Chapter 97: Chapter 44: Pursuit, Ignorant of Life and Death (Seeking Subscriptions, Favorites, and Monthly Tickets)
Seated on the sofa in front of Luo Fei is Cheng Wei’s girlfriend, Zhao Yi.
Zhao Yi, 22 years old, a quiet and fresh-looking girl.
However, at this moment, Luo Fei looks at Zhao Yi with a serious expression, because there is a black aura above her head too, which suggests that Zhao Yi might be involved. But based on the aura’s intensity, Luo Fei suspects she isn’t an accomplice. A non-accomplice with a black aura suggests to Luo Fei that Zhao Yi knows about Cheng Wei and the others’ murder of Cheng Zhiyou and is helping them cover it up.
If that’s the case, Luo Fei thinks the chances of getting any useful information from Zhao Yi are slim.
"Zhao Yi, we’re here to learn something from you. Just tell us what you know," Luo Fei said.
"Okay," Zhao Yi nodded slightly.
"Where were you the night of the second day? Who were you with?" Luo Fei asked.
"I was with Cheng Wei the entire night. We went to the plaza to see a performance. We returned home around nine o’clock and then watched a movie before going to sleep," Zhao Yi replied calmly, without a hint of flaw.
Luo Fei wasn’t surprised by Zhao Yi’s response. Since Cheng Wei dared to use Zhao Yi as his alibi, it meant Cheng Wei was sure Zhao Yi wouldn’t say anything against him.
Luo Fei: "How long have you known Cheng Wei?"
Zhao Yi: "We’ve known each other since we were young."
Luo Fei: "What kind of person do you think Cheng Wei is?"
Zhao Yi: "Cheng Wei is very, very good to me."
Luo Fei: "Are you aware of Cheng Wei’s bad relationship with his father?"
Zhao Yi: "...Yes, I’m somewhat aware."
Luo Fei: "Do you know why Cheng Wei doesn’t get along with his father?"
Zhao Yi: "I don’t know. Cheng Wei never told me."
Luo Fei: "How long have you been together with Cheng Wei?"
Zhao Yi: "Four years."
After questioning Zhao Yi, Luo Fei and his team left.
Just as they exited the district gate, Luo Fei’s phone rang; it was a call from Sun Jun.
"Chief, I found what you asked for. Cheng Wei is close to two friends, one named Lin Gang and another named Cao Dong. Lin Gang is 181 cm tall and lives in the Guangming District, while Cao Dong is 174 cm tall and also lives in the Guangming District," Sun Jun said excitedly over the phone. Based on the footprints at the crime scene, the killer was about 180 cm tall, so Lin Gang fits the suspect profile perfectly, explaining Sun Jun’s excitement.
Luo Fei: "Alright, head to the Guangming District now. We’ll meet up at the district entrance."
After hanging up with Sun Jun, Luo Fei, Wang Yong, and Zhaocheng drove to the Sun District.
Twenty minutes later, the three arrived at the Sun District where Sun Jun was already waiting.
They parked the car.
"Chief." Sun Jun hurried over.
Luo Fei glanced at Sun Jun, then at Wang Yong and Zhaocheng beside him, he pointed at Wang Yong and said, "Wang Yong, get a suit and disguise yourself as a salesperson to snoop around the district. See if Lin Gang and Cao Dong are home. The others stay in the car and closely monitor the district entrance."
"If Lin Gang and Cao Dong are indeed the suspects, they must be on edge. A slight disturbance could send them fleeing in panic. Sun Jun, message Zhang Fan to closely monitor Cheng Wei’s movements. Report any developments immediately."
"Understood."
Wang Yong and Sun Jun nodded.
Then Wang Yong went to get clothes, and Sun Jun messaged Zhang Fan.
Less than ten minutes later, Wang Yong returned, wearing a suit and polished shoes. His hair was neatly combed, and he held a stack of flyers, fitting the image of a salesperson perfectly.
"Chief, how do I look?" Wang Yong asked.
"I finally understand why the Chief asked you to play the salesperson. You really look the part," Sun Jun laughed.
"Enough, let’s practice a bit to prevent any slip-ups later," Luo Fei said.
They rehearsed Wang Yong’s performance for approaching the door, with Luo Fei playing Lin Gang and Wang Yong the salesperson, rehearsing three to four times until confident there were no problems. Only then did Wang Yong head into the Sun District.
Luo Fei, Sun Jun, and Zhaocheng stayed in the car, keeping a close watch on the district entrance.
About fifteen minutes later
"Chief, Wang Yong is out," Sun Jun exclaimed as he saw Wang Yong walking out of the district. Luo Fei saw him immediately too.
But seeing Wang Yong’s expression, Luo Fei frowned.
Wang Yong walked over, and Luo Fei rolled down the car window.
"Chief, I went up there, but I only saw Lin Gang and Cao Dong’s family. Neither Lin Gang nor Cao Dong are married; they live with their parents. However, I did not see Lin Gang or Cao Dong. They aren’t at home," Wang Yong reported.
"Chief, do you think Lin Gang and Cao Dong fled after taking the money and committing the murder?" Sun Jun asked anxiously.
Luo Fei frowned; what Sun Jun suggested certainly wasn’t impossible.
"Alright, Wang Yong, you and Zhaocheng stay at the district entrance. If you spot Lin Gang or Cao Dong, don’t act rashly. Just keep an eye on them," Luo Fei instructed Wang Yong and Zhaocheng.
Then Luo Fei turned to Sun Jun, "Sun Jun, come with me to the bus station to check it out."
