112 Were Never Brothers to Begin With

Having drunk a can of beer, although it wouldn't affect my driving, Pei Shiyu took the initiative to offer to drive this time.

I handed the keys to her directly. She took them and looked at the new keys from both sides…

"Reluctant?" she asked with a smile.

"It's only a few hundred thousand. It's still a bit different compared to your previous car."

"It's been parked for a long time. I'll drive it out tomorrow to get it washed."

I stared at her and asked, "Didn't you say you sold it last time?"

"Didn't you say you didn't want to drive it?"

"Don't change the subject."

"Before I went abroad, I did have plans to settle down, so I let you drive it first, but you refused. That night, I received a call from Xiaolong's aunt, who wanted to come and pick up Xiaolong. I thought, since Xiaolong could be taken care of, then even if I had to run back and forth, there was no need to sell the car."

"I wasn't refusing, I just thought it was too expensive. If I had a decent car of my own like I do now, I would feel better about driving yours."

"Inferiority complex, I can see it," Pei Shiyu said, moving her lips while holding the steering wheel.

"I want to go see Lin Hai. Do you know where they live?"

"You don't know?" Pei Shiyu asked in surprise.

"I only went there once when I was a teenager, and haven't been back since. I don't know if they've moved."

"In the bustling downtown area, the house looks good from the outside, but it should be quite old. Whether that's where you're going, I don't know."

"A small high-rise, gray tiles?" I confirmed.

"Yes, I've never been inside, Lin Yang just told me once when we passed by."

"I wonder where the body is placed?" I asked myself with some emotion.

"Do you want to go? If not, I'll turn around."

"Are you coming with me?"

"I won't drive you there. You can't drive yourself. I'll drop you off downstairs and wait for you in the car."

"Then let's go. I keep telling myself not to interfere in their family affairs, but when I think of my grandmother, my heart softens again."

"Lin Yang wasn't a bad person. His mother was just a little selfish. People from that era were basically the same, only loving their own children. Their way of thinking and doing things wasn't as compassionate as our generation."

Whether Pei Shiyu was trying to comfort me or trying to make me let go of my past grievances, at least it helped me let go of some things, including the harsh and indifferent side of Lin Hai's wife. In the face of death, everything could be put aside for the time being.

Lin Hai lived in a very lively area, with a large flow of people, whether it was the shops along the street or the people passing by. If I had to choose a place to live, I would still prefer a quieter one, just like Pei Shiyu's apartment, which was surrounded like a castle on the inside, yet bustling on the outside.

Although the overall structure of the neighborhood hadn't changed, I didn't recognize some of the surrounding buildings. The once unique building was now surrounded by high-rises and skyscrapers, and had lost its original grandeur in comparison.

Pei Shiyu dropped me off directly at the entrance of the neighborhood. I remembered that more than ten years ago, I didn't enter through this gate. After getting out of the car, I looked around and found myself a little lost. I had only been here a few times, and relying on my memory, I needed to know the direction to know which building it was.

Pei Shiyu didn't drive away immediately. Sitting in the car, she suddenly lowered the window and asked, "You don't even know which building it is?"

"I really forgot a bit. I used to enter through the east gate. I was relying on my memory, but now that the gate has changed, I can't even tell the directions."

"Should I call and ask?"

"Ask who?" I asked, staring at her curiously.

"Lin Yang."

I was shocked. Lin Yang might still be lying in the funeral home, but Pei Shiyu suddenly wasn't afraid or avoiding the topic. I had already taken a few steps, but I went back to her and said, "When we were in the United States, you said you were scared just hearing his name. Now that we're at his house, how come you're not afraid at all?"

"Isn't that because you're here?"

"So you want to scare me?"

"Then are you scared?"

"What's there to be afraid of? It's not like I killed him."

"If you can't find it, just go to the east gate and find your bearings, otherwise when will you find it?"

"That's a good idea. You wait for me at the gate, I won't be long."

I first figured out the directions and detoured to the east gate through the alleys between the buildings. The former main gate was now locked, with flower beds and other things blocking the passage. There wasn't even a security guard. I could tell from the lock on the iron gate that it had been changed many years ago.

I stood by the gate, using this method to get my bearings. I casually lit a cigarette, raised my head, and began to look at Lin Hai's building. My eyes suddenly fixed on one of the buildings, on the third floor, where there was a loud noise. Listening carefully, I could also hear crying.

If I guessed correctly, that should be Lin Hai's home. I didn't go there immediately. I even wondered if I should go in. With such a big thing happening, there should be many relatives at home. Would my appearance provoke his wife? What if she inexplicably blamed me? Wouldn't I be walking right into it? I had thought it was simple when I came, but at this moment, I became more cautious. Lin Hai would definitely think I was there to laugh at him.

After thinking for a while, I thought it was better not to go in. His wife wouldn't welcome me, and I could imagine her being sarcastic as soon as she saw me, and maybe even imagining things even more excessively.

I put out my cigarette and planned to return the way I came. Just as I saw the gate, I ran into Lin Hai, who was coming out from the other end. This time, I didn't say anything, just looked at his face. He used to have so much flesh that it reached his neck, but now he looked a lot thinner, and his condition was very poor. He also didn't say any sarcastic words. After a while, he asked, "What are you doing here?"

"I wanted to go up and see how things were, but I felt it wasn't appropriate, so I was planning to go back." I answered honestly.

"There's nothing to see. What else can you do when someone's dead?"

Lin Hai didn't act as hysterically as I had imagined. It seemed like he had seen through a lot of things. This was the appearance I saw in his eyes. Seeing him like this, I looked at him in a different light.

"Where is Lin Yang's body now?"

"Funeral home."

Lin Hai answered very simply. I wanted to say a few words of comfort, but seeing that he didn't want to talk much, I didn't want to ask too much. After all, asking too much would be rubbing salt in his wound.

I just said lightly, "When is the funeral? I'll be there that day. Although we weren't good brothers when he was alive, I have to see him off on his final journey..."

Lin Hai interrupted me, "We weren't brothers in the first place, so there's no need for you to come. Don't get involved in the Lin family's affairs. Just be your young master."

His hidden meaning made me a little confused. Could it really not be his son? With this question in mind, I kept staring at his face.
