Chapter 543: Chapter 543: Nong Family’s Wife Chapter 543: Chapter 543: Nong Family’s Wife Xuexue came back from the town by ox cart as the sun had already set.
Mo Xiaoqiang and Madam Xie sat in the courtyard waiting for her all day.
Any rustling sound outside the door made them stretch their necks eagerly, hoping for Xuexue to appear soon, and they had unconsciously come to see her as their pillar.
There was a faint sound of footsteps outside the door.
“Could it be Xuexue returning?” Madam Xie stretched her neck to look.
“Mother, Mother.”
Chuner and Xiao Gougou came bounding in happily.
Madam Xie was clearly disappointed and said listlessly, “Chuner, be good and go play outside with Xiao Gougou.”
“Mother, Xiao Gougou and I came back to get some watermelon to eat.” It seemed Chuner was hungry from playing outside and came back looking for something to eat.
“There’s some in the kitchen, help yourself.”
“Okay!”
With her consent, Chuner and Xiao Gougou hand in hand, skipped toward the kitchen.
Madam Xie again stared anxiously towards the main door.
Looking up at the sky, Mo Xiaoqiang, noticing the sun had set, comforted her, “Wife, don’t worry too much. It’s getting late, and Xuexue should be back soon.”
Just then, there was another disturbance outside the door.
After a few cycles of hope and disappointment, this time, Madam Xie was much calmer, yet her eyes were still fixed intently on the main entrance.
When Xuexue entered, this was the scene she saw.
Mo Xiaoqiang and Madam Xie were sitting like statues, both staring at her with wide eyes.
“Dad, Mom, what’s wrong with you both? Why are you looking at me like that?” Xuexue set down the basket she was carrying, which contained pork and two roasted chickens she had bought from the town.
Chuner was particularly fond of roasted chicken and always seemed eager to devour even the bones, so Xuexue had deliberately bought two, allowing her to eat her fill at once.
“Xuexue, you’re finally back?” Madam Xie got up anxiously, but having sat too long, her legs had gone numb and she fell to the ground.
Mo Xiaoqiang hurried over to help her up.
“Mother, why weren’t you more careful?” Xuexue rushed over to check on her.
“It’s nothing, I just sat here waiting for you for too long and my legs got numb. I’ll be fine after a rest,” Mo Xiaoqiang said, massaging Madam Xie’s legs while turning to Xuexue.
Xuexue was baffled, “Wait for me? What’s going on? You both sat motionless in the yard until your legs went numb without even feeling it?”
Anxious, Madam Xie, not minding her numb feet, struggled to her feet and said hurriedly to Xuexue, “Xuexue, a big trouble has happened to our family.”
It was no wonder Madam Xie was agitated, being a farmer’s wife, she knew the importance of the fields, always fearing that if their two-acre lifeline were taken by Old Lady Mo, their family would be left to face the harsh wind.
Pushing her back into her seat, Xuexue reassured her, “Mother, don’t panic, tell me slowly.”
“It’s like this.” Mo Xiaoqiang took over the discussion, recounting the day’s events to her.
Listening, Xuexue’s face darkened with anger. That damn Old Lady Mo really thought she was a pushover to be trifled with, but she was mistaken. She wasn’t the submissive Xuexue of before, to be manipulated by others.
“Dad, Mother, don’t worry, I’ll go to the Village Chief’s House.”
Having said that, Xuexue bent down to take out one of the roasted chickens from the basket, planning to give it to the village head, as it wasn’t appropriate to ask for favors empty-handed.
Upon hearing this, Mo Xiaoqiang’s eyes lit up and he nodded vigorously, “Yes, yes, yes, how could I forget about the village head? This matter indeed needs his intervention.”
Madam Xie also agreed, “Exactly, exactly, we were too panicked and forgot about the village head.”
