The police arrived quickly and took Shen Qingqing and the necklace as evidence.
Feng Yilian pestered Director Feng, insisting on going along, hoping to get Shen Qingqing convicted at the police station and ideally get rid of her once and for all.
Director Feng agreed.
Thus, a group of them descended upon the police station.
The police clearly recognized Director Feng, treating him with great deference. As they stood around chatting, the captain, a man of similar age to Director Feng, looked at Feng Yilian beside him and complimented her, “Last time I saw you, you were just a little girl. Now you’ve grown into such a beautiful young woman.”
Feng Yilian smiled shyly, “Thank you, Uncle.”
As the captain was a native of Country H, they communicated in English. Feng Yilian then used English to lodge her complaint, “Uncle, this woman stole my things. She’s not a good person. Hurry and arrest her and teach her a lesson. Oh, and she’s not from Country H, so after you teach her a lesson, you should deport her back to her country.”
The captain glanced at Shen Qingqing. While he was struck by her beauty, the Feng family’s influence was, after all, more important.
“Alright, I’ll handle it for you.”
Feng Yilian cast a triumphant glance at Shen Qingqing and provocatively said, “You just stay here obediently. I’ll let Jing Shu know about this.”
With that, she linked arms with her father and swaggered towards the exit.
“Stop right there.”
Shen Qingqing suddenly spoke.
Feng Yilian thought she had finally swallowed her pride and was about to beg for mercy. Excitedly, she turned around, “It’s too late to beg now.”
“Who said I intended to beg for mercy?” Shen Qingqing glanced at her coolly and then turned to the captain, “To detain me, you must have evidence, right?”
The captain looked at the table, where the necklace, sealed in a bag, was placed.
“Isn’t the evidence right there?”
“But if you claim the necklace was stolen by me, then my fingerprints should be on it,” Shen Qingqing said calmly. “I believe you have fingerprint analysis machines here.”
The captain hesitated and looked at Director Feng.
He didn’t know what was going on or if fingerprints could be checked.
Director Feng, in turn, looked at Feng Yilian. She immediately declared loudly, “You can’t check! The necklace was touched by the servants, so your fingerprints won’t be there anymore. What if you blame the servants later?”
Director Feng found her reasoning sound and nodded in agreement.
Even the captain echoed his sentiment.
Shen Qingqing caught sight of someone entering out of the corner of her eye, a glint of amusement flashing in her eyes. She raised her voice, “Without checking fingerprints, without verifying the authenticity of evidence, is this your standard for handling cases?”
“What are you implying?” the captain said, displeased. “We have our own established procedures for handling cases.”
He didn’t want to listen to Shen Qingqing’s useless ramblings any longer, so he called for two officers, intending to forcibly escort Shen Qingqing away.
“What’s going on?”
Everyone started at the voice and quickly made way. A tall, imposing middle-aged man entered from the doorway. His expression was solemn, and his eyes were sharp.
The captain immediately went forward, “Director, there’s a case. It’s a minor matter, no need to trouble you.”
“Make way.”
The director’s gaze swept around, finally settling on Shen Qingqing. Ignoring the captain completely, he pushed him aside and strode towards her.
“It’s you!”
Shen Qingqing smiled, “Long time no see, Chris.”
Chris appraised her from head to toe, a smile blooming on his face. “As you people say, it’s… a blessing in disguise… No, that’s not it… serendipitous! Yes, that’s what they say!”
He had been looking for her, and now she had walked right into his hands.
Shen Qingqing asked, “Is there something wrong with your mother’s health?”
Speaking of which, Chris was filled with gratitude. “No, my mother is doing very well, thanks to you. But I do need your help with something now.”
“Please, tell me.”
“Well, it’s difficult to explain in a few words. Why don’t you come with me?”
Chris had always been a steady person, but he became impatient only when it involved his wife. The captain beside him was utterly bewildered.
Hearing their conversation, did the director know her?
Seeing Chris about to lead Shen Qingqing away, Feng Yilian panicked, “You can’t take her away! She’s a thief!”
The captain froze.
This girl truly didn’t know her place. Didn’t she know who their director was to speak to him like that!
It’s over!
Chris indeed stopped and frowned at Feng Yilian, “What thief? This lady is my friend. Her family background makes it impossible for her to steal.”
“But the stolen goods were found!”
Feng Yilian said urgently.
Chris’s sharp gaze fell on the so-called evidence on the table, merely a necklace. He didn’t believe Shen Qingqing would need to steal something like this.
“What exactly happened, Shen?”
Shen Qingqing couldn’t explain everything at once, only insisting, “In any case, if you check, you’ll know if my fingerprints are on it.”
Chris waved his hand, “Check it.”
With his command, the captain had no choice but to comply. Director Feng initially thought there was nothing to lose by checking, but then he saw his daughter breaking out in a cold sweat.
His heart sank.
Fingerprint analysis takes time, about half an hour. During this period, Chris chatted with Shen Qingqing, briefly explaining his wife’s illness.
The captain and Director Feng were left on the sidelines.
Director Feng tried to strike up a conversation with the director several times. He had always wanted to build a good relationship with Chris, as his connections would make many things convenient.
But Chris was arrogant and difficult to approach.
Yet, he was on extremely good terms with Shen Qingqing. If it were because of Fu Jingshu, he wouldn’t have mentioned Fu Jingshu at all, clearly indicating a purely friendly relationship with Shen Qingqing.
Why was that?
Director Feng couldn’t fathom it, and his heart grew uneasy.
The captain, on the other hand, was even more so. His heart was practically pounding out of his chest.
If he had known Chris knew this woman, he would never have taken this case!
Soon, the results were out. Shen Qingqing’s fingerprints were not found. Only those of Feng Yilian and two servants were present. Shen Qingqing stood with her hands in her pockets, a half-smile on her face.
“Well, Miss Feng?”
Feng Yilian retorted, “I told you it couldn’t be detected!”
Chris glanced at the captain, who wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and quickly said, “Don’t talk nonsense. Once fingerprints are left, they cannot be erased, and it’s impossible not to find them.”
Not to mention that Feng Yilian’s fingerprints were on the necklace before…
Feng Yilian’s face turned pale.
At this moment, Shen Qingqing spoke, “Apologize.”
Feng Yilian refused without a second thought, “I won’t! Why should I apologize to you? You were the one who trespassed into my room. You were acting suspiciously, and even if you didn’t steal anything, you must have had ill intentions!”
Since she refused to apologize, she looked at Director Feng, silently begging with a pout.
Director Feng also felt that apologizing today would be a loss of face. He cleared his throat and tried to mediate, “My daughter is young and mischievous and misunderstood you. I apologize to you on her behalf. Let’s just let this matter go. An apology in public would be too embarrassing for a young lady. Furthermore, you should not enter my daughter’s room so casually in the future.”
“This would easily lead to her misunderstanding.”
He attempted to shift the focus.
