Half a Brick
Chapter 4 A Fine Funeral for a Dog
The next day, Mengzi and I delivered the paper effigies to the Wang family. Mengzi got me a bodyguard's outfit, and I stood guard next to Young Master Fen's mourning hall. Many beautiful women came to offer condolences, their eyes swollen from crying more than Tao'er's. Every one of them was a master of acting.
I guess those beauties thought Wang Yongnian and the dog had a real connection, so they did their best to fawn over the dead dog. Little did they know, the dog was just a tool for the wealthy Wang. If it wasn't to steal longevity for himself, how could he possibly have liked a dog?
Bai Tingting was the smart one. While the other beauties were crying over the dog, she was already dancing for Old Wang in a bikini. With her enchanting and flirtatious moves, Wang Yongnian quickly forgot about the dog.
By the third day, when the dog was sent up the mountain, all the beauties were sitting in bodyguard cars, following far behind. Bai Tingting, however, was able to recline elegantly next to Wang Yongnian, the two of them chatting and laughing, showing no signs of sadness.
The Wang family had chosen a village's cemetery as the burial site for the dog. Naturally, the villagers didn't want a dog buried with their ancestors, so they blocked the road with hoes and shovels. But they were just villagers; how could they stop the wealthy Wang's motorcade? A group of bodyguards went down, and the villagers could only flee in disarray. Those who were too slow were caught and given a beating.
Wang Yongnian was afraid that there would be some mistake in the dog's burial ceremony, so he oversaw the entire process himself. Even Bai Tingting was left out in the cold. The ones digging the pit and carrying the coffin were Wang Yongnian's most trusted bodyguards, and I had no way to get close.
Just when I thought there might be no opportunity, Bai Tingting, arm-in-arm with a curly-haired beauty, walked up to the opposite hillside, pointing into the distance for the curly-haired beauty to see.
The curly-haired beauty didn't see anything, and took two steps forward. Bai Tingting's face turned cold, and she stepped forward and stomped on the curly-haired beauty's dress, causing it to fall.
The curly-haired beauty wasn't wearing a bra, and when her dress fell, her entire figure was exposed to everyone's view. It was so alluring that even the dead dog in the coffin let out a dry, low growl.
The curly-haired beauty, of course, knew that Bai Tingting was doing it on purpose, just because she was prettier than Bai Tingting, and her figure was better. That's why Bai Tingting wanted to embarrass her in public.
How could the curly-haired beauty swallow this insult in silence? She retaliated by tearing off Bai Tingting's dress as well. Coincidentally, Bai Tingting wasn't wearing anything under her dress either, and she was completely naked in the desolate wilderness.
Then, the two women began to curse, tear at, and wrestle each other. They clawed and bit, trying to take each other down using the most primitive methods. The excitement of the battle made all the men present breathe heavily.
Bai Tingting's figure and appearance were indeed not as good as the curly-haired beauty's, and her original temperament wasn't as alluring either. But now, with the blessing of Miss Hu Ba, the wild, beast-like charm that she exuded made Wang Yongnian pant. Far from feeling that Bai Tingting's exposure in front of everyone was a disgrace, he was extremely proud to have such a woman.
Taking advantage of the fact that everyone's attention was on the two women, I approached the burial pit as quickly as possible, sprinkled a packet of talisman ash into it, and then quickly retreated to my original position.
When Bai Tingting saw that I had succeeded, she immediately ended her performance, threw herself into Wang Yongnian's arms, and cried loudly, complaining about being misunderstood and envied, and about the shame of being embarrassed in public. She even wanted to jump directly into the burial pit and have Wang Yongnian bury her with the dog.
Wang Yongnian was completely under her spell, calling her "my darling" and constantly comforting her, vowing that he would never look at the curly-haired beauty again, and would immediately tell her to get lost. He said that Bai Tingting was the only woman for him for the rest of his life, and that after the dog's funeral, he would go and get a marriage certificate with Bai Tingting, give her the title of Wang family's mistress, and the two of them would be together forever.
After Wang Yongnian's persistent comforting, Bai Tingting finally had a smile on her face, and even gave me a demonstrative look.
I have to say, Miss Hu Ba was really powerful. Even with such a clumsy script, she could successfully win a man's promise. Without her blessing, I'm afraid that the moment Bai Tingting's dress was torn off, Wang Yongnian would have no intention of touching her again.
Wang Yongnian held Bai Tingting in his arms, watching the bodyguards put Fen Gou's coffin into the burial pit, watching everyone fill the pit with shovelfuls of dirt. Finally, he left a few trusted men to guard the grave before finally being satisfied and letting Bai Tingting support him as they returned.
I had completed what I needed to do, and didn't return to the Wang family with them. I slipped out of the group midway and returned to the shop.
When I went upstairs to check, Ding Kan was gone. There was a bank card on the bedside table with the password written on the back. That kid was quite considerate.
I smiled, put the card in my wallet, and went back to the rocking chair downstairs to read. Other than chanting a mantra towards the cemetery every three hours, everything else was as usual.
The next few days passed peacefully. On the fourth day, a bounty video appeared online. Wang Yongnian, chairman of the Wang Group, was seriously ill and unconscious, and famous doctors from home and abroad were helpless. The mistress, Bai Tingting, offered a reward of ten million to seek an expert to prolong her husband's life.
Bai Tingting shed tears several times in the video, saying that she was a weak woman who didn't understand anything, and that she couldn't shoulder such a big family business and such a heavy burden. She begged Wang Yongnian to get better, saying that she didn't want anything, and would rather become a vegetarian and chant Buddhist scriptures, only asking that Wang Yongnian could get through this. Those who didn't know the truth would have thought she was really blind and truly in love with Wang Yongnian.
A drama queen is a drama queen. With Miss Ba's blessing, this woman was practically capable of bringing disaster to the country and the people.
The next day, a fire broke out in the cemetery. The fire wasn't big and was quickly extinguished. The only thing that was burned down was a new grave containing a dog. The villagers celebrated with great fanfare, saying that their ancestors had shown their power and driven out the evil dog.
At the same time, news of Wang Yongnian's death spread from the Wang family. Miss Hu Ba also returned to the spirit tablet, but not only did the tablet not receive nourishment, it showed signs of cracking, and a layer of resentment enveloped the tablet.
Bai Tingting had gone back on her word, which was why Miss Hu Ba was filled with resentment.
I quickly offered incense to Miss Hu Ba, asking her not to be angry for now, and assuring her that I would definitely get the debt that Bai Tingting owed her back.
After appeasing Miss Hu Ba, I took out the envelope and USB drive that Bai Tingting had left behind, and printed two photos of her from my WeChat Moments. I stuck one photo on the envelope and the other on the USB drive, and then tied the photo-covered envelope and USB drive to the table leg with a red string.
I frowned and pondered for a while, then went to the small supermarket on the east side and spent ten yuan to buy a small battery-powered fan. I stuck a straw rope on the fan blade, turned it on, and placed it next to the table leg.
Don't ask me why I didn't use the hair, nails, and birthdate in the box. None of those were Bai Tingting's. This woman had many tricks up her sleeve, and had prepared to go back on her word from the beginning. She probably hadn't even touched the hair and nails.
When I went to the small supermarket to buy the fan just now, the owner was watching TV. It seemed like a large ceremony of the Wang Group was being broadcast live, and Bai Tingting was sitting in a very prominent position.
I also searched on TV and found the channel. It was Bai Tingting's inauguration ceremony as the head of the Wang Group, and the name of the Wang Group had even been changed to the Bai Group.
Watching Bai Tingting's domineering attitude, I immediately pulled out the little paper figure from the table leg, re-tied it upside down, and tore the straw rope from the fan blade, stepped on it twice on the ground, dipped it in incense ash, and stuck it back on.
Then I turned the small fan on at full power, aiming it specifically at the middle of the legs.
