Chapter 405 What a Messy World
Dr. Powell, who was closest to her, quickly stopped her. “Don’t go over there, Carol, he’s a murderer.”
“Humph… why…” Barton looked up, gazing at Carol with a compassionate expression. “Pitiful woman… in every sense of the word, you deserve sympathy… perhaps when you understand the truth, you’ll thank me instead…”
“Mr. Feng, can you explain what’s going on here?” Miss Nancy, kneeling beside her father, asked.
“It’s a long story~” Feng Bujue was in storyteller mode. “First, allow me to introduce Mr. Barton here…” He put down his knife and fork, wiped his mouth, and pointed. “He is the eldest son of Mr. Kolston Lovecraft.”
Apart from Feng Bujue and Detective Scofield, everyone else in the room looked surprised. Although Feng Bujue had already mentioned the name "John Lovecraft," the official revelation of his identity still shocked everyone.
“Don’t say anymore!” Kolston shouted from the floor. “I confess! I killed Dennis! Arrest me! Officer! I want to confess!”
“This isn’t a medieval religious court, Mr. Lovecraft,” Feng Bujue said coldly. “This is a country with a sound legal system; convictions require evidence.” He shrugged. “Even the Mafia consults a lawyer before finding a scapegoat or committing perjury, right?”
He looked down at the desperate old man with a weary gaze. “Humph… do you think… your actions are noble and great at this moment? In my opinion, even if you take the blame, it’s not a sacrifice. You brought this situation upon yourself.”
“Don’t go too far!” Jack couldn’t stand it anymore. He already understood Feng Bujue’s implication and said loudly, “You’re saying Barton is my father’s illegitimate son, so what? It’s not like he killed my brother! He just lost one son and is about to lose another, it’s only natural he’d react this way, can’t you show some compassion?”
“Ha!” Feng Bujue laughed. “Are you sure Dennis is your biological brother?” He paused, then suddenly turned to Henderson, the butler. “Or rather… are you sure Dennis is a Lovecraft?”
At that, everyone in the room turned to Henderson. The butler’s face was pale, his whole body trembling. Even though he was sitting in a chair, he looked like he was about to fall.
As an outsider, Scofield couldn't help but sigh inwardly, "This family is a real mess..."
“I don’t know how much you all know about genetics, but I think Dr. Powell should know something.” Feng Bujue said as he took two photos from the paper bag. “These two photos were also found in Kolston’s safe.”
“Uh…” Officer Dempside couldn’t resist interrupting. “I mean… Mr. Feng, I can understand if the door to the room wasn’t locked; but a safe… how did you open that?”
“Oh, the safe used a mechanical lock, I can handle it with a stethoscope,” Feng Bujue replied casually.
“Wait… a stethoscope…” Powell twitched, a bad feeling rising in his heart. “You…”
“That’s right, I swiped it from your room,” Feng Bujue smiled. “Doctor, your deduction skills aren’t bad.”
“You’re wasting your talent not being a master thief…” Powell muttered dejectedly.
“Alright, let’s get back to the photos.” Feng Bujue held up the photos and showed them to everyone. “These two photos are of Kolston with his two wives.” He paused. “We can see that his first two wives, one was a redhead, one was a brunette.” He turned the photos over and looked at them. “I must say, your life has always been accompanied by beautiful women, Mr. Lovecraft. Unfortunately, the women who married you all died young.” He paused for a second and looked up at Mrs. Odette. “Don’t mind me, Madam, just saying.”
Feng Bujue then turned to Jack and Nancy and said, “Young Master Jack and Miss Nancy are both blond, the same as their father when he was young.” He pointed to the woman in the first photo. “Considering the possibility of recessive genes, what’s the probability that Kolston’s child with his first wife would have brown hair?” He licked his lips. “If hair color isn’t enough to illustrate the problem, then combining dominant hereditary factors like double eyelids and a cleft chin… who does Dennis resemble more?” He turned to the butler and said, “Mr. Henderson, although your hair is already gray, I can observe from your facial features, eye color, cheekbones, and other characteristics that you seem to have some Latin or Germanic ancestry…”
“Yes, Dennis… is my son, my son with the first wife…” Henderson interrupted Jue Ge, but couldn’t finish the sentence. He gritted his teeth and lowered his head.
“Henderson! You…” Jack had been close to the butler since he was a child, but he never expected that this man had an affair with his mother.
“A delightful and predictable plot twist, isn’t it? Hehe…” Feng Bujue was the only one in the room who could still laugh. “A dashing and wealthy man, already with a beautiful wife at home, still had to have an affair outside, even having a child with his mistress first.” He put the photos back in the paper bag. “So, his legal wife used similar methods to retaliate against her husband.”
As he spoke, Jue Ge stood up and paced around the spacious dining room, as if he were taking a post-meal stroll. “And the foreshadowing of all the tragedy was already laid forty years ago.” He gestured to a chair beside him. “You all should help Mr. Lovecraft into a chair, you can’t all listen to me while he’s sitting on the floor, right?”
Odette, Jack, and Nancy were in a daze. They had not yet recovered from the shock, so they simply did as Feng Bujue suggested.
A moment later, after Kolston had sat down again, Feng Bujue took out a few fax papers from the paper bag and began to read. “Now that we’ve clarified the relationships between these people, the next explanation will be simple, let’s start with Mr. Barton…”
