Chapter 380: Secrets revealed (2)
A place guard came forward to grab Quinn and take him away.
Edgar watched as Quinn walked away, grinning like a fool.
"He’s a strange one," Tobias said, finally understanding there was so much interest in the two brothers. "I still cannot believe he killed his brother. The court will say he had good reason to, and I fear he will cause trouble for you if I hold him for too long."
Rafael returned to his friends’ side and watched Quinn be held captive. "We need to kill him," he said.
"I second that," Edgar agreed.
"I agree with you both, but he is right. This is his land, and his brother became a wanted man from the moment we left the palace. We need to find something else here to hold him longer," Tobias said, hopeful that a search would reveal secrets.
"You’re not going to find anything here. He’s letting us wander into his home too easily. Either he has a trap, or there’s nothing here. I believe it is the latter since he would have to be more insane than I thought to kill his brother and still have a trap," Edgar concluded.
"So, what do I do? If I keep him, I’m going to have to hear from all the friends you said he made. Like he pointed out, the others will complain about you. Clear your dungeon," Tobias advised Edgar.
"It doesn’t have anyone. You could hold him and ask how he is tied to William Lancaster," Edgar said, his gaze fixed on Quinn.
Only now did it click that Edgar had seen the resemblance, which was right in his face all along.
Tobias frowned, caught off guard by the name he hadn’t heard in a long time. "William? I thought we got rid of everyone close to William? All the servants we found went back to their families. There were only two ladies there."
"It seems not all of them went back. William is the only one who had a fascination with Alessandra’s mask and thought of her as art. I should have realised it when Alessandra spoke of her interaction with Quinn," Edgar said, annoyed he missed it.
Edgar had too many other things on his mind at the time, and he had not thought about William since he killed him.
"Still, I’ve never heard of William having more family. When he died, everyone distanced themselves from his name. Somehow, he has a son to show up in Lockwood. No, two sons," Tobias said, trying to wrap his head around this.
Edgar looked away from Quinn for a moment to get a look at Cassius.
"I might be wrong, but I was told they didn’t share the same father. If William is his father, it ends the mystery about their mother. The Monroes once had a daughter, and in William’s home was a painting of a woman resembling her. It was concluded she had died," said Edgar.
Edgar recalled that those who were rescued from William’s home didn’t say much. They were traumatised, so the court didn’t push them to share their stories.
Back then, Edgar had little interest in the matter since it happened at the same time as Grant’s death, and not long after, he began to suspect Simon.
"There weren’t any children in William’s home."
"That isn’t true. There was a boy when I was there. I might have told him to flee, so by the time the town guards arrived, many of the servants had left. I’m certain that’s his son," Edgar said, standing by his findings.
Rafael didn’t recall who William was, but none of that mattered to him.
"William never married, but he would have wanted an heir like everyone else. It seems he left behind a little twisted monster. We need to find out how old he is," Edgar said, staring at Quinn, who smiled.
It wasn’t known that Edgar was the one to kill Willian. If Quinn knew, he had to be there that night.
"He said his mother died. Why didn’t she return to the Monroes? I need to have a word with that family," Tobias said, parting from Edgar to get a guard.
"I know that look. You’ll need to remind me who William is again," Rafael said as he neared Edgar.
"He’s the one Alessandra’s father wanted to send her off to. His only interest in her was to keep her in his home as art. I killed him, but he left something behind to disturb us years later," Edgar explained.
Edgar thought of having to tell Alessandra that William had a son. Speaking of William alone was going to bring back bad memories.
William’s interest in Alessandra played a big role in why Edgar killed Alessandra’s father.
"You’re not going to let him live, are you?" Rafael asked, predicting Edgar’s plans.
"Not at all. The court is going to let him out, and when it does, we’re going to go for him. This is justice the court can’t give you. We’ll get him for Rue and for all the other trouble he has caused," Edgar promised Rafael.
Edgar suspected that, with the way Quinn acted, he was trying to fill his father’s shoes. Anyone who tried to act like William was not a good man or woman.
Tobias returned to his friends’ side and said, "I sent a guard to gather the Monroes. Perhaps they knew he was related to them or where his mother had been all this time."
"I knew they had trouble, but I didn’t want to believe that they sent her off to William. They never reported her missing because they knew where she was, and even after William died, they didn’t ask about her. You have to be a monster to put your daughter in his hands," said Tobias.
Edgar looked down, having a theory. "What if the killer isn’t just mimicking Simon? The punishments and the way the bodies are placed to be found are like Simon, but Simon went after women he thought played a role, and he wanted them to keep it up. Women, he enjoyed breaking to see the real side of them."
Edgar continued, "The new victims all came from families facing financial hardships, and the families aren’t reporting them missing."
"Some of the families disappeared from Lockwood when no one was looking, and there is the theory that some were killed," Tobias said, remembering the details.
"It might be a mix of Simon and William’s interests. Desmond once owed William, and Alessandra was going to be given to him to help with the debt. I could be wrong, but it’s the only person we could point to," Edgar said, placing Quinn as a suspect.
"Unfortunately for him, the attack on Rue and then killing his brother gives us good reason to suspect him. Is it just me, or is he smiling like this is still a game to him? I thought you said Cassius was the one you were keeping an eye on?" Tobias asked, turning to Edgar.
"I thought that at first, but his brother is the real mastermind. He’s smiling because we don’t have any proof. I still don’t believe we’ll find anything here. We need to go to William’s home," Edgar said, hopeful that something useful would be there.
