Chapter 269: Chapter 269: Packing Food Chapter 269: Chapter 269: Packing Food “Sure!” Xuexue replied.
“Xiao Wu, take Miss Mo up to the elegant seat on the second floor, and take good care of her,” Shopkeeper Fan instructed another young waiter.
“Don’t worry, Shopkeeper,” Xiao Wu quickly agreed. He stepped toward Xuexue and smiled pleasingly, “Miss Mo, please follow me.” After saying this, he led the way.
In fact, Xuexue had visited Xiaohe Restaurant many times and was already quite familiar with the place. However, she couldn’t refuse Shopkeeper Fan’s excessive hospitality, as he insisted on having waiters lead the way each time.
As soon as she sat down, several other waiters brought a table full of snacks and hot tea—Peach Blossom Pastries, Osmanthus Cakes, Mandarin Duck Cakes, Almond Cakes—every famous snack from the restaurant was present.
“Why did you bring up so much? I can’t finish all this by myself,” Xuexue said, half amused, half frustrated.
“Miss Mo, these are all per the Shopkeeper’s instructions; we are just following orders,” the waiters said sheepishly, thinking to themselves that the Shopkeeper was too subservient. “Seriously, Miss Mo is just a little girl with such a small stomach; how can she eat so much? It’s simply a waste of good food.”
Having tasted a piece from each plate, Xuexue found them truly delightful, each with its own season and flavor. Thinking Chuner would definitely like these exquisite and tasty snacks, she smiled and said to two nearby waiters, “Please help me package all these snacks. I want to take them home.”
“Huh?”
The two waiters thought they had misheard and moved closer to Xuexue, staring at her with wide eyes, asking puzzledly, “Miss Mo, what did you just say?”
Observing their confused expressions, Xuexue understood that people nowadays, in order to show off their wealth, generally did not take leftovers home from restaurants. Only a minority who did were ridiculed by acquaintances for being petty. Naturally, those who could afford to dine at such restaurants were not usually of poor means.
“I said I want to pack these up to take home.” Xuexue said clearly, looking into their eyes, not caring at all about others’ opinions in her second chance at life.
“Yes, yes.”
Now that they had heard clearly, the two waiters nodded continuously, turned around to grab paper bags and started packing the snacks, thinking to themselves how odd Miss Mo was. She could have simply asked the Shopkeeper directly for as many snacks as she wanted, yet she chose to take these leftovers. Nonetheless, since Xuexue was Shopkeeper Fan’s ‘God of Wealth,’ they dared not disobey her words.
While the waiters were packing the snacks, Shopkeeper Fan had finished counting the eels and garlic sprouts and brought up the silver note. Seeing the waiters packing the snacks in front of Xuexue, he didn’t hesitate to rap each of their heads, scolding, “What are you doing? Miss Mo hasn’t finished yet!”
The two waiters touched their heads, feeling very wronged, “Shopkeeper, it was Miss Mo who asked us to help her pack them. Even with a water vat’s worth of courage, we wouldn’t dare to pack the food before Miss Mo left.”
The waiters in the restaurant usually came from poor families. Sometimes, when clients left food on their plates, they fancied it and would pack it to take home to add some meat to their family’s diet. Shopkeeper Fan knew about this and thought it a waste to throw away the leftovers, so he allowed them to take food home.
“Exactly, Shopkeeper Fan, don’t blame them. It was my request to pack them,” Xuexue said with a smile.
