Chapter 18 Survivor?

Bai Ye stepped over the shattered glass and slowly walked into the supermarket.

By the counter, a cash register had fallen to the ground, its drawer sprung open, with coins scattered around.

The countertop was a mess, with many items strewn about. Bai Ye casually picked up a lollipop, unwrapped it, and popped it into his mouth. It tasted fine, so it was likely still good.

Moving forward, Bai Ye reached a row of shelves and, after a brief glance, continued onward.

The shelves were stocked with milk, yogurt, and cultured milk products. These items had short shelf lives, so he knew most of them would be spoiled.

Bai Ye was looking for compressed biscuits and mineral water. Alcohol would do in a pinch, anything with a long shelf life.

Lost in thought, Bai Ye approached the next shelf, but before he could examine the contents, the shelf suddenly tilted and began to fall towards him.

Instinctively, Bai Ye raised his arms to brace the falling shelf. The items on it immediately scattered across the floor.

Then…

*Clang!*

Bai Ye felt something step onto the shelf, causing its weight to suddenly increase. He was forced to take half a step back.

Without hesitation, Bai Ye used one hand to prop up the shelf while raising his rifle with the other, pulling the trigger.

*Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop…*

As flames spewed from the barrel, bullets swept across the shelf. Immediately after, Bai Ye saw a figure leap from the shelf and sprint towards the side.

"Stop!"

Bai Ye growled, forcefully pushing the shelf aside and continuing to fire. But the figure was incredibly fast, darting through the shelves in the darkness, vanishing with a swift movement.

Bai Ye frowned, holding his rifle horizontally in front of him, and slowly paced forward. At that moment…

A figure emerged from behind the collapsed shelf, holding a climbing rope. He circled behind Bai Ye and suddenly attacked, wrapping the rope around Bai Ye's neck and yanking him backward with great force.

Caught off guard, Bai Ye was pulled to the ground. He looked up and saw a man behind him, his body covered in dirt, sporting a long beard and disheveled hair. His face was covered in thumb-sized tumors.

"Native?"

Natives referred to the people who lived in the world battlefield, not those chosen from various worlds. Some were friendly, some harbored malice, some could help, and some wanted to kill you. Occasionally, one could even receive quests from natives, and completing them successfully would yield benefits.

As for the current individual…

Bai Ye naturally classified him among those who wanted to kill him.

*Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop…*

The moment the man tightened the rope and dragged him, Bai Ye unhesitatingly turned his rifle towards him and pulled the trigger.

At such close range, aiming was almost unnecessary; he could hit the target with ease.

As bullets struck, bullet holes appeared all over the man's body, and blood began to flow.

However, after being hit seven or eight times, the man did not fall. Instead, he dropped the rope and turned to flee to the side.

Bai Ye drew his combat knife and cut the rope around his neck, wondering, "Zombie?"

Only zombies were impervious to bullets. But zombies couldn't possess such speed and agility. Furthermore, in the brief exchange of glances moments ago, Bai Ye had seen a look of gritted teeth on the man's face, and the pain of being riddled with bullets. Zombies, on the other hand, had far less varied expressions. To be precise, zombies had no expressions at all; they only growled or whimpered.

While Bai Ye was contemplating this, another row of shelves to the side collapsed like dominoes, crashing directly towards him.

Without a word, Bai Ye kicked out forcefully, shoving the shelf back. Immediately after, two figures darted out from behind the shelf.

"Ning Shuang, Sword Control!"

The Ning Shuang Sword, suspended beside Bai Ye, transformed into a silver streak and flew forward.

*Thwack!*

The Ning Shuang Sword caught up to one of the figures, piercing its body and pinning it to the wall.

Bai Ye moved forward rapidly, unloaded the empty magazine, loaded a fresh one, and pulled the trigger again.

Bullets continuously swept out, hitting the opponent's back. The person's body convulsed, blood dripped, and soon, all was silent.

The companion made no move to rescue him, instead smashing through the window and quickly escaping the supermarket, heading towards the adjacent restaurant.

Bai Ye wasn't in a hurry to pursue. He first approached the person pinned to the wall by the Ning Shuang Sword. Grasping the hair, he pulled the head back and felt for a breath.

Dead?

Zombies wouldn't die unless their heads were pierced!

Therefore, this individual wasn't immune to gunfire but possessed terrifying physical strength. He just couldn't be killed by a few shots?

Bai Ye's expression cleared as he understood their origin.

These individuals were survivors of the apocalyptic ruins, but they had mutated after being infected with the T-virus and hadn't died.

This was a low-probability event, but it was indeed possible, operating on the same principle as injecting T-virus and then injecting a vaccine to strengthen the body.

However, what was the reason these people used the broadcast to lure others here?

Bai Ye casually withdrew the Ning Shuang Sword from the body, then stepped over the shattered floor-to-ceiling window and walked towards the restaurant on the side.

"This is Ambler Gas Station…"

As Bai Ye reached the entrance, he heard the voice again.

Walking into the restaurant, he saw a radio on a side table, continuously broadcasting that same message.

Then, Bai Ye looked up at the restaurant, his brow furrowing.

A strong smell of blood permeated the restaurant, and on the ground around him, Bai Ye saw fragments of bone, including a complete leg bone – a human one.

Taking a deep breath, Bai Ye slowly circled around the tables and walked forward.

At that moment…

From behind a vertical table, two figures suddenly sprang out. Holding a cloth bag, they swung it towards Bai Ye, and a large cloud of white powder drifted in his direction.

Bai Ye quickly covered his eyes and pulled the trigger.

With his vision obscured, Bai Ye couldn't confirm the opponents' positions. He could only slowly shift the muzzle of his gun, sweeping it horizontally, preventing them from getting close.

But…

There was someone behind Bai Ye as well!

A woman pushed aside the table used for cover, darted out from behind Bai Ye, and violently slammed into his back, knocking him to the ground. Then, like a wild wolf, she pounced on him and grabbed his throat!
