While Zhan Mohan had been investigating the doctor, it was evident that someone had anticipated this. Fang Xun had searched for days but couldn't locate Dr. Wang. However, he wouldn't give up. As long as the doctor was still alive, he would be found.
During Chen Yutong's hospital stay, Wei Yumeng visited her frequently, though their relationship had clearly cooled. Wei Yumeng's visits stemmed from lingering guilt over past events. Initially, she had believed Zhan Mohan's investigation and that Chen Yutong's child was fake. But after what happened, her own doubts resurfaced. After all, they hadn't found any direct proof of Chen Yutong's situation. A re-examination of the child might have helped, but the child was now reported as lost.
"It's alright, Yumeng. You don't always need to come to the hospital to see me," Chen Yutong said to Wei Yumeng. "I don't blame you for what happened before. You didn't do it on purpose, and I haven't told Yang Yi, so just pretend it never happened."
While these words seemed to be for Wei Yumeng's benefit, Wei Yumeng didn't perceive them that way. No one knew better than she did what had transpired that day. Though she couldn't definitively prove whether anything had happened between Chen Yutong and Zhan Yang Yi, she was certain of Chen Yutong's intentions that day.
Wei Yumeng looked at Chen Yutong, her tone calm. "Don't say that. I am truly sorry for what happened that day, but that doesn't mean I don't have other thoughts about it."
At that moment, Chen Yutong, from her angle, saw a silhouette reflected in the window. It was a shadow she knew all too well. She had wanted to tell Zhan Yang Yi directly that Wei Yumeng had pushed her, but Zhan Mohan was present then, so she hadn't spoken. Now, this was the perfect opportunity.
She deliberately spoke loudly to Wei Yumeng, "So, you have other thoughts about you pushing me down the stairs?"
From Wei Yumeng's perspective, she hadn't yet seen the figure outside the window.
"I think you should know very well that you made the first move that day. If you hadn't attacked first, I wouldn't have dodged, and you wouldn't be in this state," Wei Yumeng said calmly, though a hint of anger was creeping into her voice. She hadn't intended to confront Chen Yutong about this, but Chen Yutong had brought it up herself.
Chen Yutong, however, looked wronged. "Yumeng, that's not right. I was pregnant at the time. How could I do something so dangerous to you? You know how important this child is to me."
"Is that so?" Wei Yumeng was skeptical. Just as she was about to say more, the door was pushed open, and someone walked in.
"Is what she just said true?" Zhan Yang Yi's voice was filled with anger. "So, you caused the death of our child?"
Wei Yumeng froze. She glanced at Chen Yutong, then at Zhan Yang Yi. She suddenly understood why Chen Yutong had initiated this topic.
"Brother, it's not what you think. Please let me explain."
But what explanation could Zhan Yang Yi possibly listen to now?
"Explain? What explanation do you want me to listen to? The facts are right here. My child is gone, and Yutong is like this. What more explanation do you need?" Zhan Yang Yi walked over to Chen Yutong, shielding her. "Now, get out of here. I don't want to see you again!"
Wei Yumeng looked at Zhan Yang Yi, feeling a sense of injustice, yet she was powerless to prove her innocence. Zhan Yang Yi, unlike Zhan Mohan, wouldn't unconditionally believe her, especially when his beloved was injured. Wei Yumeng left the ward without looking back.
Watching Wei Yumeng's retreating back, Zhan Yang Yi felt a pang of pain. Why did it have to be Wei Yumeng who caused the death of their child? And why did such a thing have to happen?
Zhan Yang Yi gently held Chen Yutong in his arms. "Don't worry. Since I now know who is responsible for all this, I will definitely get you justice."
But Chen Yutong softly hugged him, saying, "Yang Yi, perhaps we should just let this matter go."
Zhan Yang Yi was surprised by her words. He couldn't fathom letting it go when a life was lost. Chen Yutong, however, was thinking of another aspect. She had resorted to this tactic because Wei Yumeng had insisted on a re-examination. The previous doctors were all arranged by her and presented no problem. But if the hospital was chosen by Wei Yumeng, the outcome would be entirely different. Therefore, as long as she could resolve this issue before proving the authenticity of her pregnancy, she could escape her predicament. Framing Wei Yumeng was an incidental consequence, though she knew it could also put her in a disadvantageous position.
"Yutong, I know you are a kind person, but I cannot simply let this matter go. However, rest assured, I know what you're worried about. Before I figure everything out, I won't be impulsive like before. Only when I have concrete evidence will I confront them directly." Zhan Yang Yi clenched his fist, suspecting that Zhan Mohan might also be involved in this.
"But Yang Yi, this happened at the old Zhan family manor. We... even if we investigate, we might not find anything. Besides, I was also at fault. I..." Chen Yutong lowered her head, on the verge of tears.
But Zhan Yang Yi looked at her with sincere eyes. "Alright, leave this to me. Just trust me, okay?" Chen Yutong nodded and slowly nestled into his embrace.
Two days later, with the doctor's permission, Chen Yutong returned to the old Zhan family manor to recuperate. When Old Master Zhan saw her condition, he was heartbroken. "I only went out for a trip, and this is what happened? You adults were here, how could you not even look after a pregnant woman?"
Chen Yutong said apologetically, "Grandpa, it was my carelessness."
Old Master Zhan patted Chen Yutong's hand. "It's my fault. I should have stayed home to look after you." Zhan Yang Yi, standing nearby, had a grim expression and remained silent.
Wei Yumeng and Zhan Mohan exchanged a look. Finally, Wei Yumeng spoke, "Grandpa, we actually wanted to talk to you about something. We plan to move back tomorrow." This news startled Chen Yutong. If Zhan Mohan left, what would be the point of her staying here?
