After hanging up the call, Zhan Mohan went to the bathroom to wet a towel and placed it on Wei Yumeng’s forehead. He then called her name twice with concern.
“Wei Yumeng, Wei Yumeng…”
“Zhan Mohan, I feel so unwell. My head hurts so much, and I’m so hot.”
She panted with her small mouth slightly open, her face flushed red, and her hands fumbled with the quilt.
Seeing how uncomfortable she was, Zhan Mohan, not being a doctor and unable to alleviate her pain, could only hold her close, gently stroking her back and murmuring soothing words.
“Jing Yan will be here soon. Can you hold on for a bit?”
“I’m so hot…”
Wei Yumeng felt as if her entire body was burning. She wanted to push the quilt away.
Zhan Mohan, though not knowledgeable in such matters, knew that one shouldn't get cold when having a fever. He recalled that sweating might help reduce the fever.
He pulled the quilt back over Wei Yumeng.
“Even if you feel hot, you need to bear with it, or you’ll feel even worse later.”
Mu Linjing then knocked on the door. “Mr. Zhan, it’s time to eat.”
Zhan Mohan wanted to get up, but Wei Yumeng tightly clutched his sleeve, mumbling as if in a dream.
“Don’t go, don’t leave me…”
“I won’t leave. I’ll just open the door. You lie down first.” Zhan Mohan carefully placed her back on the bed and went to open the door.
Mu Linjing saw Zhan Mohan opening the door only now. She intended to ask something, but before she could speak, she noticed the towel on Wei Yumeng’s forehead.
She asked anxiously, “Mr. Zhan, what’s wrong with Yumeng?”
“She has a fever. I’ve already asked Jing Yan to come over. We’re trying to cool her down with physical measures for now.”
Mu Linjing was shocked. “Then you should send her to the hospital quickly.”
“She doesn’t want to go to the hospital.” If Wei Yumeng had been willing, he would have already rushed her to the hospital.
The doorbell rang. Zhan Mohan walked towards the door.
“You watch her. I’ll get the door.”
As he reached the entrance, he saw Chu Zi'an had already opened the door. Jing Yan seemed surprised to see Chu Zi'an and then quickly walked inside.
Zhan Mohan stepped aside. Jing Yan put down his medical bag, took off the towel, and felt her forehead.
“The fever isn’t too high yet, but we need to take her temperature.”
He took out a thermometer, then paused. He turned to Zhan Mohan and said,
“You can do it.”
Otherwise, his brother might get jealous again.
Zhan Mohan took the thermometer and sat by the bed. He unbuttoned Wei Yumeng’s shirt and placed the thermometer under her armpit.
Mu Linjing, also worried, asked, “Doctor, is Yumeng’s fever serious? Does she need to take medicine?”
“She will need fever reducers. There’s no other way to bring the fever down,” Jing Yan replied seriously.
Mu Linjing’s expression immediately changed. “Ah… she needs medicine? Can’t we try physical cooling methods instead?”
She was concerned about the baby in Wei Yumeng’s womb. If she took medicine now, the baby would surely be lost. Crucially, she couldn’t make the decision. If she took medicine and Wei Yumeng recovered to find out, she wouldn’t be able to bear the responsibility.
Jing Yan chuckled as if hearing a joke. “Young lady, her fever is quite high. While it’s not extremely severe, I can’t guarantee how long physical cooling will take. If it doesn’t subside and instead worsens, wouldn’t that be a bigger problem?”
Mu Linjing became even more anxious. She walked outside. Chu Zi’an was about to go in. Mu Linjing grabbed his arm.
“Come here for a moment.”
Chu Zi’an had overheard their conversation outside.
He frowned and looked at Mu Linjing. “Is her fever very high?”
“The doctor inside said she needs medication. Otherwise, if it gets worse, it might be more troublesome.”
Chu Zi’an whispered to Mu Linjing, “How can a pregnant woman take medicine? If she takes medicine, the baby will be lost.”
He remembered Yang Tao mentioning that Wei Yumeng had a miscarriage before. It wasn't a simple miscarriage but an induced labor at four months, which had severely damaged her body. It was a miracle she could get pregnant again.
If she couldn’t carry this child to term, she might never have the chance to be a mother again.
He knew how much Wei Yumeng cherished this child. Moreover, if this child wasn’t Zhan Mohan’s, it would be a fatal blow to him. He didn’t want to miss this drama. Even if it was just to embarrass Zhan Mohan, he had to help Wei Yumeng protect the child.
Mu Linjing also looked helpless. “I know what you’re saying, but she has a fever, and the doctor wants to give her medicine. What reason do we have to stop them? Should we really tell Mr. Zhan that Yumeng is pregnant and the child might not be his?”
“This way, I’ll call Yang Tao. You go in and stall Zhan Mohan and the others. Absolutely do not let them give the medicine to Wei Yumeng.”
Mu Linjing pondered for a moment and felt this was the only viable plan for now.
“Alright, hurry and get Dr. Yang here. I’ll go in first.”
Chu Zi’an left with his phone.
Mu Linjing returned to the room. Jing Yan was looking at the thermometer.
“It’s over thirty-eight degrees Celsius. Let’s start with fever reducers. We’ll check again in an hour.”
As Jing Yan reached into his medical bag to get the prepared fever reducer, Mu Linjing quickly stepped forward.
“Wait a moment. Does this fever reducer have any side effects? I heard some fever reducers shouldn’t be used casually. And if it’s not that serious, shouldn’t physical cooling be enough?”
Jing Yan looked at Mu Linjing. She had a cute face and seemed shy and timid, like a girl next door.
Considering she was Wei Yumeng’s good friend, he made an exception and explained.
“Young lady, there are precautions to take with this fever reducer, but it’s not as severe as you say. Besides, Yumeng has taken fever reducers before without any adverse reactions. So, don’t worry.”
Jing Yan took out the medicine and prepared to hand it to Zhan Mohan. Mu Linjing immediately asked again.
“Then you haven’t said why she has a fever. Didn’t Mr. Zhan disinfect and treat her wound earlier? Why is she burning up? Could there be other complications? Could you check again thoroughly?”
Jing Yan found the young lady a bit peculiar. He subconsciously glanced at Zhan Mohan.
Zhan Mohan walked up to Mu Linjing. The man looked down at her, exuding an overwhelming sense of pressure, making Mu Linjing feel breathless.
His voice was sharp, carrying an imposing aura.
“Mu Linjing, I’m asking you, is Wei Yumeng pregnant, which is why she can’t take fever reducers?”
“No, Mr. Zhan. Are you mistaken? I’m the one who’s pregnant. Yumeng isn’t.”
Mu Linjing forced herself to suppress her fear of Zhan Mohan and replied with a forced smile.
But how could Zhan Mohan be fooled by her words?
He bent down slightly, his imposing and sharp aura engulfing Mu Linjing. Mu Linjing managed a strained smile, feeling her face twitching.
She could even imagine her current expression looking worse than crying. To protect the child in Wei Yumeng’s womb, she had to persevere.
“No, I am pregnant.”
Zhan Mohan didn’t press her further. He straightened up.
“Alright, since you’re not pregnant, then let’s give her the fever reducer.”
“This…”
Mu Linjing was suddenly at a loss. She watched helplessly as Jing Yan unwrapped the package, took out the pill, held a glass of water, and placed the pill into Wei Yumeng’s mouth.
All she felt was despair. It was over. Everything was truly over now.
