Song Lijun and Feng Zhenhua lost sleep over Catherine’s matter, finding it hard to accept that their own child could turn so vicious and cruel.
Meanwhile, in another room, Catherine also tossed and turned all night. She couldn't rest easy without eliminating Wei Anguo, the lingering threat.
Early in the morning, Catherine, fully dressed, stepped out and hailed a taxi.
"Go to a..."
The shadow pulled a white medicine bottle and a syringe from its chest pocket and, in front of Wei Anguo, poured the contents in.
A wave of intense pain washed over Wei Anguo, waking him. The moment he opened his eyes, he saw a figure in black holding a thumb-thick tube and plunging it into his arm.
"You, you..." He struggled to sit up, but as soon as two words escaped his throat, he fell silent, as if his mouth were stuck with gum.
The black figure let out a cold sneer at his struggle.
Having injected the entire syringe, the man quickly withdrew it, tucked Wei Anguo’s arm back under the blanket, and left in haste. The entire process took less than a minute.
Not long after the man departed, the instruments in the ward began emitting piercing beeps. A minute later, medical personnel rushed in, and Wei Anguo was wheeled into the emergency room.
A nurse shouted, "Quick, notify the family!"
Wei Yumeng was woken by her phone. Groggily, she slid to answer, her eyes still closed.
"Hello." After listening for a moment, her sleepiness vanished instantly. She threw off the covers and sat up in bed.
"How is he now?" she asked quickly.
Unsure of what the other party said, Wei Yumeng’s brows furrowed. She got out of bed and started walking out, saying, "Okay, I'm on my way."
After tidying herself up, Wei Yumeng called Zhan Mohan.
"What is it?" His gentle voice greeted her the moment the call connected, instantly calming her heart.
"Mohan, the hospital called to say Wei Anguo had an accident. I'm going to the hospital now."
"Don't worry, I'll have Fang Xun pick you up."
"No need, I'll take a taxi myself." Wei Yumeng shook her head, deciding a taxi would be faster.
"Alright, I'll be there too." Zhan Mohan said softly.
Wei Yumeng arrived at the hospital as quickly as possible. By then, Wei Anguo had already come out of surgery.
"How is he?" Wei Yumeng asked the doctor waiting by the side.
Wei Anguo was now covered in tubes, a rather shocking sight.
"Mrs. Zhan, it's like this," the doctor said with a solemn expression. "Your father's condition suddenly worsened this morning. We rushed to perform emergency treatment immediately, but regrettably, we were unable to save him in time."
"Your father is now in a semi-vegetative state."
"What does semi-vegetative state mean?" Wei Yumeng asked, not fully understanding.
"It means your father may never be able to speak again," the doctor explained in layman's terms.
"Wasn't he fine yesterday?"
The events had happened too suddenly, and Wei Yumeng was struggling to process it.
"Mrs. Zhan, we... we are truly sorry..." the doctor said helplessly, clearly not wanting to witness such a scene.
"Is there no solution?"
"Mrs. Zhan, we did our best."
At that moment, Zhan Mohan also arrived. He asked Wei Yumeng about Wei Anguo's condition, and she explained it to him.
After listening, Zhan Mohan looked at Wei Anguo on the hospital bed, his expression growing serious. He felt that this was no simple sudden turn of events, but without any evidence, he couldn't speak rashly.
Zhan Mohan said to the doctor, "Please do your best."
A semi-vegetative state was difficult to treat, and coupled with Wei Anguo’s already poor health, they could only try their best.
Wei Yumeng stood by Wei Anguo's bedside, looking at the man's weathered face, his cheeks sunken from pain and illness. An indescribable heaviness filled her heart.
Even though this man had treated her poorly, he was, after all, her father.
"Don't worry," Zhan Mohan said, coming over and putting his arm around her. "Someone must have orchestrated this. I'll have Fang Xun investigate."
"Mhmm."
Wei Yumeng nodded, feeling quite exhausted. So much had happened recently.
"Do you want to go back and rest for a while?" Zhan Mohan asked, noticing her pale complexion and weary state.
"No, I'll just sit here for a bit." Wei Yumeng shook her head. "You should go to the company. I'll be fine here."
"I've already asked Fang Xun to manage the company. I'll stay here with you." Zhan Mohan smiled gently.
Wei Yumeng couldn't help but smile back. Zhan Mohan was always so gentle, always able to put her at ease in an instant. Being by his side, Wei Yumeng felt as though she never had to worry.
Even if the sky were to fall, Zhan Mohan would stand by her and bear it for her. It had always been like this, year after year.
She was grateful to heaven for bestowing upon her such a wonderful man. Even though her childhood was unfortunate and she had suffered unfair treatment from Wei Anguo, she always believed that the world ultimately turned towards the sun.
She glanced at Wei Anguo, still lying unconscious on the bed, and sighed.
"His current state is perhaps heaven's punishment for him. Let the doctors do their best. He did raise me, after all."
