Chapter 18 A Surprise After Returning Home

A few people, seeing they had no weapons, then seemed to remember something and said to Lu Heng, "Take us to the guardroom at the entrance. They usually keep some electric batons there."

At least it was a weapon, better than them walking around outside empty-handed.

Lu Heng had no objections. He had indeed seen electric batons in the guardroom earlier, and quite a few of them, but he hadn't taken any.

After all, those things were useless once the power ran out. The entire city would lose power soon anyway, and the electric batons would just be short sticks once their charge was depleted.

He led everyone to the guardroom, and they happily took several electric batons each.

The police officer in charge glanced at Lu Heng and said, "You should take one too. Remember to return it here, along with your long saber, once it's safe."

Lu Heng felt a slight warmth in his heart and nodded, then went to grab an electric baton and clip it to his waist.

In the guardroom, the police officer looked around at his colleagues. "Does anyone here have family not in this city? If so, you can come to my place for a few days first, and then you can go check on your homes once things stabilize."

Then, two young colleagues stepped forward. They had just been assigned this year and usually lived in the dormitories within the building.

The police officer then arranged for a few more colleagues, asking them to travel together if their homes were along the same route.

Fortunately, they usually assigned men to guard duty at night, so it wouldn't be convenient to bring along female colleagues.

It wasn't that he discriminated against women; after all, in their dictionary, protecting women was a matter of course. If there were female colleagues, they would have to send them home first.

Seeing that there was nothing for him to do, Lu Heng was about to turn and leave quietly.

"Young man, how did you get here?" the police officer's voice interrupted his stride.

"Oh, I drove here."

Lu Heng felt a bit of despair at that moment. His car was taken from his spatial storage, and it had no license plates.

Was he walking right into trouble?

Not only was he carrying a long saber, but he was also driving a high-end car without a license plate.

Ah! He wished a lightning bolt would strike his brainless self.

Lu Heng stiffly turned around and pointed at the car parked at the entrance. "My car can normally seat seven people. If you squeeze, you can fit a few more. After all, these are extraordinary times; we can overlook overloading, right?"

"Where are you planning to go later? I'll see if it's on the way."

He didn't want to put a civilian at risk during such a dangerous time for them.

"I plan to return to the suburbs. I live in the suburbs now," Lu Heng said truthfully.

The police officer looked at the people who had already split into two groups, then glanced at the other team.

"Well, it's not on our way. All of us live in the city."

After a moment of hesitation, he still asked, "Would it be convenient for you to take these few people home first? I know this is quite immoral of me to ask..."

"Director Zhou, I drove to work yesterday," a male colleague interrupted before he could finish.

Oh? He was a director.

"Alright, then you don't need to drive them. I drove yesterday too, so you should go home first." He paused and then added, "Remember, you must return your long saber and electric baton after it's safe, or I'll put out a city-wide warrant for you."

Lu Heng's mouth twitched slightly. "I will."

As he turned to leave, he still kindly reminded them, "Driving is actually quite dangerous. I encountered quite a few zombies along the way. The sound of the car is too loud and will attract them."

"You'd best pick a few sturdy police cars to drive, preferably higher SUVs."

He wasn't a saint. Having survived in the apocalypse for several years, he was accustomed to the indifference between people. If it weren't for the unintentional kindness shown by that police officer earlier, he wouldn't have even bothered to remind them.

After speaking, Lu Heng, carrying his long saber, bid farewell to the group. These people were police officers, so their physical fitness was naturally better than that of ordinary people. As long as no accidents occurred, their chances of reaching home were likely not low.

After all, today was only the first day zombies appeared, and the zombies would only become active at night.

Getting into the car, Lu Heng put his long saber back into his spatial storage. After encountering the police officers and killing zombies in the building, he hadn't bothered to collect their crystals.

Those people were probably too nervous to notice the faintly glowing crystals.

He glanced at the time; sunset was not far off. He started the car and quickly drove towards the villa in the suburbs.

He didn't want to fight zombies at night; it was too tiring.

He had been away for a day; he wondered how the director at home was doing.

Driving quickly through the city, occasionally a zombie would rush towards him. He remained the same, crashing through those in front and leaving those behind to eat his exhaust fumes.

As he drove out of the city, the number of following zombies gradually decreased. Seeing that they could no longer see the car, the zombies remained in place, wandering aimlessly.

Lu Heng returned to the villa before dark. He looked at the intact lock on the gate, and then Lu Heng got out of the car and opened the door.

Then he drove the car into the yard.

Getting out of the car again, Lu Heng quickly returned to the villa.

As he went upstairs, he took off his outer jacket. His clothes for the day were dirty and splattered with zombie blood.

He put the discarded jacket into a trash bag and then into his spatial storage, waiting to throw away the dirty clothes the next time he went out.

As a grown man, he wouldn't wash clothes. Besides, he had plenty of clothes in his spatial storage, so there was no need to waste time washing them.

He quickly went to the door of the cat room on the third floor. The fence at the door was still standing, showing no signs of being damaged.

It seemed that the little thing hadn't turned into a zombie cat.

If it had turned into a zombie cat, the fence would have likely been broken down by now.

He called out, "Director."

There was a quick response from inside. "Here, here."

Lu Heng...

Was he hallucinating?

A small girl's voice had just come from that room.

"Who?" Lu Heng cautiously drew a dagger.

This was indoors, and he had heard a girl's voice. There was no need to draw his long saber and scare anyone.

However, the little orange cat that was now walking unsteadily towards the door, opening and closing its mouth as it walked, emitted a voice that was a girl's: "It's me, Master."

The dagger in Lu Heng's hand dropped.

He had never encountered something so terrifying, not even in the eight years of his previous life.

"Director, are you talking?"

"Yes, Master, don't doubt it."

What the hell was this supposed to be?

Could this cat be a cat demon itself?

"Master, what are you thinking? I'm just a normal cat."

Just normal? Was this still called normal?

Why didn't you speak when I first bought you?

If you had spoken back then, I wouldn't have bought you for anything.

You scared me to death!
