Chapter 421 The Great One Must Not Be Harmed

Wei Yumeng was startled by the commotion at the door and turned to see the doctor who had just performed her prenatal check-up.

She wiped away her tears, "Doctor, is there something you need?"

The doctor seemed unnatural, standing at the door without approaching them. "It's like this, your condition is quite dangerous, and we recommend immediate treatment."

At this, Wei Yumeng's face fell again. She couldn't believe this result. Stubborn as she was, she tightened her grip on Zhan Mohan's hand.

Zhan Mohan understood her intention; another check wouldn't hurt.

Moreover, Zhan Mohan was displeased with the impolite intrusion. Though he couldn't pinpoint why, he felt the doctor was strange. What kind of doctor eavesdrops on patients and their families?

He patted Wei Yumeng's hand to reassure her, then asked the doctor to leave the room first.

The doctor seemed to hesitate, then left after a pause. Zhan Mohan watched her close the door, then asked Wei Yumeng, "Did anything strange happen during your check-up today?"

Although she didn't know why he asked, Wei Yumeng did feel that today's examination procedure was a bit off. Just as she was about to tell him what she found strange, there was another knock at the door.

"Please come in."

To her surprise, it was the same doctor. "Let's start with the IV drip. You can decide on the treatment later."

An IV drip for pregnant women was harmless, so Zhan Mohan didn't object. Soon, a nurse came to administer it to Wei Yumeng.

The young nurse appeared nervous, her hands shaking several times during the process. Although she eventually managed to insert the needle, Zhan Mohan, who was close by, clearly saw the fine beads of sweat on her forehead.

Thinking she was an intern assigned by the hospital, Zhan Mohan stopped her, his face displeased. "Have your head nurse do it. You can go."

The young nurse was clearly startled. She swallowed several times before speaking, stammering, "There's just one last medication to add to the infusion. I'm really sorry."

Seeing her like this, Wei Yumeng assumed she was just nervous due to unfamiliarity with the procedure. Since it wasn't a major issue, and she wasn't in the mood to fuss, she tugged on Zhan Mohan's hand. "Forget it, let her finish."

Zhan Mohan didn't want someone so inexperienced to administer the IV, but since she didn't mind, he didn't want to upset her over a minor matter and stopped interfering.

The young nurse quickly proceeded with adding the last medication to the infusion. However, this time, her hands shook even more violently. Even Wei Yumeng found it strange. It was a simple addition of medication, something even a layperson could do, let alone a nurse.

She and Zhan Mohan exchanged a glance, both seeing the suspicion in each other's eyes. This nurse was overly nervous.

Especially when Zhan Mohan suddenly grabbed her wrist, she let out a startled cry.

"What medicine is that in your hand?"

The young nurse whispered, "It's just nutrient fluid, good for pregnant women."

As she was about to push the plunger, Zhan Mohan knocked the syringe out of her hand and grabbed her arms. "Who are you?"

At the same time, the ward door was suddenly flung open, and a figure in a white coat stumbled in. Without a word, she directly pulled the needle out of Wei Yumeng's hand. Blood spurted from her vein, and the person then collapsed by the bedside.

The series of sudden events caught both of them off guard. Zhan Mohan released the nurse and grabbed a cotton ball from the medical cart to press against the puncture site on Wei Yumeng's arm.

The first reaction of the young nurse upon being released was to flee.

However, the person who had collapsed then grabbed her by the hem of her clothes. During the struggle, Wei Yumeng got a clear look at her—it was the head doctor who had examined her earlier.

Seeing this, Zhan Mohan's expression darkened. He took out his phone and called Fang Xun. Within ten minutes, the people in the ward were surrounded by bodyguards.

The director had also recovered somewhat. Wei Yumeng indicated for Fang Xun to help her sit down.

Zhan Mohan put his arm around Wei Yumeng's shoulders, patting her gently. "What exactly is going on? I'm giving you a chance to tell the truth now."

The director rubbed her temples, still looking dazed. "While I was seeing patients today, I was suddenly knocked unconscious with ether. When I woke up, I found Miss Wei's prenatal check-up report in the trash can. I knew something had gone wrong."

"I found Miss Wei's admission information in the inpatient department and saw that lab result. Miss Wei, have you offended anyone? If all these drugs were injected into your body, they could cause the death of your fetus."

She said this, retrieving the empty vial of the drug the nurse was about to add from the trash can. She directly questioned, "You've studied under me for so long, you know the consequences of using these drugs. Tell me, why are you trying to harm her?"

The young nurse, held by two bodyguards, trembled even more violently upon hearing the accusation.

"I took the wrong medicine, Director. I didn't intend to harm Miss Wei's child."

Hearing her continued denial, the director was furious and threw the vial at her feet. "You were the one who knocked me out in the examination room, weren't you? Why did you do this?"

Although there were no cameras in the examination room to protect patient privacy, only this nurse could have managed it so easily.

Thus, the director pressed her repeatedly, as this involved not only professional ethics but also a patient-doctor dispute. If the patient were to cause trouble, the hospital would bear full responsibility, and she, as the director, might even lose her job.

Hearing the director's words, Zhan Mohan could roughly piece together the sequence of events. He had no patience for a back-and-forth with this nurse. He beckoned Fang Xun. "Fang Xun, if she doesn't tell the truth, call the police. If we can't get the truth out of her, let her spend a few days in jail until she's willing to speak."

This nurse was clearly acting under someone's instructions. Attempted murder was punishable, but the mastermind behind it couldn't be let off.

Upon hearing this, the young nurse's psychological defenses completely collapsed. She was already terrified, and her only motivation for taking such a risk was money. But if the police were involved, she wouldn't be able to spend even a lot of money, a fact she understood clearly.

So, as the bodyguards were about to drag her out, she fell to her knees with a thud, tears streaming down her face.

"Director, someone instructed me to do this. She only said that if I injected the medicine into Miss Wei's nutrient fluid, she would give me five hundred thousand. I was temporarily blinded by greed."

Five hundred thousand yuan was an astronomical sum for a nurse. To receive such a reward for merely injecting a single dose, many would be unable to resist the temptation. Professional ethics and human morality were insignificant in the face of monetary temptation.

Wei Yumeng couldn't help but feel a chill of fear. So, even when she was outside the examination room, someone was already plotting against her child.

As a mother, her child was almost harmed under unknown circumstances. She was consumed by rage, her fists clenched so tightly that her knuckles turned white from the exertion.

"Who, who gave you the money?"

Squeezing this question out through gritted teeth was her limit. Her chest heaved violently, and her stomach began to ache.

Sensing her discomfort, Zhan Mohan immediately picked her up. "You, come and examine her."

Fang Xun helped the director hurry to the examination room. By the time Wei Yumeng was placed on the examination table, her face was deathly pale, and her clothes were soaked with sweat.

Seeing the situation, the director put aside all other concerns and quickly called for other senior obstetricians and gynecologists.

After all, with Zhan Mohan's current demeanor, it was as if the hospital would cease to exist if anything happened to Wei Yumeng.

"The patient is experiencing uterine contractions due to extreme agitation and excessive liver fire in the mother. We can only try to alleviate it. If the situation becomes uncontrollable, we will have to perform a C-section."

In the examination room, the doctors were in a frenzy. The director explained the situation to Zhan Mohan concisely, leaving the choice to him.

Zhan Mohan held Wei Yumeng's hands tightly, large beads of sweat dripping from his forehead onto Wei Yumeng's ear.

"I don't care what method you use, the adult cannot be harmed!"
