Chapter 343 - 342: Harvest

Chapter 343: Chapter 342: Harvest

Besides these, we have all the oil, salt, soy sauce, and vinegar packed neatly. A few small bottles are inside an iron box.

"Did you bring all this?"

"Yeah, these are Qin Hongbing’s stuff. That guy likes to hang around the mountains when he’s free. He’s got all the equipment."

Lin Wan thinks Han Yi’s backpack is like a treasure chest; apart from these, it contains a military blanket too. Really thoughtful.

Lin Wan, being with her husband, doesn’t have to worry about anything, as Han Yi arranges everything perfectly.

Han Yi skewered the fish on the iron sticks, sprinkled salt and pepper on them, and then brushed some oil on top. He held them over the fire and started grilling.

Lin Wan squatted beside him to watch for a while, then got up to gather some branches, filled the kettle with water from the stream, and set it on the fire to boil.

"Is the water from this stream drinkable?"

"The water’s very clean; boiling it is fine."

"How’s my grilling technique?"

"Hmm, it’s delicious. Do you guys come here often?" Lin Wan finished three fish in one sitting. They weren’t very big, less than a kilo.

Han Yi shook his head, "I’ve only come here with him twice. When I was a kid, I often sneaked away from Grandma to fish in the suburban rivers. Grandma wouldn’t let me go, but I always snuck out. When I caught fish, I’d grill and eat them outside before going back. Sometimes, when I was cheeky, I’d catch someone’s chicken, slaughter it, and grill it."

Lin Wan widened her eyes in surprise, "You used to get up to sneaky things as a kid?" She thought Han Yi was a well-behaved, upright boy both then and now.

"That was just a mischievous phase; I haven’t done that since high school." Han Yi felt embarrassed and lowered his head to extinguish the fire in front of him, "I can make beggar’s chicken. When we catch a chicken this afternoon, I’ll make it for you to try."

"Great."

After eating, Lin Wan filled two military water bottles with boiled water. After resting for a while, Han Yi took out a bow and arrows made from bamboo from his backpack.

They placed their luggage in a dirt cave and continued into the mountain with a military knife and the bow.

Lin Wan poured out the mushrooms she collected in the morning into the cave, took an empty cloth bag, and decided to gather whatever she found in the mountains to take back.

Not far in, Lin Wan found a patch of raspberries. The cloth bag was too dirty, so she picked some and put them in her pockets, eating them as she walked along. While collecting mushrooms, she found a patch of chicken droppings and thought that there might be wild chickens around.

Just as she was about to call out to Han Yi, she saw him draw his bow and hit a wild roe deer not far away.

Seeing he had hit the target, Lin Wan was even more excited than Han Yi and quickly ran over to the roe deer to take a look.

"Han Yi, it’s dead."

"Perfect, enough to last us a few meals." Han Yi weighed the roe deer in his hand, laughing.

Lin Wan pointed to the spot she discovered just earlier, "There should be wild chickens around in that area."

"Wild chickens are agile. Let’s step lightly," Han Yi put the deer aside and asked Lin Wan to watch it while he went to check the spot she pointed out. Before he got far, several wild chickens ran out from the trees.

Han Yi quickly aimed at a chicken and shot it, hitting it right in the head. The other chickens then scattered in all directions. Han Yi didn’t hesitate and shot another one.

With a roe deer and two hazel grouses, they had quite a successful haul.

Lin Wan looked around nearby and found the grouse’s nest, which still had five or six eggs inside.

Lin Wan carefully put them into her coat pockets.

There were many types of mushrooms, and Lin Wan didn’t recognize most of them. It was mostly Han Yi who told her whether or not they were edible and what kind they were.
