Chapter 295: Chapter 295: No Way Back (Part 1)
The movable hospital bed was quickly pushed over and moved into the research lab.
She stood at the doorway, her mind a tangled mess, with an indescribable sense of trepidation in her heart.
She raised her hand, only to see her right hand tremble uncontrollably.
Raina North was terrified.
Suddenly, a surge of resentment surged inside her.
If she hadn’t saved Baby Hawthorne before, if she hadn’t spent so much time with him and developed feelings for Baby, and he was just a stranger, she would definitely be much calmer than she was now.
Affection begets fear.
She was just an ordinary person in this mundane world and ultimately couldn’t avoid being affected by worldly emotions.
"Mommy, let it go, let’s just let it go."
Casper North looked at Raina North trembling all over and suddenly regretted it. He shouldn’t have messed around with step-dad. His eyes were red as he said, "At worst, we’ll use my blood to replace step-dad’s; it won’t let him die."
"If it was that simple, would it still be so troublesome? Where’s your brain? Eaten by a dumb husky?" Raina North slightly kicked her son: "Move aside, don’t get in the way here."
Raina North drove Casper North away and turned to look at Leila Foster: "Is everything ready?"
Leila Foster looked serious: "All the medicines and equipment are ready."
Raina North nodded.
"Young Madam!" Brolin suddenly knelt on one knee and said in a low voice: "The Young Master and the Hawthorne Family are entrusted to you."
Raina North did not look at Brolin; she closed her eyes, took several deep breaths, and only after her wildly pounding heart gradually calmed down did she open her eyes again.
She gave Leila Foster a glance: "Let’s go."
The door of the research lab opened, and Raina North stepped inside.
After the routine disinfection, she took out specially made silk gloves and put them on before pacing to the workstation.
Various kinds of agents were densely arranged on the workstation, and the overhead brilliant shadowless lamp shone brightly, illuminating the space as if it were daytime.
Raina North picked up a sealed reagent bottle containing a black liquid. As the liquid moved along the bottle wall, its darkness inexplicably weighed heavily on one’s heart.
Raina North wanted to open the reagent bottle.
Suddenly, her fingers slipped, and with a bang, the reagent bottle fell onto the workstation, fortunately without breaking.
Raina North’s face turned pale.
This was an extremely toxic poison, where just one drop could be lethal.
Leila Foster quickly picked up the reagent bottle and handed it to Raina North.
Another assistant couldn’t hold back from saying: "Young Mistress Hawthorne, I know you are exceptionally talented in pharmaceuticals, but your heart is clearly chaotic now. You are a renowned expert and should know better than I that extracting agents always demands precision. The ones waiting for the medicine are the current and future leaders of the Hawthorne Family. If anything goes wrong, even being Young Mistress Hawthorne, you won’t escape the same fate as us. You hold many lives in your hands now."
Raina North pressed her lips together tightly; if possible, she would rather not be here.
In the past, when her mentor was around, he had said that although she was indeed extraordinarily gifted, she was too prone to acting emotionally.
This gave her a benevolent heart but also prevented her from becoming a revered Apothecary God.
In this field, every single one who reaches such a legendary status is inevitably ruthless. Without ruthlessness, how can one bear to test drugs on oneself?
She wasn’t ruthless enough, so when her mentor was on the brink of death, she couldn’t bring herself to test drugs on him. Now, for the same reason, because the one needing saving was Baby Hawthorne, whom she regarded as her own child, she couldn’t be as calm as before.
But, her back was against two lives, leaving her no retreat.
Especially Elias Hawthorne.
She couldn’t believe that such a calm and wise man could make such a crazily deliberate decision to poison himself and become her first test subject.
