As the first explosion sounded, Danny had already jumped out of bed.
Immediately afterward, a storm of strikes came from above, accompanied by a continuous rain of dirt and debris, as if the entire residence was about to collapse.
“W-What’s happening?”
“Is it an earthquake?”
His comrades also woke up from their dreams, and the pitch-black room was immediately filled with chaos.
“No, we’re under attack!” The warrior closest to the door grabbed his rifle and reached for the door, but Danny pinned him to the ground. “What are you doing?”
“Don’t move, the attack isn’t over!” Danny roared.
Sure enough, several more explosions came from far and near, followed by another series of dull thuds like rainfall.
“Cough cough, damn it, that’s…”
Dust billowed, and someone lit a candle. When the faint candlelight dispelled the darkness, everyone couldn't help but gasp.
Many sharp black needles had appeared on the raised roof, looking like a field of inverted bristles in the flickering light.
“Spider demons…” The person pinned down by Danny swallowed, most members of the marksman team had participated in the first expedition, and were no strangers to this type of enemy. He obviously also thought about what the outcome would have been if he had rashly rushed out of the residence and encountered the needle screen.
“If I can go back alive, I will buy two lamb legs and thank Lian xiaojie in person,” another person said, patting his chest.
According to usual combat habits, temporary camps were generally tents, but this time they were changed to mud kilns built by witches—although it was unknown whether this was a consideration, there was no doubt that this measure played a key role. If they were still cloth tents, they would probably already be riddled with holes.
“Don’t say such unlucky things, I’m still waiting to go back and get married.”
“You guy, just want to get close to Lian xiaojie on purpose, right!”
“What nonsense, if I’m going to get close to someone, it should be Nana Wawa, the little angel.”
Although they had just been a hair's breadth away from death, no one was affected by the sudden attack. Even while their mouths were running non-stop, their weapons and ammunition were already strapped to their bodies.
Obviously, these people all understood a principle.
Death cannot be avoided; it is either about to arrive, or it has not yet come. Since they can still think about the problem, it proves that it is not yet time to die. Instead of worrying and being afraid, it’s better to do something first—like taking down the enemy.
When the camp gradually boiled over, Danny pushed open the door and scurried out of the kiln.
There were several sentries at the entrance of the barracks who had been pierced and were no longer breathing. At this moment, there were sounds almost everywhere—people shouting, gunfire, explosions, and the roars of demons. No one knew where the enemies were, or how many there were. The watchtowers, which were originally used to indicate direction, were not lit, as if the enemies had appeared in the camp in the blink of an eye.
He went straight to the roof, and after observing for a while, he ran to the place where the gunfire was sparsest, completely ignoring the shouts of his teammates behind him.
“I thought you would go to the place with the most people.”
Malt’s voice chuckled softly in his ear.
This was why he loved fighting.
Only in the smoke of gunpowder would his partner appear by his side again.
“That means we have the advantage. Me adding to it is just icing on the cake,” Danny replied. “But intermittent gunfire means someone is in a bitter fight, and my bullets can bring salvation.”
“I told you, it’s not your fault—you can’t save everyone on the battlefield.”
“But I can at least save everyone I see,” he smiled. “Don’t worry, I think this is great, it allows me to see you more clearly.”
Danny turned his head, and sure enough, that familiar face emerged from the darkness, following him as he ran.
After approaching the battle location, he found a high point—a dozen or so iron boxes stacked together, and climbed up. As his vision suddenly opened up, he noticed that this was close to the fortress artillery position, and several demons were using cover and fighting with the artillerymen who had arrived. Obviously, the artillerymen, lacking heavy weapons, were at a disadvantage, unable to suppress the enemy or seize the position from the enemy's javelins.
From the barracks to the artillery, several people were pierced by bone spears and fell into pools of blood.
“How did they get here?”
“I don’t know, but their good days are about to end,” Danny raised his rifle, aiming at a demon that was quietly flanking the barracks from the side. If it succeeded, it would probably cause a bloody storm in an instant. The latter was completely unaware that someone had aimed a gun at it, its entire body completely exposed in the scope.
He pulled the trigger without hesitation, and a cloud of red mist burst from the back of its head, and it fell from the roof.
Even with only moonlight to illuminate him, he would never miss at a distance of one hundred meters.
“Well done. Watch out on the left, someone is about to move.”
Five or six soldiers were crouching in the corner, moving little by little towards the edge, looking like they were going to try their best to enter the position, braving the enemy's javelins.
“Commendable courage, but zero technique. Without covering fire, you can’t outrun javelins,” Danny slightly raised the corner of his mouth. “So, how about waiting a little longer?”
He quickly fired three shots, hitting the ground next to them—the sudden splashes of dust and the whistling of bullets startled the soldiers, and they retracted the steps they had just taken.
“They’ll curse you to death for this,” Malt said worriedly.
“Hahahaha,” Danny finally laughed loudly. “Then they’ll have to live to curse.” He cheerfully turned his gun, picking off the berserk demons who dared to show their heads one by one. The enemies, who had been about to attack the camp, were completely suppressed for a time and dared not show themselves easily.
At this moment, the sound of rushing air came from the sky again.
“Be careful, look there!”
With Malt’s reminder, several black shadows fell from the sky, plunging straight into the position.
“Bang! Bang! Bang!”
The impact was so great that even the ground trembled slightly.
By the moonlight, Danny was surprised to find that they were several huge black stone pillars! After landing, red mist sprayed out from the pillars, accompanied by a hissing sound like a leaking machine, somewhat like His Majesty’s steam engine.
But he soon realized it wasn't a machine.
Three stone slabs peeled off from the thick pillar, bringing out a large pool of "blood"—the inside of the pillar was divided into three parts, and each part was filled with a demon! They were wrapped in living sacs, like babies immersed in the womb. As the scarlet liquid drained, they also woke up, revealing their hideous fangs.
But before the enemy could get out of the black stone pillar, a bullet accurately pierced the head of one of the berserk demons.
“Poof!”
The attacker swayed twice and slumped softly in the stone pillar.
“So this is why you suddenly appeared here?” Danny snorted softly and cleanly pushed in the next bullet. “Since you haven’t woken up yet, then you can continue to sleep. No matter how many come, I will send you all on your way one by one—watch me closely, Malt!”
