Yu You
The information Pei Xianglong vaguely revealed gave me a lot of motivation. The negative attitude of wanting to give up on Pei Shiyu just now was swept away. Shen Yi sitting across from me couldn't affect me at all anymore.
I secretly sized up Shen Yi again. His hairstyle was very fashionable, and the exposed forehead looked intelligent. The length of his bangs was just right, sticking to both sides of his face. Sitting next to Pei Shiyu, he gave off a mysterious feeling. Watching him carefully place the plate in front of Pei Shiyu, Pei Shiyu looked up at me. I smiled slightly, implying that I didn't mind Shen Yi's actions.
I didn't want to guess the extent of their previous relationship, just as long as she didn't give me that apologetic look again, because that would make me overthink.
"We'll sign the contract later, and Shiyu will go back to the company in the afternoon," Pei Xianglong said decisively.
Perhaps Pei Xianglong saw our knowing smile, which was why I curiously asked, "Haven't you been going to work these past few days?"
"She said she wasn't feeling well." Pei Xianglong answered.
But I couldn't see any signs of illness in Pei Shiyu, and she had a good appetite at noon. She ate half of the West Lake Fish in Vinegar Gravy that was served. I looked at her for a while and asked again, "Are you going to Nanjing with me in a few days?"
"Am I that free?"
"You can always squeeze out time if you try."
"Go ahead, I'll cover for you at the company," Pei Xianglong conceded.
As we were talking, someone suddenly patted my shoulder. I turned around and saw a friend I had made in prison, a very forthright person, just like his current attire. His black sweater had its sleeves rolled up high, and the tattoo on his entire right arm was completely exposed, giving him an unconventional look. But for me, my current situation was different. It wasn't that I had become vain.
The reason we became good friends in prison was because of the environment. We also talked a lot. Every time there was a conflict, he always stood on my side. Just as I was about to ask him to talk outside, I saw Pei Shiyu frown. Obviously, she was repulsed by this type of person.
So I could only lean in and say in his ear, "Let's talk outside. They're discussing important business."
He didn't cooperate with me by lowering his voice. Instead, he said exaggeratedly, "Lin Che, you're doing pretty well! You haven't forgotten about me, your brother, even after you've made it." His eyes were still fixed on Pei Shiyu's face. The whole thing made him look sleazy.
"Let's talk outside. They're my bosses. Don't affect their business negotiations."
"You're not looking down on me now, are you? You didn't act like this in prison."
I saw the eyes of the diners at the nearby tables all focused on us. Finally, I said coldly, "Go outside. People are eating here."
"I'm here to eat too. Let's have a few drinks at noon, bro."
As he said that, he put his arm around my shoulder, but I just wanted to get him away, at least to a seat farther away from Pei Shiyu and the others. With my increasingly changing image, I didn't want it to be ruined because of his appearance.
"Let's go, I'll treat you to a meal. Let's go to a private room on the second floor."
I shook off his arm and walked upstairs first.
Once inside the private room, I softened my tone and explained, "They were talking about investments just now, so it wasn't convenient for us to be there. You can drink as much as you want here. It's my treat today."
"You're a stand-up guy, then I won't stand on ceremony."
Looking at his nonchalant attitude, I was frankly disgusted. It wasn't that I had become realistic, but that in society or in life, this kind of person wasn't suitable for me. If he had been even slightly serious about his career today, I might have unhesitatingly helped him out. I had heard all about his experiences during his time in prison. Maybe he had a heroic side, but in my opinion, this kind of personality easily caused trouble and wasn't suitable for me to give him ideas or find a way out.
I personally brought over two cases of beer, opened them one by one for him, and then casually asked, "When did you get out?"
"A week ago. Do you have any way to make money?"
I smiled and replied, "How could I have any way out? I finally found a job and you almost ruined it."
"It's good that it's ruined. Let's plan to make big money together."
Although I also went in because of money, it was completely different from his nature. He was arrested for robbery. If we planned together as he said, it would just be waiting to commit another crime. Now, the only thing to do was to send this great god away, hoping to never see him again after he had eaten and drunk his fill.
When he had finished a case of beer, I went downstairs to take a look and found that Pei Shiyu and the others had already left. Today was supposed to be an opportunity to reconcile. I quietly looked at the seats they had just sat in, now empty. So they had been gone for a while.
Just as I was about to turn around, I saw my mom coming over and she asked, "Where did you go just now?"
I replied with some annoyance, "I ran into a friend from prison just now, and he insisted on dragging me for a few drinks. He's still drinking like crazy in the private room."
"If you want to change your life, don't associate with friends like that in the future."
"I just happened to run into him. He took care of me in prison. How could I refuse?"
"Your girlfriend left a while ago. Why are you still down here?" My mom scolded a little unhappily.
"I can't get away right now. I had a fight with Pei Shiyu and haven't contacted her for days. Today was her dad's treat, and he called her over."
"Who was that man?"
"Her ex-boyfriend," I said honestly.
"Are people's relationships a joke these days?"
"That's why we haven't talked for a long time."
"If you keep contacting friends like that, not to mention a girl like Pei Shiyu, even ordinary girls will run away. I've said what I need to say. Think about how to be a person yourself."
After scolding me, my mom turned around and left. I immediately grabbed her and said with a hint of pleading, "My friend is in private room number three on the second floor. Why don't you go and deal with him, say I've already paid the bill and left because I had something to do, how about that?"
"I'm not going to clean up your mess. Settle your own affairs yourself. If you meet him again next time, you'll still have trouble."
"It won't be that coincidental."
"Deal with it yourself. Escaping is the most foolish thing to do. When handling things, you have to get to the point."
"Then teach me, what should I say?"
"I've found that you're not even as good as Lin Hai in this regard!"
"Don't mention him." I immediately turned hostile.
"What's wrong? Did the paternity test results come out?"
"They're not father and son."
Mentioning this matter annoyed me. Since receiving the report, I've tried not to think about it. Lin Hai hasn't contacted me because I'm his biological son.
