Amidst the roar of the aircraft, countless zombies trampled over the bodies and heads of those in front of them, relentlessly climbing towards the building where Xu An and the others were.
Zhou Haimei was stunned by the scene before her. While pulling Xu An and sprinting, she shouted, "We only dropped one drop, right? Why are there so many zombies?"
Before Zhou Haimei could speak, Xu An grabbed her arm and pulled her towards her.
"Ah—"
A scream was heard.
Zhou Haimei felt a gust of wind brush past her ear.
Immediately after, a soldier, who had inexplicably turned into a zombie, lunged towards Zhou Haimei from behind with his mouth agape.
They could no longer afford to care about anything else.
They desperately lunged towards the helicopter in front of them.
For a mere few dozen meters, Xu An had never felt such a long distance.
The only fortunate thing was that she had arranged for her mother to take Yueyue onto the plane in advance, and they were the ones who had been delayed until now.
As they ran, Xu An watched as the soldiers who were intensely resisting the zombies a moment ago, became part of the zombie army the next second.
Their mouths were wide open.
Their jaw muscles were completely torn, revealing blood-stained teeth. Looking at them head-on, one could even see the dark voids of their throats in their gaping mouths.
Xu An swiftly dealt with the zombies around her with a flick of her wrist.
"You guys go first!"
Just as Xu An felt the pressure suddenly decrease, Qin Chuan's voice came from behind.
"You take Zhou Haimei and go first. I'll cover the rear."
Xu An wanted to say, "It's just a few steps, why do we need to cover the rear? Can't we just retreat together?"
But upon seeing the zombies with their mouths agape, howling behind them, Xu An realized she had underestimated the potency of that serum.
Weighing the pros and cons, Xu An could only watch as Qin Chuan charged into the zombie horde.
She didn't waste the time Qin Chuan bought them, grabbing Zhou Haimei and sprinting towards the plane with all her might.
She was still trembling with lingering fear even after boarding the plane.
Yueyue was still sound asleep in Xu Yan's arms.
Yet, even now, Yueyue showed no signs of turning into a zombie.
Zhou Haimei drew her long saber and with a swift motion, severed the heads of two zombies.
"Where's Qin Chuan?"
"Yeah, where's our captain?"
Beside them, two young people, barely in their early twenties, held their guns, continuously firing at the zombies and asking Xu An.
Xu An was about to say that Qin Chuan was still below.
Then, she heard the cheers of the young soldiers, "It's the captain! It's Captain Qin Chuan, he's back."
As Xu An turned her head, her gaze directly met Qin Chuan's eyes.
In an instant, Qin Chuan cut down the zombies surrounding them and ran towards the plane.
Shortly after they left, the entire top floor was overrun by zombies.
The tents and backpacks that Xu An and the others had not had time to take were torn to shreds by the zombies.
"What a shame about those things."
Xu An patted Zhou Haimei's shoulder nonchalantly.
She had plenty in her spatial storage, so she didn't feel it was a great loss.
Qin Chuan on the other side looked utterly exhausted.
Xu An walked to the back of the cabin to check on Yueyue's condition.
"Her face is still a little red, but her fever has broken. An'an, what exactly is wrong with Yueyue? She doesn't look like she was scratched by a zombie."
Even Xu An hesitated. She knew her mother wanted to persuade her not to tell Qin Chuan or any of the investigators about Yueyue's condition.
However, seeing Yueyue safe and sound all the way, her once firm resolve began to waver.
She found it increasingly difficult to refuse her mother.
"I feel Yueyue's symptoms are a bit strange. It's somewhat similar to what happens when antibodies activate in the body during vaccination."
Zhou Haimei's voice came from behind. At some point, Zhou Haimei had followed Xu An's steps to the back cabin.
Xu An turned to look at Zhou Haimei.
"Actually, I'm not entirely sure myself. Yueyue seems to have passed the critical stage, but for some reason, the child is still running a fever."
"Could she have caught a bad cold?"
"But the abrasion on the back of her head definitely has necrotic tissue, there's no doubt about that."
Both women fell into thought, pondering what exactly Yueyue's current symptoms were.
"Do you think Yueyue's dad might have already given her that antibody thing?"
Xu An looked up at Zhou Haimei, "But didn't that person say that the one vaccine he had was the last one?"
Zhou Haimei had thought the same thing at first, but after witnessing Yueyue's abnormality, she had to question it.
A parent's love for their child is profound and far-reaching.
"Do you remember what that person said before he left? If his daughter ever got into trouble, he hoped we would use this vaccine to save his daughter."
"I remember, but there's nothing odd about that statement."
Xu An shook her head, "No, there is. That man said it had to be injected within half an hour of being bitten by a zombie. If she didn't turn into a zombie after half an hour, then there was no need for the injection."
"Is there something wrong with that statement?"
"The man's voice was very low, but he added a sentence at the very end."
"He said, if nothing happened after half an hour, then it was a success."
"We were in a hurry to find people then, so I didn't pay much attention to it. Not until just now, seeing Yueyue still with a fever, did I suddenly remember it."
"So you suspect Yueyue?"
Xu An shook her head, "I don't suspect Yueyue. She's just a child, what could she do? What I suspect is that man. Who, in your opinion, is the real vaccine?"
As soon as she said this, Zhou Haimei's eyes widened.
"What do you mean? Are you suspecting that Yueyue is the real vaccine?"
Xu An glanced at Zhou Haimei, who immediately understood and stopped discussing the topic.
However, this thought caused a huge stir between them.
If this were true, regardless of whether the antibody Xu An gave to Qin Chuan was genuine or not,
Yueyue would be in great danger.
The three of them were lost in their thoughts.
"Xu An, since you're all here, let me introduce you."
Qin Chuan said, bringing the middle-aged man from earlier over.
"This is Dr. Ling, who is in charge of the research on this vaccine and antibody. Dr. Ling, this is Xu An, whom I told you about. She's the one who gave me the vaccine."
Dr. Ling smiled, "As expected, a young and promising young lady, brave and resourceful."
Xu An politely shook his hand. She merely offered a simple smile in response to his praise.
She didn't feel that being called brave and resourceful at such a time was something to be happy about.
It felt more like words spoken to a cannon fodder character on the verge of being eliminated.
