The principle of ensuring Wei Yumeng's survival was unchanging for Zhan Mohan.
Looking at Wei Yumeng's pale face, his heart ached, wishing it were he who lay there instead.
His hands trembled uncontrollably as he touched Wei Yumeng's face, murmuring, "Yumeng, don't be afraid, I won't let anything happen to you."
Wei Yumeng was already somewhat delirious, but she could still hear the doctor's words. In her plans, there was no mention of a cesarean section, let alone a premature birth.
Although premature babies weren't abnormal, she believed that a child who had stayed in an incubator would not be as healthy as one born at full term. Therefore, unless absolutely necessary, she would never agree to a cesarean section.
Seeing her struggle to lift her head, Zhan Mohan quickly propped up her neck, "Yumeng, what do you want to say?"
She shook her head, "Doctor, I don't want a cesarean section."
The doctor was also sweating profusely, various machines connected. Hearing her say she didn't want a cesarean section made him even more troubled.
"Miss Wei, you are currently experiencing irregular uterine contractions due to emotional distress. If you truly do not wish for a cesarean section, then you need to regulate your emotions. Perhaps we can navigate this danger smoothly."
In the doctor's opinion, they didn't quite believe in willpower; they trusted their medical skills, the instruments, and medication. Saying this was merely to get Wei Yumeng to accept treatment quietly.
However, Wei Yumeng took it seriously. Thus, she tried her best to overcome all negative emotions such as anger, fear, and panic, not only for her own life but also for the precious life developing within her.
If something were to happen to the child, how would she explain it to Zhan Mohan? How would she explain it to herself?
This was the first time Zhan Mohan felt helpless. He was right beside Wei Yumeng, yet could do nothing but hold her hand.
He felt a ringing in his ears, hearing nothing but the sounds of the machines and Wei Yumeng's occasional pained groans. His vision was filled only with Wei Yumeng's pained expression, which never seemed to ease.
After an unknown period, the chaotic sounds around him lessened. The doctor gently patted his shoulder, "Mr. Zhan?"
He looked up, somewhat dazed, and saw the doctor smiling relaxedly. "Miss Wei's condition has stabilized. We're going to transfer her to a ward for observation."
Only then did he come to his senses. He saw that Wei Yumeng had fallen asleep. Although her hair was soaked with sweat and her lips were very dry, seeing her brows relaxed and her expression no longer as pained, Zhan Mohan finally breathed a sigh of relief.
After confirming the situation with the doctor multiple times, he followed them to the ward. Fang Xun had already arranged for the young nurse to be taken away; her punishment was outside their jurisdiction.
After settling Wei Yumeng in, Zhan Mohan emerged from the ward, where Fang Xun was waiting.
"Mr. Zhan, the person is gone. That doctor was heavily disguised. I've checked the surveillance, but she used blind spots to evade detection, making it difficult to investigate."
Having personally witnessed Wei Yumeng narrowly escape death, Zhan Mohan naturally wouldn't let this matter go. "Continue the investigation. We must find the mastermind."
Seeing his demeanor, Fang Xun dared not say anything more and immediately set about his task.
Returning to the ward, he sat by the bed, holding Wei Yumeng's hand, quietly waiting for her to wake up.
Wei Yumeng regained consciousness late in the night. She moved her fingers slightly and felt a great weakness throughout her body. Opening her eyes, she saw Zhan Mohan holding her hand, his head resting by the bed. She couldn't help but recall how she had cared for him that night.
Perhaps he was feeling the same way she did then.
Thinking this, she was touched. She moved slightly, and Zhan Mohan seemed to be startled awake. His somewhat flustered expression met Wei Yumeng's eyes, and she couldn't help but gently stroke his face, "You're very tired."
Zhan Mohan tightened his grip on her hand. "Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere? Do you need me to call a doctor?"
She smiled lightly and shook her head. "I'm fine. You should rest too."
Due to excessive physical exertion, she didn't speak much before falling asleep again. Zhan Mohan sat by the bedside, watching her until dawn.
Fortunately, she slept soundly all night. Early the next morning, the chief physician arrived at the ward. After checking all the data, the heavy stone in everyone's hearts finally lifted.
"Mr. Zhan, Miss Wei has passed the danger zone. She needs a few more days of observation in the hospital, and she can be discharged once her condition is stable."
This outcome brought relief to everyone. Mother and child were safe, and the hospital had averted a crisis.
When Wei Yumeng woke up, Mu Linjing, who had rushed over upon hearing the news, was sitting by her bedside. Her gaze swept around the room, and she couldn't find Zhan Mohan, which she found strange.
Mu Linjing, knowing she was looking for Zhan Mohan, informed her, "Old Master Zhan heard about what happened at the hospital yesterday, so he called Mr. Zhan back. He asked me to come and keep you company before he left."
So that was it. Wei Yumeng nodded. If he had returned to the Zhan family, he likely wouldn't be back for a while. Regarding the mastermind, she could only put it on hold and ask him when he returned.
Fearing she might be in a bad mood, Mu Linjing brought a lunchbox from the table to her. "I specifically went to Chenxuan Pavilion to buy this. You like it, don't you? Try it."
Seeing that she had bought such an expensive meal for her again, Wei Yumeng was touched and teased, "Don't worry, I'll have him pay you back later."
After all, Mu Linjing didn't have the financial means to spend so lavishly. Such a meal would definitely hurt her wallet.
Mu Linjing didn't stand on ceremony. "Then remember the last meal too, and help me get that money back."
As they were joking, she suddenly remembered. The last time she met Zhan Yichen at Chenxuan Pavilion, he still hadn't paid her back.
Looking at her phone, she confirmed he hadn't. No wonder she had been feeling a bit short on cash lately. It seemed it was time to collect her debts.
"Linjing, what are you thinking about?"
Wei Yumeng waved her hand in front of her eyes, and only then did Mu Linjing realize she had been spacing out.
Zhan Yichen's matter was not worth mentioning. She waved her hand and showed her phone to Wei Yumeng. "I'll show you something interesting."
With that, she clicked on a video. The person in it was very familiar. It was the video of Old Zhang getting into a fight with Wei Jin at the entrance of the residential complex yesterday.
Presumably, some passerby had filmed it. Although the angle wasn't great, the phone's high resolution captured the distorted expressions of the two people and Wei Jin's injuries clearly.
Mu Linjing was completely enjoying the show. "Look at this old man, how shameless. He beat someone until they were black and blue, their eyes were purple."
Her casual remark, however, caused Wei Yumeng to suddenly snatch the phone and examine it closely.
Mu Linjing was startled by her reaction. "Is something wrong, Yumeng?"
Wei Yumeng stared at the video. It couldn't be zoomed in, so she took a screenshot of Wei Jin's frontal shot and kept enlarging it.
If this face wore a mask and a hat, exposing only the eyes, it looked very much like the doctor who had given her a prenatal check-up yesterday.
Both her left eyes had a patch of purple skin. She hadn't noticed it yesterday, but she had assumed it was a birthmark. Now, it seemed the truth might be different.
Lost in thought, she returned the phone to Mu Linjing. If the doctor yesterday was indeed Wei Jin, where did she get 500,000 yuan to give to that young nurse? Not to mention bribing the lab to get a fake report for her. These were definitely things Wei Jin couldn't accomplish.
If Wei Jin was indeed involved, then there must be someone behind her, providing her with financial support.
However, Wei Yumeng couldn't think of any suspects and felt a headache coming on.
Seeing her furrowed brow, Mu Linjing quickly inquired about the situation. Wei Yumeng then recounted, "Among Wei Jin's acquaintances, I don't think anyone could provide her with so much money."
Unable to figure it out, she was extremely distressed. Mu Linjing had come to alleviate her mood and stress, not to see her like this. Moreover, she had just escaped danger, and it was best to think less about things that would affect her mood.
To spare her the worry, Mu Linjing suggested that Fang Xun investigate whom Wei Jin had been in close contact with recently.
When Wei Yumeng called Fang Xun, he happened to have an update. "Regarding that video you mentioned, I also have another angle from a passerby. I'll send it to you."
