Watching the Fatty’s skilled movements, I hadn’t expected him to be so knowledgeable about these antique firearms.
As the Fatty loaded the bullets and then slung the gun around his neck, I asked him, “What are you doing?”
“Self-defense,” the Fatty said righteously. “Master Xiang, don’t you remember the monster we encountered in the underground fortress last time? This is a land of the little devils, who knows what might pop out. I call this being prepared.”
As he spoke, he rummaged through the box and pulled out a Sugiura-style officer’s pistol. He told me that this pistol was used by officers in the past and taught me how to use it.
“Why are you giving this to me?” I asked gruffly.
The Fatty said, “Master Xiang, listen to me. Take this pistol. If something really happens later, it might save your life. If it’s useless, when we get back, you can just find a place to throw it away.”
Hearing him say that, I hesitated for a moment, took the gun, and stuffed it into my pocket.
While the two of us were examining these firearms, a loud noise came from not far away, clearly something being knocked over.
We hurried over and found Yang Hanxue banging on a huge iron box. This box was similar to the shipping containers at the docks, over two meters high and at least seven or eight meters long.
When the Fatty and I arrived, Yang Hanxue had just knocked the door open.
The moment the box door opened, a cloud of dust billowed out. Fortunately, the Fatty and I were both wearing gas masks.
As for the others, I noticed that Yang Hanxue didn’t seem to take the dust seriously at all, and Zheng Shuxuan didn’t even blink.
As for Guan Zhenwan, she merely brushed it away lightly with her hand. 138 reading network.
The Fatty and I exchanged a glance. I saw in his eyes that he seemed to be saying, “Are these people normal?”
After the overwhelming dust slowly settled, the Fatty and I finally took off our gas masks.
Looking into the metal box, it seemed there was something bound inside.
When the flashlight beam shone inside, we finally saw clearly that a monster was chained at the very back.
This monster was about two meters tall, covered in green hair, with festering wounds in many places. Its eyes were closed, and its open mouth revealed jagged teeth.
Even from five or six meters away, a putrid smell could still be detected.
“What is this?” the Fatty asked, blinking his eyes.
I was also bewildered. Although this monster had human-like features, it didn’t resemble a human at all.
“Could this be a wild man?” Guan Zhenwan said.
“Wild man?” I asked, a little confused.
She nodded. “Haven’t you heard the legends of the Shennongjia wild man?”
Only then did I realize what she meant by “wild man.”
Legends of “wild men” exist all over the world. China’s Shennongjia wild man, the “Yeti” of the Himalayas, the Almas of Mongolia, all have various legends still circulating today.
Overseas, there are the Chuchuna of Siberia, the Chemoost of Africa, the Hibagon of Japan, the Yowie of Australia, and the Sasquatch of America, among countless others.
Looking at the monster before me, it really looked a bit like a wild man.
I just hadn’t expected such a wild man to have been captured and imprisoned here by the little devils back then.
“Master Xiang, why do you think the little devils captured this wild man?” the Fatty asked.
I said, “Who knows? Maybe they wanted to take it back for research.”
“Damn it, these dog-like little devils, they don’t even spare our wild man. Are they even human?” the Fatty cursed indignantly.
Just as I was about to chime in with a curse, I noticed that the wild man had actually moved!
Its movement was clearly visible to everyone, and even Yang Hanxue couldn’t help but take a step back.
“Holy crap! This wild man is still alive?” the Fatty exclaimed. “It’s been locked up for so many years and it’s still not dead?”
I was also a bit stunned. Before I could say anything, the wild man suddenly opened its eyes and lunged at us, its speed incredibly fast.
If it hadn’t been for the chains, it would have probably flown right in our faces!
The entire iron box shook as it thrashed, and the chains on its body looked like they would snap at any moment!
“Could this be a zombie?” the Fatty cried out.
“What zombie?”
“A wild man zombie!”
Hearing the Fatty say that, I was also taken aback. It wasn’t impossible.
“Quick, lock this thing up, it’ll be a disaster if it gets out later,” the Fatty said.
I nodded and signaled to Yang Hanxue to help.
Then we prepared to close the box door. Who knew that as we rushed over, the monster became even more agitated? It looked at me and Yang Hanxue as if we were some delicious meal, drooling and constantly reaching for us.
With a “clang,” the chains on the monster suddenly broke, and in an instant, the monster was in front of me. Fortunately, I dodged quickly, or I would have been dragged away!
As I dodged, the Fatty shouted, “Master Xiang, move!”
The Fatty took the submachine gun from his shoulder and unleashed a barrage of fire at the monster.
With a series of gunshots, the monster was instantly pushed back, staggering and falling backward.
Before I could breathe a sigh of relief, the fallen monster stood up straight again.
The Fatty had run out of bullets and was reloading. In that moment, the monster was about to break out of the iron box when Yang Hanxue rushed forward and delivered a flying kick, sending the monster back into the box.
“Close the door!!”
He shouted, and I quickly shut the box door. The moment the door closed and the bolt was secured, we heard banging from inside.
Clearly, the monster was unwilling!
This was my first time encountering a wild man zombie. This thing was impervious to blades and guns, and its body was huge. If it had gotten out, I estimated that none of us present would have survived.
For safety’s sake, we moved some more boxes over and blocked the metal box door to prevent the monster from escaping.
After completing all this, we were all exhausted.
We took out the compressed biscuits and bread we had brought with us and ate some, finally catching our breath.
After eating and drinking our fill, I spread the map I had with me on the ground and asked everyone for their opinions on where to go next.
Zheng Shuxuan suggested that we split into groups to save time in Kuncheng.
Her proposal was for her to be in a group alone, Yang Hanxue and Guan Zhenwan in another, and the Fatty and I in a third group.
I was initially a bit hesitant about this arrangement, worried that she, a woman, might encounter danger.
But then I thought, she’s an immortal being, what was there for me to worry about?
So, we went ahead with this grouping and began to move separately.
