I heard you could study at the Military Academy in the camp too. If there’s a chance, you should try to get a spot."
"There isn’t any in the team, many who want to learn do it privately. If there are spots available, the team will prioritize recommending people. You want me to attend the Military Academy?"
"Times are progressing; everyone is scrambling to learn and go to college now. Even Mom, who is illiterate, has registered for a class. No matter where you are, having knowledge always brings more opportunities, especially for a team like yours that needs talent. Being knowledgeable will be beneficial to you in the future."
"I have thought about this, but attending military school takes two years, and I might not get the chance for a promotion during these two years."
"With higher education, there’s no worry about lack of promotion opportunities."
"That’s true." Han Yi thought his wife made sense, and he realized he needed to seriously consider his future.
On the eighth day of the New Year, Han Yi went to the camp early but returned within a couple of hours.
"Why the rush?" Lin Wan asked puzzled.
"I have to go on a mission this afternoon, the return date is uncertain, so..."
"Is it to the front?" Lin Wan’s first thought was this, knowing Han Yi often went there before.
Han Yi paused for a moment, nodded awkwardly, and comforted Lin Wan by saying, "I’ll come back safe and sound. I’ve talked to the cooking team; if they go to the city, they will come and pick you up. If you feel bored, you can go home first. I’ll be back once the mission is done."
"Do you have to go?" Lin Wan asked reluctantly. They had been married for nearly half a year, spending very little time together. Finally, he had a long vacation, and now he had to leave again. The front-line situation had lasted for years, and she was scared.
"It won’t take long really, I’ll return as soon as possible. If there’s a chance, I’ll give you a call. The situation is tense, so I might not be able to reach you."
"I don’t want you to leave." Lin Wan tightly embraced Han Yi, unwilling to let go. Even though Han Yi didn’t say so, she knew it was going to be dangerous.
"Wanwan, don’t worry, I’ll come back safely. Didn’t we agree to have a baby?" Han Yi glanced at his watch. Taking out a lot of tickets from his pocket, he handed them to Lin Wan. "The team just issued some support funds, you take them and buy whatever you want. Don’t let yourself suffer." Time was tight, he couldn’t afford to linger here, indulging in sweet farewells with his wife.
Even though she didn’t know exactly where he was headed, Lin Wan knew Han Yi was a sniper, and missions often involved solo action or working in groups. Even though he wasn’t the one in command, being a sniper was inherently a dangerous position, having to fend for himself when hungry or injured.
With red eyes, Lin Wan simply helped Han Yi pack a few clothes, stuffed the remaining large package of dried meat from home into his bag, along with some regular cold medicine and anti-inflammatory drugs that they had brought. Just in case.
As Han Yi was about to leave, Lin Wan almost burst into tears, suppressing her emotions to prevent Han Yi from seeing her teary face and worrying.
"Don’t worry about me outside, I’ll take a car home if someone from the team goes to the city. You don’t need to worry about the house either, I’ll take good care of Grandma. You must be very careful out there."
