Chapter 67: Chapter 67: Zhao Lin’s Battle Against the Tyrant
Inside the dilapidated store, the goods that used to fill the shelves have long disappeared.
Even the remaining few items are now rotting and foul-smelling.
Inside, many splattered bloodstains could still be seen, long congealed and dried into black patches.
There are several corpses visible in the store, but oddly, none of them show signs of being torn apart.
Zhao Lin glanced at them briefly and determined that these bodies were all the work of humans.
Evidently, after the apocalypse erupted, people resorted to every means possible to acquire supplies.
Human morality was thrown aside; even for a loaf of bread, someone could stab another in the back.
Looking at the desolation before her, Zhao Lin furrowed her brow tightly.
"Damn it, the food is becoming increasingly scarce now."
Looking at her somewhat deflated backpack, Zhao Lin felt quite helpless.
The entire morning she had searched the neighborhoods and stores within a two or three-kilometer radius around the police station, yet still came up empty-handed.
Yesterday, everyone who accompanied Zhao Lin on an outing died in the Sunshine District, resulting in no one willing to venture out with Zhao Lin for supplies today.
However, the reserve resources at the police station are dwindling; if they fail to find enough supplies soon, sustaining everyone will be impossible.
To ensure everyone could continue on with enough resources, Zhao Lin had no choice but to search for funds alone.
But even as an Evolver, she only has two hands and two legs, unable to manage quick searches.
All morning, she’d only gathered two bottles of mineral water, a bottle of juice, two pieces of bread, and a block of chocolate – hardly enough for herself.
"It seems post-apocalypse living in the city requires attention not only to zombies but also to these increasingly scarce resources."
Zhao Lin sighed softly, her gaze full of helplessness.
The start of the apocalypse signaled the world ceasing, and city resources that used to update daily became limited products.
Looking at these corpses from human hands, Zhao Lin felt both anger and helplessness in her gaze.
As a police officer, combating crime was her duty before the world ended.
Yet she never thought that what she once upheld, societal order, would collapse entirely when zombies appeared...
Zhao Lin clasped her fist and then reluctantly loosened it.
Taking out the map she carried, she checked the surrounding areas.
Most places on the map were marked already – sites she’d searched before.
Even unmarked places, like the shop she was currently in, had experienced plundering from other survivors.
"If there’s no food anymore, I honestly don’t know what everyone will do next..."
Bam! Bam! Bam!
Suddenly, amid Zhao Lin’s contemplation, distant gunshots rang out.
"Oh no! Something’s happened at the police station!"
Upon hearing the shots, Zhao Lin’s complexion changed instantly; she sprinted towards it.
Returning to the police station, Zhao Lin was instantly stunned by what she saw.
Bam! Bam! Bam!
The Tyrant Zombie, led by Lu Chuan, had arrived at the police station.
However, since Lu Chuan anticipated the station’s defenses, he hid among various buildings upon arrival.
The massive Tyrant appeared in the survivors’ sight; the police fired without hesitation.
But this zombie was terrifyingly powerful, charging directly to the station entrance while enduring bullets.
Despite reinforced doors, they now seemed precarious under the Tyrant’s crazed strikes.
Survivors inside the station were all pale with fright – never had they seen such a terrifying Evolved Zombie in their two months of apocalypse survival.
Especially civilians who’ve relied on police aid, never scavenged for resources, never faced zombies – they were more bewildered.
The iron-door thuds from zombie blows were like heavy hammers on their hearts.
As the station’s iron door threatened to break under the Tyrant’s assault, everyone held their breath, eyes full of terror.
The Tyrant Zombie’s massive body, and power beyond comprehension, drove the crowd into despair.
Zhao Lin arrived just as the Tyrant Zombie crazily battered the station doors.
Fearing the door collapse, Zhao Lin rushed forward without hesitation.
Without a word, she raised her gun to shoot the Tyrant Zombie.
Bam! Bam! Bam!
Ignoring everything else, Zhao Lin fired at the zombie, trying to divert its attention.
It worked – upon seeing a human firing at it, the Evolved Zombie felt gravely provoked.
Roaring madly now, its enormous claws unleashed terrifying power.
Hearing gunfire outside, everyone inside the station reacted, hurrying out to investigate.
They realized it was Zhao Lin, who had ventured for supplies alone today, returning single-handedly to divert the zombie.
Survivors who had mocked Zhao Lin that morning suddenly changed their tune, all faces warmed and delighted.
"Officer Zhao, please save us!"
"Officer Zhao, quickly divert this zombie. Otherwise, the door will be breached."
"Officer Zhao, aren’t you the one always protecting the defenseless survivors like us? If the zombie gets in, none of us will survive; please lure it away!"
The survivors sobbed, viewing Zhao Lin as their savior.
Engaged in shooting the zombie, Zhao Lin paused hearing their voices.
The gunfire halted; discontent reverberated inside the station.
"Officer Zhao, didn’t you say you could revive yesterday? Was that a lie?"
"Since you can revive, dying once more shouldn’t matter – exchanging your life for ours, isn’t that right?"
"True, as an Evolver, you can revive, so why fear? Divert the zombie quickly!"
Once sobbing survivors sounded impatient toward the end.
Zhao Lin tightly clenched her fist, feeling tremendously conflicted.
Yet gazing at her police badge on her chest, thinking of her duty as an officer, determination flashed through Zhao Lin’s eyes.
She continued shooting to attract the Tyrant Zombie, deciding to lead it away.
Lu Chuan watched from the shadows, shaking his head helplessly.
"This woman... she’s admirably stupid indeed..."
