Chapter 58: Xie Daiyu: Set my mind on you
Xie Daiyu sighed. He was annoyed and frustrated. He did understand why his mother was doing this, and ultimately, she was only looking out for him, but what was he supposed to do now? After realising that Ruan Chanchan was his destined one, he just couldn’t stay away from her. With a raise of his hand, he rubbed the spot where his heart was. Even now, he could feel it beating erratically.
Sighing again, he raised his head and looked up. However, the second he raised his head, he saw Ruan Chanchan sneaking out of his cave. His eyes widened, and he raised his hands to rub his eyes; however, as he pulled his hands away from his eyes, Ruan Chanchan was still glittering with a subtle glow that looked even more majestic and shiny in the darkness.
Is this the effect of the fate bond? Thought Xie Daiyu with a hint of a frown on his face. If so, then how was he supposed to look at Ruan Chanchan without going blind? This was not good. Maybe he needed to go to Priestess Yuan and ask her to give him something that would stop these side effects.
He couldn’t go on with his life if Ruan Chanchan shimmered like those fireballs in the sky.
But before that, he walked over to the entrance of the cave where Ruan Chanchan was sneaking out of. As he came to stop behind her, Xie Daiyu called out, "Where do you think you are going?"
Ruan Chanchan stiffened when she heard the familiar voice. She turned and looked at Xie Daiyu, who was standing behind her. One look at the mer who was staring at her with a gaze so intense that she could feel goosebumps break all over her skin. She raised her hand and waved at Xie Daiyu. "Hi?"
However, Xie Daiyu was not amused. He stared at her sheepish smile and calmly repeated, "Where are you going?"
Ruan Chanchan realised that the mer wouldn’t let her divert the topic. So, she could only sigh as she said to the mer, "Nowhere. I am going back home." She jutted her fingers behind her and explained, "You know the cave where I live."
"Without taking responsibility?" Xie Daiyu asked with a tilt of his head. Originally, he was not going to corner Ruan Chanchan like this, but the woman dared to run away from him, which didn’t sit too well with him. She was his destined one, and yet she was avoiding him like this.
Ruan Chanchan stiffened. This was what she was worried about. Now she felt a bit aggrieved. If Nuan Nuan had allowed her to escape earlier, then she would have escaped this cave without running into Xie Daiyu. Now that she was caught by this mer, Ruan Chanchan was worried that he wouldn’t let her off that easily.
"What responsibility?" Ruan Chanchan turned her head away. She tried her best not to look at the mer, but how could Xie Daiyu allow that? He continued to stare at her, and when the woman looked away, he leaned his body slightly to the left and pushed his face in front of Ruan Chanchan to make sure that she was looking at him.
He said to her, "You don’t have to act like a fool with me. I know that you know what it means when a mer brings a woman to his bed. You know that I have claimed you, don’t you?"
"No, you didn’t!" Ruan Chanchan squeaked. She whipped her head in a hurry, and as soon as she turned her head, she realised that the mer at some point had reduced the distance between the two of them. If she hadn’t paused, Ruan Chanchan was certain that their lips would have brushed against one another. Fortunately, she was able to stop herself just in time or else, who knows, this mer would have dragged her to hold a sacred mating ceremony tomorrow.
She carefully stepped away from the mer and then said to him, "I don’t understand what you are trying to say. What claim? We didn’t even do anything." She was speaking the truth. Even though Ruan Chanchan understood that in this world, the mers were the decision-makers when it came to mating and imprinting, while the women took the backroom, Ruan Chanchan thought that it was a bit barbaric.
Just because Xie Daiyu brought her to his cave and let her sleep in his bed, she needed to mate with him and accept his claim; she didn’t want to agree with it.
Xie Daiyu arched a brow while Ruan Chanchan stared right back at him stubbornly. She was not going to agree with whatever nonsensical argument he had prepared for her. This time around, she was definitely going to fight this mer and hold her ground.
"Alright."
"I am telling you—wait? What?" Ruan Chanchan raised her head and looked at the mer. She slowly let his answer process in her mind and soon realised that he had actually agreed not to pursue the matter. Though Ruan Chanchan was suspicious about why this mer was being so easy to get along with, she still happily smiled and nodded at Xie Daiyu.
"See, it wasn’t that difficult, right?" Ruan Chanchan said to him. "The next time, you need to be a bit more careful. Don’t agree to be with someone just because that woman had slept in your bed or something of the sort."
Xie Daiyu was amused by Ruan Chanchan’s words. He tilted his head to one side and then spoke to her in a low growl, "Ruan Chanchan, do you really not understand my actions, or are you pretending to be confused?"
"Ah?" Ruan Chanchan blinked her eyes and stared at the mer with a confused gaze.
Seeing this, Xie Daiyu leaned forward with his arms crossed in front of his chest. He said to her, "When I said that I am willing to let you go, I didn’t mean to say that I have forgotten about this incident. Ruan Chanchan, when a mer brings a woman to his bed, it means that he has set his eyes on her and is willing to have her babies."
"So I am willing to let you go tonight, but by no means am I letting go of the idea of you being the mother of our children. So, you’d better prepare yourself so that the next time we are together, you won’t sneak out of the cave like this."
