Chapter 30 Sisters-in-Law's Struggle

The Old Su family.

Grandma Su’s eyes were almost shining with excitement as she looked at the items laid out on the kang in the main hall.

With so much food, their family’s life would finally get better.

“Third son, you’ve worked hard. This trip wasn’t in vain; we don’t have to worry about not having enough to eat anymore.”

The summer harvest hadn’t been brought in yet, and the Su family’s grain was running low.

Grandma Su had been planning the meals for the entire family, barely managing to keep everyone fed.

Today, the third son had carried back a lot of grain, and the pressure had eased considerably.

“Mom, this grain is enough for our family to eat for a few days. If we can hold on for a few days, the summer harvest will be in, and our family’s life this year will be much better,” said Old Su Third, smiling foolishly.

“You’re right. It’s all thanks to… thanks to a kind person who remembers your father’s kindness!”

Grandma Su almost said something like “thanks to the Dragon King,” but she stopped herself in time.

Before Old Su Third could reply, Grandma Su suddenly thought of an important issue.

Her expression changed immediately, and she said, “Third son, take this grain to the storeroom first. Put this piece of meat in the cellar; don’t let anyone see it. And these two bags of sugar and two pieces of cloth… forget it, I’ll handle these myself…”

Grandma Su quickly and efficiently sorted and stored all the items.

Old Su Third didn’t know why his mother was giving these instructions, but he busied himself by calling his nephews to take the items away.

Grandma Su didn’t forget to warn everyone in the family not to speak of it.

“If you can’t keep your mouths shut and let people know that good things have been taken away, I’ll break your legs!”

Having received so much food, they were likely to attract attention. Many people in the village were struggling to get by recently.

Although the third son said no one saw, who knew? What if someone did?

Especially Liu Xiuying, she was like a stubborn piece of meat; if she saw it, she would snatch it back.

When Old Su Third returned to the main hall, he saw his mother leisurely holding a piece of cloth and measuring it, unsure if she intended to make a dress or pants.

“Third son, were these all sent to us by others? Was there a name on the package, and who sent it?”

After the initial excitement, Grandma Su thought of this very important question. Although she cherished these items, after accepting them, she had to know who her benefactor was.

“Mom, there’s also a letter. I almost forgot!” Old Su Third quickly took out a crumpled letter from his embrace and gave it to Grandma Su.

Grandma Su glared at him, “How can you be so unobservant? Does your mother know how to read those words?”

After scolding her son, Grandma Su asked Su San Gong to call Grandpa Su in, and then Su Shou Wen to read the letter.

“Read it for my good baby. This brat has only grown taller; he doesn’t read as nicely as good baby!” Grandpa Su looked at his eldest grandson with disdain, casting a kind gaze at Su Xiaotian.

Su Xiaotian felt awkward. Was her grandpa trying to create animosity towards her because her brothers doted on her so much?

“Grandpa, Eldest Brother should read it!” Su Xiaotian said softly.

Grandma Su also agreed with a smile, “Old man, I know you dote on Xiaotian, but Xiaotian is so young. Let the eldest son read it.”

Su Shou Wen didn’t know whether to hold the letter and read it or not.

“Read it!” Grandpa Su pouted and said.

Su Shou Wen then began to read the letter.

The short letter briefly stated the sender’s identity, mentioned that they were saved by Grandpa Su in their early years, later joined the revolution, and were now working in the provincial capital. It also mentioned that if they had time in the future, they would personally visit the Red Heart Brigade to see Grandpa Su.

Grandpa Su said emotionally, “I never expected that the little beggar from back then would achieve such success. I’ve helped so many people in my life, and only this child still remembers the kindness of those years!”

Su Xiaotian, however, was confused. She didn’t remember anything like this from her previous life. Or was she too young then to know anything?

But no matter what, with this “tiger skin,” she wouldn’t be afraid to use ration coupons and money in the future.

As the family was talking in the main hall, the main door was pushed open.

“I heard that Eldest Brother and Sister-in-law have struck it rich. Sister-in-law, it’s not that I, as your sister-in-law, am saying this, but how come you haven’t forgotten about us when my husband and Eldest Brother have the same mother and father? If you have good things, you shouldn’t forget about us, should you?” Liu Xiuying said directly, with a sense of entitlement.

Grandma Su was almost amused by the shameless Liu Xiuying.

“What are you talking about? Who said we struck it rich? Point them out to me, and I’ll tear their mouths apart. Are those mouths meant for eating and talking, or for defecating? How can anything come out of them?”

Grandma Su was also quite formidable when she cursed, making the younger generations in the family feel awkward, but they couldn’t help it.

Su Xiaotian listened with great interest. Her grandma had good fighting power.

It made sense that someone who had dealt with Liu Xiuying for so many years without being at a disadvantage would not be an ordinary person.

Liu Xiuying was thick-skinned. Even though Grandma Su had scolded her like this, she still looked unfazed.

What could a few scoldings do? Su Xiaoqin, that unlucky girl, said that the Su family had gotten a lot of good things, and they should at least get some back.

“Sister-in-law, it’s just asking for a few things from you, why are you so reluctant?”

“How about we combine our families’ things? You’re so generous anyway!” Grandma Su retorted.

Liu Xiuying wanted to take advantage but didn’t want to suffer a loss.

“Sister-in-law, what do we have? We can barely put food on the table,” Liu Xiuying said sheepishly.

“Really nothing? I remember your family received a lot of grain last year. That’s good, my family has many people and little grain, and we’re out!” Grandma Su said with a smile.

“Grain is nothing. Sister-in-law, I heard you have sugar and chicken cake! Give me some. My boys are very greedy.” Liu Xiuying continued to shamelessly say.

“No!” Grandma Su refused outright.

But Liu Xiuying turned and sat on the edge of the kang.

“Oh, there’s cloth here too. Sister-in-law, give me half. Jin Wa hasn’t worn new clothes in a long time.”

Seeing the piece of cloth on the kang, Liu Xiuying’s eyes almost lit up. This was the kind of cloth only city people had, different from what they wove themselves in the countryside.

“Alright, didn’t your family get ten catties of cotton last year? Give me half of that too,” Grandma Su said agreeably.

“That cotton is for making cotton-padded clothes for Jin Wa and Yin Wa,” Liu Xiuying immediately said. “Sister-in-law, you can’t be like this; you’re snatching things meant for children.”

“I want to make clothes for Tian Bao and Xiao Jiu with this cloth. How can you snatch it?” Grandma Su said with a serious expression.

Liu Xiuying was so angry that her flesh trembled.

This damned old woman actually wanted things from her family. She was dreaming!

Grandma Su didn’t miss the opportunity and continued leisurely, “Don’t think about getting freebies. Pigs and dogs eat for free, not people. Liu Xiuying, if you fancy anything of ours, bring something to exchange for it. I’m not an unreasonable person.”

Liu Xiuying was already angry, and now that she was scolded again, one could imagine how angry she was. In the end, she left in a huff!

Su Xiaoqin was waiting at home for Liu Xiuying to bring back good things, but she didn’t expect to see an angry Liu Xiuying return.
