Chapter 48 The Mole Three

"If you two don't quiet down, you can get off my boat!" Anna snapped, her temples throbbing.

The boat fell silent instantly.

"Help! Me! Ah!" A scream echoed from inside the cabin, like an arrow shot from the darkness, startling everyone and sending them scrambling back. Da Huang, the dog, began to bark wildly.

"Don't panic, it's Manager Gong!" Old Man Wang said, frowning, recognizing Gong Dalong's voice.

It was pitch black in there, and no one wanted to go check. Old Man Wang had no choice but to stand up and head towards the cabin.

Jia Wenjun didn't want the old man going alone, so she got up to follow and see what was happening.

"How can you two able-bodied men let an old man and a woman go? Have you no shame?" Anna berated Hu Sixiang and Lü Maowang. If anything else happened to anyone on this boat, she'd be beside herself.

Called out by name, Lü Maowang stood up, but Hu Sixiang remained seated. "It's enough for Boss Lü to go with them. My child is here, and I need to protect him, and you all."

Anna scoffed inwardly. This man was truly selfish, cowardly, and obsessed with saving face. But considering the potential dangers on the boat, and the fact that the deck was now full of women, having one man stay behind, however useless, might at least be intimidating.

Thinking this, she said nothing.

Old Man Wang and Jia Wenjun groped their way through the darkness of the boat, with Lü Maowang following behind.

Jia Wenjun turned on the flashlight on her phone. She only had thirty percent battery left, and each time she turned it on, it drained the power, so she avoided using it unless absolutely necessary.

The three of them reached the door of cabin number seven. The flashlight beam landed on the door, and a pale face suddenly appeared from the shadows within.

"Ah!" The scream came from Lü Maowang, who was at the rear. He didn't bother about Jia Wenjun and Old Man Wang in front of him, but turned and ran back to the deck.

The sudden appearance startled Jia Wenjun as well, but she didn't believe in such things. Besides, Old Man Wang was there, and she couldn't abandon him. So, she forced herself to remain calm and grabbed the old man's arm.

Old Man Wang had seen a lot in his life and wasn't easily frightened. He was just startled.

Seeing someone run away in fright, Bai Ma Shan said, "Don't be afraid, it's just me, Lao Bai."

Jia Wenjun watched Bai Ma Shan slowly emerge from the cabin, leaning on the doorframe. A chill ran down her spine, and she instinctively took a step back.

"Oh, you're finally awake." Old Man Wang hurried forward to support him.

"Manager Gong was calling for you. Why don't you go in and see him?" Bai Ma Shan said, looking at Jia Wenjun, who was completely tense.

"... Okay." Jia Wenjun didn't know how she managed to get past Bai Ma Shan and into the room. She just felt that there was something strange about the way he looked at her.

Bai Ma Shan and Old Man Wang walked towards the deck, while Jia Wenjun went to Gong Dalong's side, her voice trembling slightly. "What's wrong?"

"Wenjun, my leg hurts terribly. Can you take a look? Also, I'm starving and thirsty. I want something to eat." Gong Dalong lay in the darkness, unable to see Jia Wenjun's expression.

"I'm not a doctor, I can't examine you. The food and water on the boat are limited. I'll have Sun Jiaojiao bring you your share later." Jia Wenjun's voice was devoid of warmth as she continued, "What time did you enter this room last night?"

"What?"

"I'm asking you when you came in here."

"... What's it to you? I don't remember." Gong Dalong didn't think he needed to explain himself to a subordinate.

"You'd better think carefully. And think about anything unusual Bai Ma Shan did last night."

Gong Dalong was startled and, gritting his teeth against the pain, asked, "What do you mean? You suspect Bai Ma Shan?"

Jia Wenjun neither confirmed nor denied it, but turned to leave. "I'll send Sun Jiaojiao in."

Sun Jiaojiao was roasting by the fire, her eyes constantly scanning the pile of food. Whether it was psychological or because she was pregnant and had a larger appetite, she didn't feel full at all from what she had just eaten. She was still hungry.

Thinking of the candies she had in her bag, she was just about to find a quiet place to eat some when she saw Jia Wenjun coming over, asking her to take Gong Dalong's share of the food to him.

Sun Jiaojiao didn't refuse, but took the food and went in, closing the door behind her.

Bai Ma Shan was wrapped in a thin blanket. His coat was in his suitcase, which had been taken to the second floor, so he had to make do with the blanket to keep warm.

Jia Wenjun returned to her original seat, her eyes constantly watching Bai Ma Shan out of the corner of her eye. She was hesitating whether it was the right time to reveal her suspicions. After all, he could find excuses to explain the scratches on his body and the underwear.

How could she strike a decisive blow?

Just as she was pondering this, Bai Ma Shan picked up his share of food and water and actually came over and sat down next to Jia Wenjun, saying that it was closer to the fire and warmer there.

Jia Wenjun clenched her fists, suppressing the nausea churning within her, and avoided looking at him.

"Have you eaten?" Bai Ma Shan asked her.

Jia Wenjun took a deep breath. "Yes."

Bai Ma Shan nodded and began to eat slowly. Even though he was starving, his table manners were still elegant. If she hadn't seen the injuries on his body, she wouldn't have been able to connect him with the villain.

Feeling the sense of isolation, Jia Wenjun didn't say anything, but directly offered Bai Ma Shan a plate of grilled fish. There was a lot of fish left, especially after everyone had watched the video. No one else had touched the fish that Jia Wenjun had grilled.

Bai Ma Shan's eyes lit up when he saw the food. He grabbed it and devoured it, tears streaming down his face. "I never thought... I never thought I'd still be alive! It's so good."

"Slow down, there are bones!" Lü Maowang said, seeing Bai Ma Shan wolfing down the food.

Bai Ma Shan coughed strangely, but seemed unharmed. His mouth continued to chew, refusing to stop. At almost the same time, Sun Jiaojiao rushed out of the room, retching and vomiting the fish she had just eaten. Without pausing, she glanced at the listless people sitting on the deck, then quickly went back inside and closed the door.

"Hey, why aren't you guys eating? Aren't you hungry? Have you already eaten?" Bai Ma Shan wiped away his tears and waved at everyone.

"It's okay, we've already eaten, Brother Bai, you go ahead and eat," Hu Sixiang said.

No one noticed, or rather, everyone was still caught up in the shadow of the video.

But Jia Wenjun remained silent, even though Bai Ma Shan eventually turned his head back towards her. Jia Wenjun didn't say a word, but stared intently at Bai Ma Shan.

"Could he be the murderer?"

Jia Wenjun felt as if she were facing a formidable enemy. This ominous premonition seemed to indicate that Bai Ma Shan might be the one who killed Zhao Di.

Bai Ma Shan's gaze also lingered on Jia Wenjun's face. For a full three seconds, their eyes met, and Bai Ma Shan's chewing slowly stopped.

Bai Ma Shan also realized that Jia Wenjun's attitude towards him was cold. "Did something just happen?" he asked.

"Nothing," Jia Wenjun told herself to remain calm.

"Big Brother Bai, what happened to you? You fainted for so long. You scared us to death," Lü Maowang said.

"I tripped over a shelf down below. Luckily, you found me in time and saved me. Thank you, everyone," Bai Ma Shan said, standing up to bow to everyone. The boat was rocking quite violently, and he accidentally kicked the fire pit. Sparks flew out, heading straight for Jia Wenjun.

Fortunately, Jia Wenjun was agile enough to avoid them. Any slower, and the sparks would have landed on her face.

Jia Wenjun's heart sank. Did he know she had discovered something, and was he warning her?

It was a lie to say she wasn't afraid. He already knew she suspected him. But even if she didn't say anything, would he let her go? Considering how cunning and scheming he was, he probably never intended to let anyone on the boat leave alive.
