Chapter 653 A Person Already on the Brink of Death

"Young General, something bad has happened... Feng Ruoyan has died in prison."

Lu Shi rushed in, his face filled with panic.

Ling Mohan's brows furrowed slightly, his usual composure wavering. He slowly put down the tea cup in his hand. "I had you watching, and you couldn't even handle this small matter? You let someone die!"

Hundreds of guards were stationed in the prison, yet they couldn't even keep an eye on Feng Ruoyan, allowing her to die within its walls.

"Young General, please forgive us. We were watching very carefully. Feng Ruoyan didn't commit suicide. In the blink of an eye, she stopped breathing. We don't know what happened."

He had already examined Feng Ruoyan's body. There were no external injuries, nor signs of suicide. It was likely that toxins already present in her body had flared up, causing her death.

Even with all his capabilities, it was difficult to control this situation.

"First, get the body out of the prison. Then, secretly arrange for her to be buried alongside Chu Yanxi."

This was his way of repaying Chu Yanxi, allowing the two to be together in the afterlife.

"Yes, Young General. Your subordinate will arrange it immediately."

Lu Shi quickly acknowledged, then turned and hurried out, worried that Ling Mohan might shift his anger onto him.

After Lu Shi left, Ling Mohan mulled over the matter, feeling it was far from simple. After much deliberation, he decided to seek out Feng Jin for a proper conversation, to get a clearer understanding.

Feng Jin had just finished washing up and was about to go to bed when the door to her room was pushed open from the outside. Ling Mohan's figure appeared before her.

"Who let you in? Get out! I don't want to see you right now. Go find your horse and sleep with it!"

The sight of Ling Mohan ignited a surge of anger within her, and she wished she could kick him out immediately.

Didn't he like his horse? Then he should go cuddle his horse and sleep, why bother her and create trouble for himself.

Despite being scolded, Ling Mohan showed no signs of anger. Instead, he brazenly sat on a chair, poured himself a cup of tea, and took a slow sip.

"Hurry up and get out. Don't be an eyesore. Seeing you brings me bad luck. I don't even want to look at you again!"

Feng Jin stood up angrily and walked directly to Ling Mohan, forcing herself to suppress the urge to kick him out.

Knowing he was in the wrong, Ling Mohan didn't argue with Feng Jin. He simply waited patiently for Feng Jin to vent her anger before speaking.

"Are you going to use silence to protest? Your temper has really gotten worse!"

Little did she know, Ling Mohan's current silence was precisely what angered Feng Jin the most. It felt like he was completely ignoring her existence, as if he were resorting to the silent treatment.

"That's not what I mean. You're clearly upset right now, and anything I say will be seen as wrong, no matter what. It's better if I stay quiet. When you've calmed down, I'll..."

"You'll what? Hurry up and get out! I don't want to see you, not even for a second. I don't want to see you now, and I certainly won't want to in the future!"

As soon as she finished speaking, she began pushing Ling Mohan towards the door. Ling Mohan, however, was utterly bewildered, completely unsure of what he had done to offend Feng Jin this time. Weren't they fine just moments ago? Why was her temper flaring up so much now?

Although he couldn't figure out why Feng Jin was angry, he knew very well that if he were kicked out now, he would never have another chance to enter.

He had endured a night in the study yesterday and was thoroughly chilled. Not only was there no charcoal fire in the middle of winter, but there wasn't even a bed in the study. He had pushed two tables together, wrapped himself in a quilt, and slept like that for the entire night.

Upon waking up in the morning, his back and waist were aching. Now, his neck and waist felt sore and painful with every slight movement.

Even if he had to beg shamelessly to stay, he would absolutely refuse to sleep in the study again.

The difference in strength between men and women was always significant. With a slight exertion of force from Ling Mohan, the situation immediately reversed. Taking advantage of Feng Jin's momentary lapse, Ling Mohan turned and swapped positions with her, finding himself already inside the room.

He then immediately headed towards the bed, threw back the covers, and flopped down.

By the time Feng Jin regained her senses, Ling Mohan was shamelessly sprawled on the bed, taking up the entire space.

"Get up! This is my bed. Go back to your room and sleep!"

Despite Feng Jin's attempts to drive him away, Ling Mohan showed no intention of leaving. Instead, he adopted a completely shameless demeanor. "This is Ling Manor. Every brick and tile belongs to me, including this courtyard. Naturally, this bed is also mine. It's only right that I sleep in my own bed."

Feng Jin's mouth twitched uncontrollably. She found Ling Mohan's reasoning utterly contemptible.

Was this still the Ling Mohan she knew? How had he become so shamelessly unreasonable?

A brief silence fell upon the room. Finally, Feng Jin broke the quiet, as she needed to go to bed. It was already so late, and she was terribly tired.

Moreover, it was the peak of winter. Although there was a charcoal fire in the room, she was only wearing a single layer of clothing, and standing there for so long had made her cold.

She didn't want to make do with another room for the night, only to end up suffering herself.

"Move over, make some space!"

Feng Jin walked to the bedside and kicked Ling Mohan, signaling for him to move further inside.

When she slept alone, she felt the bed was quite large. Now that Ling Mohan was on it, she felt it was incredibly cramped, and she was even considering whether she should get a bigger bed made.

Ling Mohan quickly shifted his body inwards, making space where he had just been lying. "I've warmed it up for you."

"Thank you!" Feng Jin spat out the words almost through gritted teeth, utterly speechless at Ling Mohan's behavior.

If she had a choice, she truly wished Ling Mohan would disappear from her sight immediately and stop loitering around and being an eyesore.

"What's there to thank? As long as it's for you..."

"Shut up! Stop saying those disgusting things!"

Her brain reacted instantly, and Feng Jin quickly shouted at Ling Mohan, telling him to shut his mouth and stop saying those sickening and annoying things.

She wondered where Ling Mohan learned all these disgusting phrases from. They were now completely out of control, and he would utter a few of them every other day to nauseate her.

She had only enjoyed two days of peace, and now it seemed her good days were numbered.
