Chapter 413: No Going Back

Wen Nuan’s suggestion of divorce caused a huge stir in the Wen family. Everyone was against it, especially her mother. She thought of Ye Feimo as a wonderful son-in-law. Aside from the accident and the miscarriage, he was a very honest man who cared deeply for Wen Nuan and her family.

Wen Nuan’s father usually didn’t get involved in his daughters’ matters, but marriage was a serious thing. He couldn’t just let them get a divorce, especially when they had only been married for a year. Wen Nuan’s parents took turns talking to her, trying to convince her to stay with Ye Feimo. They both thought that the miscarriage and her disappointment in Ye Feimo were the reasons she wanted to get a divorce.

No matter what her parents said, Wen Nuan listened carefully, but she never changed her mind.

Ye Feimo came to see Wen Nuan as usual. Her parents could see that he truly loved her, and with his personality, there was no way he would let her go. They believed that the divorce was a rash decision on Wen Nuan’s part and that there was still hope, so they didn’t say anything to Ye Feimo.

Wen Jing was even more tight-lipped.

Wen Nuan’s twenty-first birthday was a gloomy one. She wasn’t in the mood to celebrate and had even forgotten about it herself, but her parents hadn’t. They had wanted to throw her a party, but since she wasn’t in the mood, they decided against it.

This was the quietest birthday Wen Nuan had ever had.

Tang Mandong, Gao Chunmiao, Cai Xiaojing, Chen Xueru, and others sent her text messages with birthday wishes. Wen Nuan replied to all of them.

She looked at the phone charm on her nightstand. It was probably the birthday gift Ye Feimo had planned to give her, but he gave it to her early. Wen Nuan picked up the charm and smiled slightly. She truly couldn’t bear to let it go.

But no matter how hard it was, she had to let it go.

Ye Feimo knocked on the door. Wen Nuan turned around. She knew he would come over today, no matter how busy he was.

"Happy birthday," Ye Feimo said softly, with a hint of a smile in his eyes.

"Thank you," Wen Nuan replied.

She didn’t like Ye Feimo’s attitude, which was almost like he was atoning for his sins. He was careful around her, giving in to her every whim, as if he was afraid of upsetting her. It was a terrible feeling.

She preferred the carefree Ye Feimo from before.

"Do you like the phone charm?"

"It’s very pretty," Wen Nuan said, putting the charm down. He must have seen her holding it.

"Do you want to go out for dinner?"

Wen Nuan shook her head, wanting to say something, but holding back. Ye Feimo walked over. At first, he didn’t dare to touch her, but when he took her hand and she didn’t pull away, he felt a sense of relief. "Wen Nuan, come home. Please?"

Wen Nuan kept her head down and didn’t say anything. Her fingers trembled slightly. As if she had thought of something, she quickly pulled her hand away. Ye Feimo’s hand was left empty, and he looked at her in a daze.

"You still can’t forgive me?"

Wen Nuan took a deep breath and suddenly smiled. "I met you on my birthday last year. Time really flies. A year has passed in a blink of an eye."

Ye Feimo looked at her. Wen Nuan suddenly said, "Let’s go for a walk downstairs. I have something to say to you."

"Can’t you say it up here?" Ye Feimo asked in a low voice. He was very reluctant to go outside with Wen Nuan. It was as if his world would immediately turn black and white the moment they walked out that door.

Wen Nuan said, "The air is nice tonight. Let’s go for a walk."

Wen Nuan’s parents were overjoyed to see the two of them walk out together. Her mother said, "The storm has finally passed. I hope Wen Nuan and Feimo will make up quickly."

Wen Nuan and Ye Feimo walked under the moonlight. The moon was beautiful tonight, but there were no stars. The sky in A City was always foggy, so it was rare to see such a clear night sky.

The flowers on both sides of the path were in full bloom. A gentle breeze blew. Wen Nuan walked along the path, with Ye Feimo right behind her.

The more she was silent, the more Ye Feimo had a bad feeling that something was about to happen. He refused to think about that possibility. He felt like a prisoner waiting to be sentenced, waiting helplessly for the judge’s verdict.

As long as Wen Nuan didn’t mention a divorce, he was willing to talk about anything.

Whatever she wanted, he would give it to her without hesitation.

He just wanted her to stay.

"Feimo, if I said I really didn’t know anything about that night and didn’t do anything with Brother Liucheng, would you believe me?" Wen Nuan suddenly asked. She was still walking and didn’t look back at him.

"Yes, I would."

Wen Nuan gave a light laugh. Trust was simple to say, but so difficult to do.

Ye Feimo walked past Wen Nuan and grabbed her shoulders. Under the moonlight, her face looked translucent. "Wen Nuan, can we just forget about the past? Let’s start over."

Forget it? Feimo, can you forget it? You will always have a demon in your heart. You will never forget.

They would never have the chance to start over.

"Feimo, we both know that some things, once they’ve happened, can never be erased. It’s not something you can just say you’ll forget. It’s impossible. I remember every single little thing that happened this past year. It was the most wonderful year of my life, and I’m very grateful to you," Wen Nuan said calmly, as if she was lost in thought. "I was truly happy this year."

The more Ye Feimo listened, the more he didn’t want to.

Wen Nuan looked at him. "You have your inner demons, and I have my dreams. Since neither of us can overcome them, forcing ourselves to stay together will only bring us more pain. I used to think I could handle it, but I was so wrong. This kind of marriage would suffocate us. You’re tired, and I’m tired. Let’s take some time apart."

Ye Feimo’s face was expressionless. "You still blame me?"

"Yes, I do," Wen Nuan said honestly, nodding. "I wish I could blame you for everything and just wash my hands of it. But I know I was also at fault, so I can’t blame you entirely."

Ye Feimo tried to find something in Wen Nuan’s calm eyes, but there was nothing there.

Wen Nuan said softly, "Feimo, let go."

"Never!" Ye Feimo said with determination. His expression was grim, filled with a wild stubbornness. "Not unless I’m dead."

Wen Nuan’s body shuddered. *Dead...*

That was the word she was most afraid of hearing now.

She closed her eyes in pain and pushed Ye Feimo’s hand away with a hardened heart. When she opened them again, they were filled with a sharp coldness. "I don’t want us to end up hating each other."
