A familiar voice reached Wei Yumeng's ears word for word. Her eyes widened. She hadn't seen this person in a very long time.
They actually dared to come looking for her?
Wei Yumeng coldly curled her lips. She sat up again, leaning against the soft bolster behind her, and quietly listened to the commotion outside the door.
"No! What is your name? I need to make a call to inform Young Master Zhan. Only after his permission can you see Madam Zhan."
The nurse steadfastly upheld her principles, unwilling to let a stranger in so casually. What if she intended to harm the Madam? That would be disastrous!
"I only have a few words to say, why do I need to tell Young Master Zhan?" Hearing Zhan Mohan's name, the woman outside seemed to falter. She spoke meekly, "I have something important to say. What would a little nurse like you understand?"
Seeing that the woman seemed to be backing down, the nurse became even more resolute in guarding the ward door. She lifted her head and snorted heavily.
"Then I'll call Young Master Zhan's assistant right now. Madam tells Young Master Zhan everything important anyway. Why don't you tell Young Master Zhan yourself what this important matter is!"
As soon as the nurse finished speaking, she took out her phone from her pocket and pressed the dial button with a practiced motion.
The woman wanted to say something else, but seeing that the nurse was serious, she panicked. With a "snap," she slapped the phone out of the nurse's hand.
The phone clattered to the ground, its screen covered in a spiderweb of cracks. The nurse cried out in dismay. The woman hurriedly stepped on the phone and forcefully pushed open the ward door.
The door creaked open, and two shadows fell clearly on the ward floor.
The woman's heart leaped with joy. She rushed to go inside, her bulky body squeezing past the nurse.
"You can't! I already told you not to disturb her, Madam is resting!"
The nurse hissed at the woman in a low voice, grabbing her clothes with one hand to pull her back, while still holding her phone with the other.
"It's you."
A clear, cool voice, like a stream, gently echoed in the room.
The sudden voice startled both of them, and they turned their heads towards the person on the hospital bed in unison.
Wei Yumeng leaned against the headboard, her beautiful eyes like autumn water, shining exceptionally brightly in the dim light.
Moonlight slanted through the partially drawn curtains, bathing Wei Yumeng in silver light, making her expressionless little face even colder.
Yin Fang hadn't expected Wei Yumeng to be awake. Seeing the displeasure on her face, she stood frozen, not daring to move.
The nurse, who had never seen Wei Yumeng like this before, was so scared she quickly stood at attention and reprimanded Yin Fang with a wronged expression.
"I told you not to come in, not to come in! See? Now you've woken Madam up. How will you take responsibility?"
"You're just a little nurse, why so much nonsense? If you had let me in earlier, wouldn't this have been avoided?"
Yin Fang was annoyed by the nurse's scolding and couldn't act out under Wei Yumeng's gaze. She glared at the nurse resentfully.
This old witch made a mistake but wouldn't admit it and had the audacity to scold her. The nurse gritted her teeth and complained to Wei Yumeng.
"Madam, I was guarding the door perfectly fine. This old witch insisted on barging in, and look, she even stepped on my phone screen!"
The nurse handed the cracked phone to Wei Yumeng. Yin Fang was a bit anxious. She hadn't come here to argue with this nurse, nor did she want to offend Wei Yumeng!
Wei Yumeng looked at the nurse, who seemed to have suffered a great injustice. She examined the phone with mock seriousness and indeed, the screen was beyond recognition. Yin Fang was still so overbearing and unreasonable.
"It wasn't on purpose. This phone looks cheap anyway. Don't think you can use it to swindle me." Yin Fang retorted weakly, her eyes darting towards Wei Yumeng.
Wei Yumeng folded her hands on the white quilt and calmly watched the argument unfold. She hadn't seen anything so interesting since she woke up.
The nurse had never encountered someone so full of nonsense. She stomped her foot in anger, her eyes welling up with tears. She was clearly very upset.
If these two continued to bicker, the entire hospital would gather to watch the spectacle.
Wei Yumeng cupped her fist against her lips and cleared her throat. Her soft cough drew both their gazes to her.
"Go pick out a new phone tomorrow. Pick the most expensive one and put it on my account. I'll have Young Master Zhan's assistant reimburse you."
"Thank you, Madam! I will definitely guard the door well from now on and won't let certain old witches disturb you!"
Upon hearing that Wei Yumeng was siding with her and even buying her a new phone, the nurse was overjoyed. She glanced triumphantly at Yin Fang.
Yin Fang felt as if Wei Yumeng's actions were slapping her in the face. Her face darkened considerably, but she didn't dare to say anything.
"Alright, you can go close the door. I have something to discuss with her."
Wei Yumeng noticed that something was off with Yin Fang. She said to the nurse in a gentle tone.
"Yes, Madam." The nurse had wanted to kick Yin Fang out, but she hadn't expected Wei Yumeng to agree. She could only comply, casting a threatening glance at Yin Fang as she left, as if issuing a warning.
The door creaked shut again, leaving only Wei Yumeng and Yin Fang confronting each other. Yin Fang nervously rubbed her hands together, looking bewildered.
"Speak. You still have the nerve to show up. What do you want?"
Wei Yumeng's cold voice suddenly cut through the air. She observed Yin Fang with a discerning eye.
After so long, her so-called stepmother had become much darker. Her skin was chapped, her figure was bloated, and she had more wrinkles. She looked completely different from her past self.
Yin Fang shivered, knowing that Wei Yumeng still held a grudge against her. She suddenly fell to her knees with a "plop."
"Yumeng, everything in the past was my fault. I was blinded by greed. I don't expect your forgiveness. An Guo and I have already been punished. We are living a very difficult life in Africa."
Wei Yumeng raised an eyebrow but remained silent, waiting for Yin Fang to continue. She knew that these opening words were merely a prelude to what was to come.
Yin Fang also noticed Wei Yumeng's indifferent demeanor. She steeled herself and forced out two lines of tears.
"We were accustomed to being served. We don't know how to do anything in Africa. We never know where our next meal is coming from, and we are often bullied. Our lives are more bitter than yellow gentian!"
"So, you want us to let you go and return to live in China?" Wei Yumeng knew full well that Yin Fang's true intentions lay elsewhere, but since the other party was not stating it directly, she could only prompt her. "If you can't stand it, you can, this is a small matter..."
"No, no, no! I'm not here to beg for something like that. Sending me and An Guo to suffer in Africa is the punishment we deserve! I, I wanted to say..."
Yin Fang was greatly alarmed. She quickly shook her head and frantically denied it.
