Without a second thought, Bai Ye seized the opportunity, darting out and leaping up. He stepped on the axe handle, then surged onto the ax-wielding assailant, shoving his pistol directly into the creature's mouth.
Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang…
The ax-wielder's head was far more resilient than that of a common zombie. Bai Ye continuously pulled the trigger until the magazine was empty. Only then did the assailant's head finally explode, its massive body toppling backward to the ground with a thud.
Bai Ye wiped his gun with his sleeve, then ejected the spent magazine and loaded a fresh one. He approached the dying man and looked down at his wound, noting that his intestines had spilled out.
"Anything you want to say?" Bai Ye asked.
"Send me off…" the man gasped, "Give me a quick end, please. Thank you."
Bai Ye nodded, aiming his pistol at the man's head. "Farewell, and don't stay too long."
Bang!
Bai Ye pulled the trigger, leaving a bloody hole in the man's head. His body slowly slumped.
Bai Ye felt a touch of melancholy, not at the man's death, but because when the ax-wielder appeared, the man had actually warned him to be careful.
Such a thing…
It was only possible when the World Battlefield had just opened. It brought back a sense of nostalgia for Bai Ye, for in the world ten years later, everyone's mind was consumed by a single objective: kill others, snatch God Stone fragments, and then survive to leave this damned place.
He holstered his gun, then took out a packet of nutrient paste, opening it and placing it in his mouth. Bai Ye continued his advance into Zone C.
The appearance of the ax-wielder wasn't necessarily a bad thing. For the Umbrella Corporation, although the ax-wielder was a failed product, it had still undergone mutation and was a highly valuable specimen for study.
In other words, before this base was destroyed by zombies due to the virus leak, the ax-wielder was likely held in the same area as the Tyrant, or at least in a similar vicinity.
"So…" Bai Ye murmured, "if the ax-wielder appeared in Zone C, then the area where the ax-wielder and the Tyrant were held might be near Zone C?"
As he thought, Bai Ye recalled the general layout of the underground base.
The outer areas were closest to the entrances and exits, followed by Zone A. Zone A was actually a facade; it didn't house virus research but operated as a legitimate biological company, intended as a failsafe to deceive anyone who discovered the base.
Zone B was for zombie sample experiments, essentially where viruses were injected to create zombies and their reactions observed. Zone C was for virus sample experimentation. Based on the original virus, Umbrella Corporation had actually developed various viruses, most of which were failed or half-finished products. The T-virus was the most complete and the closest to a perfect base virus.
Bai Ye mused, glancing at the directional signs. "Going this way is the living quarters, the second passage is the entertainment area, turning right leads to the dining area…"
Bai Ye tried his best to recall the structure of the Umbrella Corporation's underground base. More accurately, Bai Ye was recalling the areas he hadn't visited in his previous life. Those areas were more likely to contain the facilities where the Tyrant was held. Although the underground base was now destroyed and the Tyrant was certainly no longer contained, the probability of finding the Tyrant would be higher in the vicinity of its containment location.
Suddenly, a thought struck Bai Ye.
"Entertainment area?"
Since the underground base staff lived within the facility and couldn't leave freely, an entertainment area was necessary.
After all, even the donkeys in the production team needed a break. Working underground for extended periods without a place to release stress could lead to the researchers' emotional breakdown.
In his previous life, Bai Ye had never visited the entertainment area. Logically, that place would be filled with recreational facilities, unrelated to virus research. What could be found there?
However…
"As the saying goes, the most unlikely place is often the most likely?"
Bai Ye muttered to himself. Since he had no idea where to find the Tyrant, he might as well try his luck.
Bai Ye acted on his impulse and immediately changed direction, heading toward the entertainment area.
Upon entering the entertainment area, Bai Ye found it was indeed quite impressive.
Billiards, poker, arcade games, a gym, a private cinema, and indoor golf—it had everything. Most astonishingly, it was equipped with ecological environment projections. Despite being underground, there were windows that displayed views of towering skyscrapers.
Bai Ye remotely controlled the projection, and the surroundings transformed into a beach, complete with sand, palm trees, and bikini-clad beauties. Even the sound of the sea breeze was simulated.
Bai Ye remarked that the designer of this ecological environment projection clearly understood what men desired.
As he walked forward, thinking about this…
Bai Ye suddenly stopped, his gaze falling to the side.
There was a tear in the sea!
The fake was just fake. Everything around them was a projection, and when the projection screen was damaged, the projected image naturally showed a tear.
The reason Bai Ye felt something was amiss was…
There was wind!
Behind the screen should be a wall. Why was there wind?
Wind implied that there was space behind the screen, and air circulation would create wind.
Bai Ye walked towards the tear and forcefully pulled the damaged screen to the side. He then peered inside, and his eyes lit up. Indeed, there was space behind the screen.
Bai Ye stepped through the screen and slowly walked forward.
The space was dim. At the end, there was an old iron ladder. It creaked with every step. Descending the iron ladder, Bai Ye saw many neatly arranged glass jars.
These glass jars had iron bases. Inside, there was a viscous green liquid. Some jars had already shattered, and the liquid had spilled everywhere, thick and carrying a faint, fishy odor.
Besides that, there were many corpses!
Licker corpses!
There were about ten Licker corpses. Bai Ye approached and examined them. He could see numerous slash wounds on their bodies. Of course, the fatal blow was a puncture to the head.
It was clear that these Lickers had been killed by someone!
"So, this is where the Umbrella Corporation's base manufactured Lickers?" Bai Ye frowned. "It seems someone was here before me."
Rumble!
Just as Bai Ye was contemplating, a loud noise suddenly erupted from the ground beneath his feet, and the ground began to tremble continuously.
