Mu Linjing was the first to see Zhan Mohan, and then she kept telling Wei Yumeng next to her, "Mr. Zhan is back."
Wei Yumeng turned her head and saw Zhan Mohan covered in dust. After a few days, he seemed to have lost a lot of weight, with faint dark circles under his eyes, indicating that he probably hadn't slept well.
Wasn't he with that Jiang Siyu? How could he not have slept well? He should have returned looking radiant.
Zhan Mohan was so perceptive; how could he not have noticed Wei Yumeng's distress? His displeasure was almost written on his face.
Mu Linjing quickly got up and said to Zhan Mohan, "Mr. Zhan, I'll... I'll be going now. You take good care of Yumeng."
Zhan Mohan could roughly guess why Wei Yumeng was unhappy. She had probably gone to the company, and seeing him absent, she most likely ran into Mu Linjing again.
Then, his absence from the company for the past two days would have been completely exposed.
Instead of rushing to comfort Wei Yumeng, he first checked his phone. As expected, she had called him, and it showed as answered.
It must have been Jiang Siyu who answered. He was asleep at the time and hadn't paid attention to the sound.
Zhan Mohan told the maid, "Please escort this lady to the door and help her get a taxi."
"Yes."
After the two maids left, Zhan Mohan walked over and said, "You went to the company today, didn't you? You also called me, and Jiang Siyu answered."
It was no wonder Wei Yumeng was angry because it was true. The other party didn't even know where he had been, always thinking he was working, so she hadn't bothered him much.
But when she finally got through, she had hoped he would give her an explanation. Who knew it would be a fatal blow?
She could still feel that sense of loss, that plunge to the bottom, making her feel like a disheveled drowned rat, almost pushing her to the brink of collapse.
Now, seeing Zhan Mohan, all she felt was bitterness and grievance, yet she stubbornly refused to question him about his whereabouts like a shrew.
Firstly, she had no right. Secondly, it was unnecessary.
She didn't know what status or position she had to question him, especially considering the child in her belly...
However, she couldn't control her emotions, especially during pregnancy, when such sensitive emotions would be amplified.
Forget it, what was there to ask? What good would it do?
She stood up and tried to speak to him in a steady tone, "It's nothing, let it be."
With that, she prepared to go upstairs. Zhan Mohan watched her lonely back, unsure what to say. Perhaps he was too tired, or perhaps...
Wei Yumeng returned to her room. Seeing that he hadn't followed, she felt even more dejected.
Zhan Mohan took a shower and changed his clothes. There were still matters at the company to attend to. He had to deal with them first, as they were waiting for him.
Wei Yumeng lay in bed. It was past midnight, and Zhan Mohan still hadn't come in. Her mind began to wander, wondering what the man was doing, what he was thinking. Every move he made affected her emotions.
Thinking about what had happened in the past two days, her grievances poured out like a flood, tears hot and rolling down her cheeks.
Her heart felt like it was suffocating.
She actually hated herself a little, not wanting to become so fragile, her emotions controlled by someone else.
Everyone thought love was beautiful and desirable, but often, it was a double-edged sword, hurting oneself and others.
That night, she fell asleep with a chill in her body and only a sliver of hope, heartbroken.
Zhan Mohan returned to the room around three in the morning. Through the dim light, he could see the tearstains on her eyes that had not yet dried.
He gently wiped away her tears with his warm fingertips, then got into bed and held her from behind. Wei Yumeng was probably too sleepy and tired to notice him approaching her.
When she woke up the next morning, she felt someone next to her. She opened her eyes and saw Zhan Mohan.
She instinctively sat up. When did this man return to the room? She had no idea.
No wonder she had felt cold all over in the middle of the night and then quickly warmed up; it was Zhan Mohan.
But yesterday, Jiang Siyu had answered his phone, and now, seeing him, her heart ached.
She lifted the covers and got out of bed. As soon as she stepped outside, she received a call from an unknown number, but she still answered.
She was afraid it was from the hospital or an important call.
"Who is this?"
"Miss Wei, your mother has passed away. It seems you don't know yet."
A strange male voice, ethereal and terrifying, spoke to her.
Upon hearing this, she didn't have time to figure out what was happening. She just wondered if it was true.
"You... what are you talking about?"
Wasn't Gu Shuyi doing well in the hospital? How could she have passed away?
"Zhan Mohan killed your mother."
After saying that, the caller hung up. Wei Yumeng's hands trembled uncontrollably, her face turned pale, and her legs felt so weak she could barely stand.
A maid came out and happened to see Wei Yumeng almost sinking to the ground, so she quickly went to help her.
"Madam, what's wrong?"
"I..."
Wei Yumeng had no time to explain anything to the maid. Her hands were shaking so badly she could barely hold her phone steady. She quickly dialed the number, but it wasn't answered.
Then she panicked even more. She suddenly remembered that the person had mentioned Zhan Mohan and rushed upstairs, with the maid hurrying after her.
"Madam, be careful of the steps."
Wei Yumeng directly pushed open the door with force, the commotion loud enough to wake Zhan Mohan. The man frowned and looked at the tense and fearful Wei Yumeng with confusion.
"What's wrong?"
She strode forward angrily and demanded, "Zhan Mohan, what happened to my mother?"
A flicker of surprise crossed the man's eyes. He hadn't expected Wei Yumeng to find out about Gu Shuyi so soon. Even though he was usually calm, he couldn't stay composed for a moment.
But seeing his long silence, Wei Yumeng became even more agitated. "I'm asking you, what happened to my mother?"
Zhan Mohan finally recovered and asked, "Who told you something?"
"Someone called me and told me my mother had died!"
Wei Yumeng was already losing emotional control at this point.
Zhan Mohan didn't know how to tell her. However, now was not the time to dwell on these issues, but rather that she had found out about Gu Shuyi's death.
This meant that trying to keep it a secret was clearly no longer possible.
But he didn't know where to start telling her. What worried him more was her emotional state and the baby in her belly.
