Everything happened too quickly for Wei Yumeng to react.
By the time she did, Chen Yutong had already fallen down the stairs, and a large patch of blood on the ground was a stark, painful sight.
"Yutong! Yutong!" Wei Yumeng panicked, but no matter how much she called out, Chen Yutong remained unresponsive.
Her hands trembling, she dialed emergency services.
At the hospital, Wei Yumeng replayed the events in her mind. She was consumed by distress, though Chen Yutong's aggressive attack on her was not something she had wished for, nor was Chen Yutong's current state.
Fearing the consequences, Wei Yumeng did not inform Zhan Yangyi about the incident. Instead, she contacted Zhan Mohan, who soon arrived at the hospital.
"Mohan!" Wei Yumeng rushed forward and hugged Zhan Mohan tightly. "I... I didn't mean for it to happen. The situation was..."
Zhan Mohan naturally believed Wei Yumeng and gently comforted her, "Calm down, it's alright. Everything will be alright."
After a while in Zhan Mohan's embrace, Wei Yumeng gradually calmed down and recounted everything that had happened.
Zhan Mohan frowned. The situation seemed too peculiar to him. Moreover, according to Wei Yumeng, Chen Yutong had intended to attack her first, and she had fallen herself while trying to evade.
Given Chen Yutong's meticulous nature, Zhan Mohan found it hard to believe she would have attacked Wei Yumeng within the Zhan family's residence.
However, Wei Yumeng had no reason to deceive Zhan Mohan, leaving only one plausible explanation.
That Chen Yutong's attack on Wei Yumeng was intentional. Wei Yumeng would naturally evade, and Chen Yutong would then fall down the stairs as planned.
Wei Yumeng also considered this possibility but found it hard to believe that a woman would go to such lengths to achieve her goals.
Just then, a doctor emerged from the ward.
"Who is Ms. Chen Yutong's family member?"
Wei Yumeng stepped forward. "I am. How is she now?"
"She is very weak, with varying degrees of injuries from the fall. There are also signs of miscarriage. We've examined her, and the baby is gone."
Hearing this, Wei Yumeng remembered the bright red blood on the ground at the time.
"Mohan, could it be that we..." Wei Yumeng hesitated, unable to finish her thought.
If they had indeed made a mistake, wouldn't they be responsible for the loss of a little life?
The thought sent a wave of dizziness through her, and she stumbled back a few steps.
Zhan Mohan immediately steadied her. Although the doctor had presented this conclusion, Zhan Mohan didn't fully accept it.
He trusted his own ongoing investigation more than what others claimed. However, a more pressing issue now was how to explain this to Zhan Yangyi.
Zhan Yangyi learned of the incident after finishing work and rushed to the hospital. Chen Yutong had just woken up and, upon seeing him, clung to him and wept uncontrollably.
"Yangyi... I... I couldn't protect our child."
Zhan Yangyi held her, his heart aching, and gently stroked her back.
Though he was also distressed, Zhan Yangyi knew he had to prioritize Chen Yutong's feelings.
"It's alright, we can have more children. The most important thing is that you're safe," Zhan Yangyi said earnestly, looking at Chen Yutong. "What exactly happened? How did you fall down the stairs?"
Wei Yumeng, standing nearby, trembled at the question. Zhan Mohan tightly gripped her hand.
Chen Yutong, seeing them protect each other even in this situation, felt a surge of jealousy.
"Yangyi, it was actually my own carelessness," Chen Yutong said softly, her gaze, however, piercing through Zhan Yangyi and fixed on Zhan Mohan and Wei Yumeng.
Zhan Yangyi clearly didn't believe her. "You're not the careless type. Tell me what really happened. I will make sure justice is served."
"Actually..."
Just as Chen Yutong was about to speak, she caught a warning glance from Zhan Mohan, a clear signal not to involve Wei Yumeng.
Chen Yutong feigned shock and said, "No, it really was my carelessness. I had intended to go down for a walk, but I slipped on the stairs and fell."
Zhan Yangyi couldn't help but notice Chen Yutong's hesitation and her sudden change of subject. She had clearly intended to say something else.
He instinctively turned his gaze to where Chen Yutong had been looking, directly at Zhan Mohan and Wei Yumeng.
Wei Yumeng appeared shaken and distressed.
Zhan Yangyi said nothing more, offering Chen Yutong a few more words of comfort. After ensuring she was resting, he left with Zhan Mohan and Wei Yumeng.
The journey back was silent, filled with an awkward tension. However, as soon as they returned to the old Zhan family mansion, Zhan Yangyi's demeanor hardened.
"Tell me, what really happened? Yutong didn't fall down the stairs accidentally, did she?"
As Wei Yumeng was about to speak, Zhan Mohan shielded her.
"Brother, I know this must be a blow to you, but this is indeed what happened. By the time we arrived, we only saw her on the ground and immediately took her to the hospital."
Zhan Yangyi stared at Zhan Mohan, his disbelief evident. "Are you telling the truth?"
"Yes, the truth," Zhan Mohan nodded solemnly.
Zhan Yangyi asked no further questions. He cast a glance at them before turning and angrily retreating to his room.
Wei Yumeng knew Zhan Mohan had said that to protect her, but she genuinely felt a pang of guilt.
"Mohan, perhaps we should..."
Wei Yumeng's words were cut short by Zhan Mohan. "You know this situation is more complicated than it appears. If we tell Big Brother about it now, it will only make things worse. We need to buy time to figure this out."
"But... I don't understand. If her pregnancy was fake, where did all that blood come from? I... I saw it with my own eyes." The memory of the scene sent a shiver of fear through Wei Yumeng.
Zhan Mohan pulled Wei Yumeng into his embrace once more. "Don't be afraid. I will get to the bottom of this and give you an explanation. Just give me a little more time, alright?"
Wei Yumeng finally nodded.
At the hospital, Chen Yutong had long since shed her weak pretense. All of it had been an act. As for the blood, it was merely a small trick.
Having been an actress before, acquiring props was not difficult for her. While she had successfully navigated the issue of pregnancy, she knew the matter was far from over.
