Chapter 626: This Winter Feels Especially Cold

Chapter 626: This Winter Feels Especially Cold

The deliciousness of winter hotpot had spread to everyone, and the variation of dishes that use mochi had increased, so there probably won’t be any mochi leftover this season.

That said, though it’s the season for hotpots, winter this year is colder than expected.

「Of course. The climate can’t be absolutely identical year after year.」

I must have voiced out my thoughts. Sylph said that it was nothing to worry about as it wasn’t strange.

Thinking about more, even when I lived in Japan, I did hear the terms “warm winter” and “cool summer”, and it did feel like there were differences in the temperature during summers and winters yearly.

And so, there was one item that I wanted.

I wouldn’t be allowed to place it in the living room, so I’ll use it in my room.

I moved to my workshop and took wood out from the Item Box.

I transmuted a square low table.

I then made a matching tabletop for it.

Up until this point, the shapes had been pretty simple, so it was fine to just transmute them without much thought.

「That table is quite curious.」

「Yeah, I suppose the low table looks weird.」

Laeva’s curiosity seemed to have been piqued.

「Moreover, isn’t that height strange?」

「Well, this height is just right.」

Low tables must not exist in this world.

The people of this world basically walk into their houses with their shoes on.

They had room shoes that were easy to put on and take off, after all.

Ah, if this is the case, maybe I should have a no-shoe policy in the room with the kotatsu.

Yes, I was making a kotatsu, which the Japanese need when it gets cold.

I remember sitting in a kotatsu and eating so many mandarin oranges that my hands turned yellow.

I installed a magic device to heat it up.

It needed a temperature control feature. I also had make countermeasures against toasted skin syndrome.

「Could this perhaps be a heating device? Wait, if that is the case, the shape of the table is strange.」

「Now, now, I’ll let you try it out when it’s done, so just watch for now.」

Laeva was constantly puzzled.

I don’t have a quilt cover for the kotatsu right now, so even if they knew it was a heating element, no one from this world would intuitively understand how it would work.

I still need the quilt cover and a thin mat underneath.

And so, I was enlisting Kaede’s help.

「Master, you called?」

「Yeah, I have a request.」

「Mm, okay!」

Maybe she was happy to have finally gotten a request from me for the first time in a long while, but Kaede was hyped up.

I immediately asked her for a cover that I could jam cotton into.

「Hey, hey, Master. are you not going to put stuffing made from my threads inside it?」

「Eh, you can do that?」

「Yup, I can!」

「Then please do.」

Kaede quickly extracted her silk and weaved it into cloth.

After a while of watching her, I noticed that Kaede was weaving several pieces of fabric.

「Hm? Do we need that many pieces?」

「That’s not it, Master. I’ll dye them into different colors!」

「I see, so it’s like a patchwork quilt?」

It probably wouldn’t be exactly like a patchwork quilt, but I understood Kaede’s image.

Still, a patchwork quilt would work for the mat underneath.

「Okay, now we just need to dye it!」

Kaede took out several barrel-like containers from within her own Magic Bag.

When she opened the lid, it was filled with liquid.

「Are those dyes, by any chance?」

「That’s right~ I collected all sorts of colors!」

「Woah, since when?」

When I asked how she got that many types of dye, she mentioned discussing how to acquire dyes of various colors

Given how she mentioned Dryas, these had to be plant-based dyes, and I just remembered those existed.

As that was happening, Kaede dipped the fabrics in various dyes.

「Master, dry these with magic please.」

「Ah, yeah, okay.」

After asking me to dry it, Kaede then started cutting and sewing the dyed fabrics together. She was lightning fast.

Before we knew it, the mosaic-patterned cloth was complete.

Kaede weaved another cloth of the same size to line the mosaic fabric and dyed it a strong grey.

She then produced the threads that would be used as stuffing.

Come to think of it, was it called silk wadding? In that case, Kaede’s threads were more than enough.

It does feel just a bit luxurious, though.

As I was thinking that, the kotatsu quilt cover was completed.

Then, just like before, I asked Kaede to make a mat that felt like the quilt cover too.

「It’s done!」

「Ohh, thanks Kaede.」

I lifted Kaede and gave her my thanks.

「So what are you going to use this for?」

「Ahh, shall we head to my room to try it?」

「Yup, let’s go!」

「Can Laeva also join?」

「Of course, that’s fine.」

I stored the kotatsu and the quilt cover into my Item Box temporarily, and we moved to my room.

「Now then, I’m going to purify the room just in case.」

The maids clean it up well, but I purified it using magic to make sure.

I then laid out the mat, then put the kotatsu table on top of it then covered that with the quilt.

「Oh, you put it over the low table from a while ago?」

Laeva was curious, but I placed the tabletop over it without minding her.

「Okay, that should do it. Try copying me.」

I removed my shoes, entered the kotatsu, and switched on the magic heating device.

「Ooh! Is this a home heater for a small number of people!?」

「Yaaay! Looks fun!」

Laeva and Kaede mimicked me and entered the kotatsu, so I took out the mandarins from my Item Box and placed them in the Item Box.

「You go in the kotatsu then eat mandarins like this.」

「Kaede will eat mandarins too!」

「Laeva will also partake.」

In the end, the two really enjoyed the kotatsu, and the three of us lost track of time enjoying ourselves.

Seeing this, Maribelle scolded us, but why were we being scolded?
