Chapter 162: Arrested
On the seaside street, many passersby cried out in alarm and stepped back.
Pedro had just killed a man who had shouted at him right out in public, twisting the man’s head several times, the sight was undoubtedly terrifying, and the faces of many nearby onlookers instantly changed.
Yet Pedro, along with Alistair and Helen beside him, remained unconcerned, feeling considerably better instead. The bearded man’s words had truly enraged them earlier; they’d never encountered someone with such an aggressively foul mouth.
"This is the price of arrogance," Alistair murmured.
"Andre!"
Shouts rang out as three figures emerged from the crowd, rushing toward the dead bearded man with expressions of utter disbelief.
Their arrival drew the attention of many spectators.
"You... you actually killed someone in broad daylight? Unbelievable!"
"How cruel! You’re not even human!"
"You’re nothing but beasts!"
One after another, the three spoke, glaring at the trio with intense fury.
The brief calm that Alistair and the others had regained instantly soured again.
Pedro coldly said, "Are you comrades of this fellow? Judging by your words, you’re just as deserving of death. If that’s the case..."
Before Pedro could finish speaking, the three unexpectedly attacked first.
All three were apprentices, simultaneously targeting Alistair, Helen, and Pedro, clearly intent on avenging their fallen comrade.
Pedro couldn’t help but sneer, was it because the level difference was too great that these fools didn’t even realize he was a Resonator?
He raised his hand, effortlessly catching the blade aimed at him, rendering it completely immobile.
Then, with a powerful kick, he sent the man who dared strike him flying.
Mid-air, the man spat blood, collapsing lifelessly to the ground, already devoid of breath.
As for the other two, one attacked Helen, the other targeted Alistair.
But Alistair made no move to defend himself.
"Truly a group that doesn’t know life from death," Helen muttered.
As she spoke, a strange ripple spread outward. Instantly, both charging men shuddered, then began bleeding from their seven orifices before collapsing helplessly to the ground, dying without even knowing how.
...
In the distance, Carlotta silently observed the scene.
"Pedro Carlisle, early tier Resonator. Helen Carlisle, also an early tier Resonator."
Carlotta assessed the situation. Alistair hadn’t even fought yet, but she had further preparations ready. This wasn’t a concern.
Amelia added, "Pedro practices the Eagle Flight Knight Path, fierce, aggressive, swift, possessing the momentum of an eagle striking across the sky. Helen practices Dream Magic, capable of silently plunging others into dreams, making reality and illusion indistinguishable."
Carlotta pondered.
She had encountered Dream Magic before, used by Mary, the attendant serving as tutor to Soren. She’d even clashed with it before. From memory, it truly was an extremely troublesome ability.
Amelia continued, "As for Alistair, he also practices the Eagle Flight Knight Path. Within the Carlisle family, many choose this technique because it’s genuinely well-rounded and extremely convenient to use."
Carlotta understood. She then turned her gaze to the street, where soldiers of the Farrel Kingdom’s garrison were arriving.
Swan port was a port city of the Farrel Kingdom. It was natural for garrison forces to be stationed here. With a murder occurring in public, they didn’t even need the city guard, the military garrison would arrive immediately.
Of course, this was because Carlotta had already arranged for someone to send word ahead. Otherwise, these garrison troops wouldn’t have arrived so swiftly.
...
"Surround them!"
At the command, many soldiers of the Farrel garrison surged forward, enclosing Alistair and his companions.
This situation caused Alistair and the others to frown again.
"How dare you commit violence in broad daylight! Do you know where you are? Swan port is a legitimate city of the Farrel Kingdom, how dare you trample its laws and dignity so recklessly?"
From within the garrison, a commanding officer stepped forward, glaring at the three with hostility.
He strode forward, intent on arresting them, when someone in the crowd suddenly called out:
"These three... they seem to be Resonators. All dangerous individuals."
The officer, still only a Listener, immediately halted and stepped back. He then ordered one of his subordinates to leave. If all three truly were Resonators, it was clearly beyond his capacity to handle.
Alistair stepped forward, coldly declaring, "Move aside."
The garrison commander’s face stiffened. The middle-aged man hadn’t expected Alistair and his companions to be so brazen, showing no regard for him or his men.
He stated firmly, "You committed murder in public. We can’t pretend nothing happened."
"They provoked us first," Alistair replied indifferently.
"That still doesn’t justify killing people in the street!" the commander retorted.
If he weren’t afraid of being outmatched, he’d have seized them already. For now, all he could do was stall for time.
Alistair impatiently said, "We are nobles of the Wendell Empire, people you cannot afford to offend. Have some sense and step aside."
The garrison commander, gathering his courage, replied, "Even if you’re nobles of the Wendell Empire, you can’t just do as you please. Besides, what connection does your Wendell Empire have with our Sun Moon Federation? Your nobility isn’t ours."
The commander had to admit, he was showing some backbone.
Of course, the reason he could be so bold was that the Kingdom’s military presence in Swann port was currently far greater than usual.
First, the complete annihilation of Shepard, key figure of the Marquis family, and his entire army had prompted widespread searches by numerous military units.
Then came the General Soul Reaper, who marched southward all the way to Swan Sea, causing many powerful figures of the Farrel Kingdom to converge upon Swan port.
At this moment, the commander had already sent someone to summon those stronger individuals, so he had at least a little confidence in his heart.
Yet Alistair found the commander incredibly ignorant. He’d already revealed their origins, how dare this lowly officer still act so defiant?
"We are members of the Carlisle family," Alistair coldly declared.
The Carlisle family was truly no simple family. The title of Viscount was insufficient to describe the Carlisle family’s strength.
In fact, just from the Carlisle family being able to continuously send out numerous Resonators, one could understand just how powerful this family really was.
There had always been rumors in the Wendell Empire, saying that families like the Carlisle family and the Fenwick family were too powerful, so the Emperor deliberately suppressed them, allowing them to remain only as Viscount families and forbidding them from advancing any further.
The commander of the garrison army opened his mouth in confusion: "The Carlisle family? Never heard of them."
The Farrel Kingdom was simply too far from the Wendell Empire, and this garrison commander wasn’t particularly fond of keeping up with foreign affairs. Not only could he not name all the prominent nobles from the neighboring Brandon Kingdom, let alone those from the Wendell Empire.
But in Alistair’s eyes, this was nothing short of an insult, "Looking down on our Carlisle family now? A mere commander, yet your audacity is impressive, daring to disrespect us."
Magic power surged from Alistair’s body, as if he was about to attack. Laws of the Farrel Kingdom meant nothing to him, nor did the Farrel Kingdom’s military force.
...
In the distance.
Carlotta softly said: "The results are already evident. The plan was very successful."
"But we won’t be able to act now."
Amelia looked somewhat helpless. "Alistair has actually become a Middle tier Resonator."
Yes, a Middle tier Resonator.
During the pursuit, Alistair had somehow gained some benefit, allowing his rank to break through.
Carlotta also felt a bit troubled. With a Middle tier Resonator present, she was completely at a loss. Would their previously conceived counterattack vanish into nothingness?
She felt, really wanting to teach those who had relentlessly pursued them a lesson. But was there still an opportunity to strike?
Just as she was pondering, suddenly something happened over there, causing an unusual expression to appear in Carlotta’s eyes.
...
Alistair had actually wanted to attack the garrison commander, but in the end, he couldn’t do it. Because very quickly, powerful figures from the Farrel Kingdom flew over, appearing in the air.
It was a middle-aged man with scars on his face, carrying a slightly fierce appearance, who landed directly in front of Alistair.
"Portland Shepard."
After landing, the man immediately introduced himself by name, instantly causing many people around to gasp in surprise.
In the Farrel Kingdom, the Shepard family was no ordinary noble family, they were hailed as the number one family in the Farrel Kingdom. Anyone from this family, no matter where they went in the kingdom, would be treated like a star surrounded by admirers.
Unlike the garrison commander who had never heard of the Carlisle family, Alistair knew of the Shepard family.
He frowned slightly and retracted his magic power fluctuations, saying, "Alistair Carlisle."
After stating his name, he especially emphasized the surname Carlisle, indicating he was from the Carlisle family of the Wendell Empire.
Upon hearing this, Portland Shepard’s expression changed slightly, clearly indicating he had heard of this family.
Still, he sternly said, "Even if you’re from the Carlisle family, you can’t just kill people in broad daylight, can you?"
Earlier, when someone notified him of the incident, they had mentioned what had happened here.
Alistair reiterated, "These people were extremely impolite, spouting obscenities. I think killing them was justified, and there’s no need to dwell on it too much."
"Typical of someone from the Carlisle family, abroad in a foreign land, yet still thinking it’s perfectly acceptable to kill at will. Truly fearless of anything."
Portland snorted.
Alistair smiled slightly, "Then what does Sir suggest we do? Are you planning to arrest all three of us Resonators?"
Helen and Pedro stepped forward, their gazes extremely cold.
With exceptional backgrounds and strength, they didn’t care much for secular laws and rules, placing themselves at the center of everything.
In fact, Portland was exactly the same type of person.
He coldly said, "Regardless, you three are suspicious individuals. Come with me for a bit. This isn’t arresting you, it’s merely asking you to cooperate with an investigation."
Alistair said, "What’s left to investigate? We just killed a few insignificant people. Are you really going to keep bothering me about this?"
"Just cooperate a little. It’ll be beneficial for both of us."
Portland’s eyes carried a hint of suspicion.
In truth, he didn’t particularly care about the few dead people. The reason he wanted to investigate Alistair and the others was because he suspected they were involved in Shepard’s death.
Shepard was a Resonator, so whoever killed him must also have been a Resonator. And coincidentally, there were three foreign Resonators...
Although, according to previous investigative reports, the two girls who purchased the Life Source at the auction house were the most suspicious, that was still only speculation. Who knew what the real truth was?
Perhaps the truth lay with these three Resonators right before his eyes?
The more Portland thought about it, the more suspicious these three individuals seemed.
"What do you mean by that?"
Alistair grew somewhat displeased.
"Just cooperate with the investigation. Why is it such a difficult thing for you? Do you think this might expose something you shouldn’t reveal?"
Portland spoke with obvious implication.
"I’m starting to not understand what you’re saying. You’re not deliberately looking for trouble with us, are you?"
Alistair’s tone turned slightly hostile.
"Do I have any reason to deliberately cause you trouble? In any case, please cooperate."
"What if we refuse to cooperate?"
"Refuse? This is the Farrel Kingdom, the Sun Moon Federation, not your Wendell Empire!"
Portland wasn’t intimidated at all.
Next, several more figures flew down from the sky, powerful individuals from the Farrel Kingdom stationed in Swan Port, drawn by the presence of the General Soul Reaper.
Now, with several people landing together, the expressions of Alistair and his companions changed slightly.
"Just cooperate with the investigation. If there’s no issue, we’ll let you go. But if you still resist, we’ll have no choice but to use force."
Portland said calmly.
Alistair and the others were very dissatisfied, but this was indeed Farrel Kingdom territory, and they were only three people. Even if they were dissatisfied, they couldn’t fight back.
"Fine, I’ll cooperate and see what exactly you want to investigate."
Alistair snorted.
...
Carlotta watched the scene in the distance with a strange expression.
She noticed powerful figures from the Farrel Kingdom continuously appearing, and then surprisingly, they actually took away Alistair and the others.
This was truly... truly unexpected.
