Chapter 102 Things Aren't Simple
"Just say what you want to say," I said directly.
"The version I heard is indeed different from what you said."
"Then tell me, what did Lin Hai say in front of you?"
"Let's forget it. It's not good for me to gossip about other people's affairs. Your family is already messed up enough. Now that Lin Yang is dead, the grudges between you can be put to rest."
I knew Pei Shi Yu was a cautious person, but being so coy only piqued my curiosity. I immediately put on a stern face and said, "Tell me what you know. I'm not going to go to Lin Hai to argue."
"Don't force me to say things I don't want to," Pei Shi Yu replied firmly.
"Did Lin Hai say that my mom cheated first? Or that I'm not his biological son?"
The first half was true. It was something Lin Hai always said. The second half was just a guess… After I asked, Pei Shi Yu looked at me with a very surprised expression, as if I were a divine being. Did that mean I guessed correctly?
"Are you going to answer me or not? You're killing me here."
"How did you guess that?" Pei Shi Yu finally asked me back.
"Is it that strange to know something everyone knows? Even if you don't say it, he's always talking about it."
"So, who's telling the truth?"
"Believe what my mom said." My reply was even more firm than Pei Shi Yu's had been.
Pei Shi Yu didn't say anything else. I was curious about why she had come to my room uninvited…
"Did you need something from me?"
"No, I just got a little scared by what you said earlier."
"You're afraid to sleep alone tonight?" I asked, holding back a smile and staring at her face.
"What are you so happy about?"
"I'm happy that I can welcome you to squeeze in with me! How could I not be happy?"
"Who said anything about squeezing in with you?"
"Then go back. I'm going to call Xiao Wu. Lin Yang is in the country, half a world away. What's there to be afraid of?"
After I said that, Pei Shi Yu walked to the door but hesitated to open it. I watched her silently. She paused with her hand on the doorknob, then turned around and looked at me, saying, "Or you could just stay up all night. You can sleep on the plane tomorrow anyway."
"What do you mean? I go to your room to watch over you while you sleep soundly, and I have to keep an eye on you? Lin Yang needs someone to watch over his spirit, and you're…"
Before I could finish, Pei Shi Yu quickly let go of the doorknob, walked back to my side, and her attitude changed completely. She said to me in a very angry tone, "I said I was scared! Would it kill you to not say that?!"
"Don't curse the Lin family. Even if I'm not his biological son in Lin Hai's heart, as long as I still carry the Lin name, I'm the only one left. I can't die again."
I was originally just making a self-deprecating joke, but Pei Shi Yu's emotions instantly spiraled out of control. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. I saw the anger in her eyes. This time, she turned around and opened the door very decisively, slamming it shut behind her.
I stared blankly at the door that had just been slammed shut. This time, I really couldn't figure her out. I didn't know what nerve I had touched.
I stood there for a while and immediately followed her. I caught a glimpse of her as she walked towards the elevator. I sped up and caught up with her, asking, "What's wrong? What did I say wrong? Just tell me directly. It's so late. Where are you going?"
Pei Shi Yu ignored me and reached out to press the elevator button. I stepped in front of her, blocking her path, and observed her face to face. She was really angry. After spending these last few days together, I knew her pretty well. Even when I went from Germany to Italy, she hadn't treated me like this.
Before the elevator arrived, I grabbed her hand and gently tried to pull her back to the room. To my surprise, she didn't resist. I seized the opportunity and promised her, "If you're really scared, I won't sleep tonight. You can sleep soundly."
I thought she would be happy, but when we got to the door, Pei Shi Yu went into her own room without me, and I didn't even have a chance to go in. She quickly closed the door behind her.
I stood outside for a while and then went back to my room. Compared to Lin Yang's death, I was more focused on Pei Shi Yu's anger. Things were definitely not as simple as Xiao Wu had said.
I took out my phone and called Xiao Wu. He answered quickly. "Brother Lin."
"I was outside just now, so it wasn't convenient to talk. Tell me the details of what happened again."
"Chen Biao called Lin Hai over to deal with you in the first place. How could they get along after you left? I told you before that they were starting to argue again."
"Then, logically, Lin Hai should be the one who died!"
"The last time Lin Hai argued with Chen Biao, Lin Yang was being pretty cocky. Chen Biao might have held a grudge. Anyway, his death was pretty gruesome. His whole head was chopped off. Just imagine how Lin Hai feels. That's why he wanted you to come quickly. After all, he's your father. I was afraid that one wasn't enough, and he'd lose another one. A lot of criminal police officers came to the scene today."
Although I wasn't close to Lin Hai, it was still a family matter. Chen Biao was ruthless, and his conflict with Lin Hai was completely different.
"Then what does this have to do with you?" I asked, not understanding.
"I bought the knife that killed Lin Yang. I didn't know. Chen Biao and Ah Cheng didn't tell me what they were going to use it for. My fingerprints are on it."
"Did Chen Biao admit it?"
"No, he didn't actually kill him, or else what would I be worried about?"
"Then how do you know this has something to do with Chen Biao?" I was completely confused.
"I recognized the knife. I went to the scene today."
Hearing this, I couldn't relax. If only Xiao Wu's fingerprints were on it, then he would definitely be the first one they found. Before they found the murderer, Xiao Wu would become the prime suspect. It seemed like they had been planning this all along. Chen Biao hadn't really treated Xiao Wu like one of his own men. This kind of unwarranted framing was very insidious.
I lit a cigarette and thought for a while. If I let Xiao Wu go to the police to explain the situation, then Chen Biao would have to admit that he bought the knife. Since Chen Biao had planned this out, I didn't think he would tell the truth. Then another possibility popped into my head: could it have been Ah Cheng and Xiao Hei who did it?
I immediately asked Xiao Wu, "Did Ah Cheng and Xiao Hei go to the scene today?"
"I didn't see them. Chen Biao said he sent them out of town yesterday. They won't be back for a few days."
I pondered for a moment and said, "The police will definitely be looking for you tomorrow. Just tell them the truth. You might be taken into custody, but don't be afraid. Just wait for me to come back."
"I really didn't kill anyone."
I could tell that Xiao Wu was starting to lie. After all, a life was at stake. If Xiao Hei and Ah Cheng really did it, Chen Biao should have already arranged for them to run away.
