Yang Dawei was big and burly, with a fierce look on his face that made it clear he wasn’t someone easy to deal with.

However, the reason Luo Fei was suddenly alert wasn’t his appearance, but rather the fact that he could clearly see a sinister, fearsome, human-shaped figure looming over Yang Dawei’s head.

So this was the murderer he was supposed to find?

Luo Fei could hardly believe how smoothly this was going!

"Hey, can you cops tell me what this is all about? If it’s about that corpse from today, I suggest you start asking someone else because I don’t know anything about it."

As soon as the door was opened, Yang Dawei impatiently waved them away with both hands, clearly displeased with the interruption. Yet, when faced with the police, he appeared calm and collected, not like someone who had committed murder at all.

But the formed figure above his head made Luo Fei certain that Yang Dawei was involved in a murder case. Otherwise, the dark aura couldn’t possibly have solidified into such a sinister figure!

Was there something more to this, or was this guy really just that mentally strong?

Luo Fei pondered this, maintaining a businesslike indifference on his face, "Sorry, whether you know or not, we need to ask routine questions, so please cooperate."

Yang Dawei seemed reluctant, but stepped aside, "Such a bother, come in then."

Luo Fei turned back and exchanged a look with Wang Yong, then stepped into the low cement room.

Wang Yong, though usually not the brightest, was sharp enough when handling cases.

He knew Luo Fei must have discovered something, which was why he discreetly signaled to him. Immediately, Wang Yong switched to a vigilant and guarded stance, ready for Yang Dawei to possibly lash out.

The two entered, finding the room in disarray. Pots and pans piled in a corner, a sofa covered in dirty clothes and worn beyond recognition, two aged wooden cupboards, and several broken chairs that looked ready to collapse composed the room’s entire furniture. The cement floor was full of pits and hollows, exuding a moldy smell.

All this indicated just how lazy and impoverished the owner was.

However, Luo Fei’s gaze lingered thoughtfully on a few sexy posters plastered on the cement wall.

Yang Dawei plopped down on the sofa, "Any questions, just ask quickly. I need to go out to play cards later."

Luo Fei withdrew his gaze and chose a somewhat sturdier chair to sit on.

"You’re Yang Dawei, right? I heard from the village head that your wife ran away a few years ago. Do you know where she is now?"

Luo Fei’s casual question caused Yang Dawei’s face to darken, looking like a completely different person from the calm man just a moment ago, "How the hell would I know where that bitch went? Why are you asking this, does this have anything to do with the case you’re investigating?"

Luo Fei, who was closely watching him, didn’t miss the flash of anxiety in his eyes.

Now having a grasp of the situation, he grew more composed with his questioning.

"Just asking casually, why are you so nervous?"

"Who says I’m nervous? I’m furious! That bitch left me because I was poor, ran off with some outside man, got me wearing a green hat, officer you’re a man too, if you were in my shoes, wouldn’t you be pissed?"

"Is that so? So you haven’t tried to find her over the years?"

"Find her? She ran off without a trace, where would I find her? Besides, finding people is your job as cops. Speaking of which, I’d like to ask you, I’ve reported this for four or five years now, are you guys just slacking off, why haven’t you brought that damn woman back!"

After the small episode, Yang Dawei quickly calmed down and even began to question Luo Fei aggressively.

"Watch your mouth, behave yourself!"

Upon hearing him insult the police, Wang Yong, who was taking notes, stopped writing in anger and scolded him sharply.

"Officer, don’t get angry, I’m just anxious. But being people’s police is all about serving the people, right? You haven’t found my wife yet, can’t I complain a bit?"

"Cut the nonsense, the police aren’t here to find your wife. Besides, if she ran away it was because you were beating her. Instead of reflecting on yourself, you blame the police. Do you have any shame?"

Wang Yong despised such men the most. It’s one thing to be idle, but to also engage in domestic violence, then demand the police find his wife after driving her away with beatings, that’s just incompetence.

What, do the police owe him something? These scoundrels truly understand how to play the rogue.

Yang Dawei seemed a bit guilty being reprimanded, awkwardly facing Wang Yong, "Officer, come on, which man doesn’t hit his wife, isn’t every household like this?"

But Luo Fei still keenly caught the briefest twitch of his mouth—a quick, satisfied smile.

He stopped Wang Yong from saying anything further and spoke up, "Yang Dawei, your wife’s disappearance is a matter for the local police, not our criminal investigation team. So let’s talk about the body by the canal instead."

"Weren’t you the one who brought it up first... alright, just ask what you want."

"I want to know, have you seen the deceased before?"

"Never seen him."

"Have you noticed any strangers appearing in the village recently?"

"No."

...

After asking several questions related to the case, all of which Yang Dawei claimed ignorance of, Luo Fei saw no need to ask further.

He stood up, then pointed to the room’s only bedroom, "By the way, would you mind me having a look in your bedroom?"
