Chapter 306: On the spot

Chapter 306: On the spot

Had it not been for the threats pronounced by the Lady, Edna would have already leapt high enough to touch the sky.

Her goal being the death of Katherine to delay Arabella’s and Silas’ union, never in a million years did she hope that things would work that much in her favor.

Arabella! The Arabella that stood in her way was finally gone!

Not only that, but she took Katherine down with her as there was no way back for Katherine after what she had done.

The blonde would count the days or weeks for Silas to recover before resuming their old dynamic.

Surely, she’d go back to being his blood provider. No other soul under that roof owned as clean a blood as hers after that wench.

Silas was a vampire and since they were near immortal creatures they did not hold on to detrimental feelings for very long.

He’d quickly get over it and go back to who he was before Arabella.

Edna stood in front of Lady Persephone’s door by the time dusk knocked on their side of the world.

"Come in," the Lady’s voice traveled steady and cold.

"Good evening, my Lady. I came first thing here just as you’ve requested,"

The blonde had barely had the time to finish her sentence that Persephone wiped the smirk off her face at once, "Where did you go the night before after separating from the rest of the maids?"

"I... Went to the maids’ quarters as I have already stated earlier this morning...," Edna stammered.

"Why was that?" the Lady’s eyes were piercing, soldered on the blonde who fidgeted in place.

"Like I said, I was not in a festive mood and so decided to go to bed early," she kept her gaze down.

"You must have had a very good night sleep then, considering none of the screaming that was done awoke you," the vampiress raised an eyebrow.

"No, indeed, my Lady. I didn’t hear any scream at all," Edna shook her head profusely.

"Oh! You’re quite the heavy sleeper then!" Persephone stood up at once, startling the blonde who took a step backwards.

"Yes," she murmured.

The Lady slowly circled around Edna, cooling the blood in her veins by the way she hovered closer with each step.

"But I suppose by now you know everything that happened as I am aware of the speed at which information travels through these halls,"

"Yes, I heard. What happened was truly unfortunate," Edna kept her eyes down, fearing a smile would escape her control if their sight met.

"With Grace and Allegra awake, we’re bound to learn more, but with Arabella gone, you now stand to recuperate your previous spot as blood provider,"

Edna’s face lit up in an instant, finally finding the strength to look the Lady in the eyes, "I vow not to disappoint neither you nor Master Silas, my Lady,"

"You seem oddly eager," Persephone remarked.

"Please forgive me, my Lady. I never had the best control over my emotions," the blonde did her best to kill her smirk.

"Well, in any case, don’t worry about disappointing anyone," the Lady breathed in, "I said you stand to recover your spot, not that you were going to,"

"I am afraid I don’t understand," all the composure and calm Edna had kept evaporated her the second those words were uttered.

In response, Persephone made her way towards the balcony doors and faced the moon, "I hear you have your grievances with Katherine,"

"No!" her voice began escaping her control, "I do not have any grievances with Miss Katherine at all! She attacked me a few days ago due to the illness plaguing her mind!"

"Is that so?" Persephone turned to offer Edna one of the coldest glares ever given, "In that case why did you visit her in the medical wing yesterday? You were all told that no human was allowed in there,"

How would the Lady know that Edna had visited the room? But that would mean that one of the sisters wasn’t fully out of it. In that case, it could also mean that they saw her feed the potion to Katherine.

She had to be careful with her next words...

"I... Don’t think I visited her. Or at the very least, I do not remember doing so," Edna spoke fast and frantically.

That was the safest response she could have given at the time... Or so she believed.

"Is that so?" The Lady’s eyebrow rose again, "Then you must not remember making the sisters tea as well," she half asked.

"That is simply impossible!" she huffed, fists clenched, "I definitely do not remember making tea specifically for the sisters. I may have made some for myself and left it in the kitchens, but that was all!" her tone rose with her agitation.

"If so, then why add a blood flask along?"

Utterly stunned to silence the blonde was. No longer able to articulate as many thoughts raced across her bustling mind.

She aimed to grasp at one, but the Lady’s voice came again, "Besides, Allegra saw you prepare the tray,"

"That is impossible!" she almost screeched, "It was Grace who took the tray and not Allegra so she must be lying!"

As soon as those words left her mouth, her breath hitched in her throat. With both of her hands clasping her lips, Edna stood with wide open eyes while attempting to regulate her breathing.

The sinking feeling in her stomach however could not be managed.

It was too late. The Lady had been smarter than her and put her exactly where she wanted her.

She’d spilled the truth before her with very little pressure applied.

Her heart battered her chest as she awaited for the Lady’s reaction.

"Now, how would you know it was Grace that took the tray, if it weren’t you that prepared it or if you weren’t there to see who took it? Can you riddle me this one, girl?"

She was calm, but there was still thunder in her voice and lightening in her eyes as Edna shrunk under Persephone’s gaze.
