Chapter 392 Korston's Narration (Part 2)
“What are you even talking about…” Korsten was shocked. This theory was simply absurd… who would pretend to be a cripple for three years just to murder his own son? Wouldn't pretending to sprain your leg three days before the murder have the same effect?
“But in reality… you’re still agile. With your skills as a retired soldier, killing someone is a piece of cake.” Feng Bujue continued, “As for the motive… I think everyone in this house saw it today… You even fired two shots when you argued with Dennis, which shows that you've been忍无可忍 (rěn wú kě rěn - enduring the unendurable) for a long time. If you weren't afraid of being easily caught after a shooting, you would have aimed somewhere other than the ceiling, right?”
“You!” Korsten was finally provoked and became another statistic in Jue Ge’s mocking record. He roared in uncontrollable anger, “You bastard! What the hell are you talking about!”
“What’s wrong… are you angry because I exposed you…” Feng Bujue maintained his arrogant expression and said, “Or do you think there's a flaw in my impeccable reasoning?”
“Hey… is there even a part of your riddled-with-holes reasoning that *isn't* a flaw…” Schofield continued to complain in his heart. Because what Jue Ge said was too ridiculous, the detective was too embarrassed to chime in.
“You…” After cursing a few times, Korsten seemed to calm down a little. He was still a reasonable person, so he replied, “You can ask Doctor Powell about my physical condition.” He glared at Feng Bujue. “If you think the doctor has also been bribed by me, I can show you proof from the best hospital in the country, as well as my insurance records.”
Feng Bujue immediately put on an awkward expression and stammered, “Uh… i-is that… really so…”
Korsten continued, “So, do you still think killing someone is a piece of cake for me?”
Feng Bujue stroked his chin and pondered, “But it's a fact that you had a heated argument with Dennis today…” He suddenly seemed enlightened. “Oh! Right! Doctor Powell must be the killer! After you argued with Dennis and kicked him out, you and Powell secretly plotted the murder in the room. He was the executor, and you were the mastermind.”
“I just had Powell take my blood pressure and inject me with today’s medication at the time,” Korsten replied. “I do that every day.” He paused for a moment. “Besides, why would Doctor Powell kill someone for me? He's not a killer. Are you saying that if I just told someone working at the villa, 'I'll give you money to kill someone for me,' that person would do it?”
“That’s hard to say…” Feng Bujue said, turning his back to the other man and slowly walking towards the desk. At that moment, his eyes changed, and his tone became cold. “If you’re determined to kill someone, there’s always a way.” He probed, “It depends on how serious the conflict between you and Dennis really was…”
“He’s my son! What conflict could we have?” Korsten retorted, “Even… even if there were some disputes, it would never lead to murder!”
“Oh? Then please tell me… what was the core of your argument today?” Feng Bujue asked.
“That's my family matter,” Korsten replied in a deep voice.
“Family matter?” Feng Bujue smiled. “Forgive me for speaking frankly, but if you can avoid the question with just these two words, then I estimate half of the homicides in the world would have no recorded confessions.” He began to mislead the other man, “From the time you and Dennis argued and fired the gun, to the time he was murdered and discovered, there was only a little over an hour in between.
“Mr. Korsten, you’re also a knowledgeable person. You should know very well that no matter who investigates this case, you will eventually have to answer this question—what exactly were you arguing about with Dennis?
“If you tell me now, only Detective Schofield and I will know about it. After the case is solved, no one will mention it again. But if you insist on not saying it, causing the case to be delayed… then one day, you’ll be forced to answer it on the witness stand or the defendant’s stand in court. There will be a jury, reporters, and a bunch of ordinary citizens watching the spectacle. The person asking you questions may be a prosecutor who hates the rich and is prejudiced. He will induce you to say more things that are detrimental to yourself. And all your answers will be recorded in court and even published in the newspapers.”
“Enough!” Korsten was fooled by Feng Bujue. Concern for the situation the other man described forced the old man to make a decision. “Since that's the case…” His gaze swept across Feng Bujue and Schofield’s faces. “I can tell you, but you have to promise that these words won’t reach anyone else’s ears, especially my family.”
“I promise, sir,” Schofield interjected from the side. “I’m a very tight-lipped person.”
Feng Bujue also said, “Don’t worry, these words will never leave this study.”
At this point, Jue Ge had finally succeeded… He had never doubted Korsten. The reason he went through such a big circle was to get the family head to say with his own mouth… what Dennis and he were arguing about.
Although Barton had already confided in Feng Bujue, Jue Ge didn't completely trust the gardener. So, he wanted to hear it from Korsten himself.
Of course, even if what Korsten said at this moment didn't match what Barton said, it wouldn't prove that Barton was lying. Anyway, Dennis was already dead, and Korsten could say whatever he wanted. He didn't know that Barton had gone to find Feng Bujue. There was also a third possibility—both of them were lying, which would make the situation even more complicated…
“Dennis wanted to monopolize my inheritance,” Korsten said. That was his answer.
“Hmm… monopolize, is it…” Feng Bujue knowingly asked, “In that case… you have a will? And the contents of this will are not very satisfactory to Dennis?”
“Yes, I have a will,” Korsten said. “But no one knows the contents of the will except me and my lawyer.” He paused for a few seconds. “Dennis naturally doesn't know either, but he believes… that I have allocated the inheritance to 'inappropriate people' in that will, so… we argued.”
These words were roughly consistent with what Barton said, but he was vague, obviously omitting Odetta’s name.
However… Feng Bujue vaguely felt that there were some hidden secrets in Korsten’s words…
