beneath the lake—
Wei Yang wandered silently through the waters, his senses spreading out as he carefully probed the surroundings.
Hmm?
After a long while, he finally detected something unusual—an anomalous ripple appeared within his perception.
"There it is." Wei Yang lowered his gaze to a specific spot beneath him, and with a flicker of his body, he darted toward it.
Sinking slightly deeper, he arrived at the source of the disturbance.
The entire energy lake resembled a flattened sphere about ten li in diameter—like a massive disc laid flat beneath the earth.
Wei Yang was now located at the very center of this disc, approximately ninety to one hundred meters deep.
It was at this exact central point that he saw it—a space tunnel, roughly the size of a millstone, appeared within his view.
The tunnel resembled the mouth of a giant submerged pipeline, constantly gushing energy into the lake.
All the vast, boundless energy in the lake originated from this very source.
"Found it!" Wei Yang’s gaze locked onto the dark, swirling hole. Without hesitation, he sent his perception into the tunnel.
The spatial passage wasn’t particularly long—about a hundred meters or so.
Inside, the tunnel glimmered like a dim, psychedelic kaleidoscope—both obscure and dazzling at once.
As Wei Yang’s perception extended deeper, it passed smoothly through the tunnel and emerged on the other side.
Beyond the tunnel... lay a vast, endless void of utter darkness.
Wei Yang’s perception continued to spread into that space, but what greeted him was only pure, pitch-black emptiness.
At the same time, he sensed a vast, ancient, desolate, bone-chilling stillness—like he was suspended in the cold vacuum of the universe.
This was the scene Wei Yang perceived.
That millstone-sized tunnel functioned like a miniature spatial wormhole, forcibly linking a piece of boundless void with the Magic Beast Mountain Range.
It also resembled a funnel or energy conduit, constantly drawing in power from the deep recesses of the void.
But what struck Wei Yang as strange was—all the energy being drawn in... was purely wood attribute.
Wei Yang slowly retracted his perception and opened his previously closed eyes.
"Something’s off..." he murmured with a frown, deep in thought.
That vast void behind the tunnel should still be within the boundary of the world membrane.
If so, then the energy inside it should consist of multiple elemental types—not just a single one. Why then was there only wood attribute energy here? And not just any wood energy—it was incredibly dense and pure, continuously pouring in without pause.
If, on the other hand, the tunnel somehow led outside the world membrane, that would make even less sense.
Because the energy beyond the membrane is attribute-less. It only becomes elemental after being absorbed and transformed by the world membrane itself.
In other words, that’s what gives rise to Dou Qi.
Dou Qi is a signature energy unique to the Dou Qi Continent.
Other worlds don’t even possess this type of energy.
Take for example the world of Martial Ancestor Lin Dong—there, the energy system is entirely different, with no Dou Qi whatsoever.
Each world has its own unique energy system.
But generally speaking, these are all lower-tier energies, found in lower planes.
Only higher realms like the Great Thousand World possess more advanced forms—such as spiritual energy.
"The energy within the world membrane," Wei Yang mused, "is transformed by the membrane from the attribute-less energy beyond. It then becomes Dou Qi, which is spread throughout the world."
"And that transformed energy should be evenly distributed within the void—various elemental energies mixed together in balance."
"Just like the human stomach digests food and distributes nutrients evenly across the body."
"Similarly, the world membrane converts external energy into Dou Qi and spreads it across the heavens and earth in balanced proportions. All attributes—fire, water, wind, earth, wood, and so on—should exist in harmony."
"Heaven’s Dao is impartial. It doesn’t favor one element over another. For a world to function properly, the ’nutritional intake’ must be balanced."
"So for an entire pocket of void to be overflowing exclusively with highly pure wood attribute energy... That shouldn’t be possible."
"The only explanation is that there’s something special about the environment behind that tunnel."
"Which means—beyond that wormhole... there’s a strange and unknown environment that I haven’t yet discovered!"
"A special environment, huh?"
Wei Yang narrowed his eyes, staring at the tunnel before him.
He was debating whether or not to risk going in and taking a look.
When it came to special environments, he was no stranger.
On the Dou Qi Continent, the more unique and bizarre an environment, the more likely it was to produce rare and precious heaven and earth treasures.
But this would be his first time venturing into the depths of the endless void, and to be honest, he didn’t feel entirely confident.
After all, the deeper regions of the void were pitch-black, without direction or any point of reference.
In such a place, even distinguishing up from down or left from right could become impossible—making it all too easy to get lost.
A short while later—
"I’ll go take a look." Gritting his teeth, Wei Yang made his decision.
As long as he was careful and didn’t stray too far from the tunnel, there shouldn’t be too much danger.
He flipped his hand and pulled out a jade pendant. His fingers moved rapidly, forming a series of hand seals that imprinted several layers of protective seals onto the pendant—so it wouldn’t get crushed by the water pressure.
Then, he turned and tossed it into the lake behind him.
Watching the pendant sink, frozen in place like it had been sealed in amber, Wei Yang finally nodded in satisfaction.
Within the jade pendant was a fragment of his soul imprint—a personal coordinate marker, just in case something went wrong.
So long as he wasn’t too far away, he could always sense the pendant’s position. It functioned like a compass for his soul.
Only after making these preparations did Wei Yang take a deep breath. Then, he bent down and dove headfirst—naked—into the tunnel, disappearing from sight.
The tunnel, roughly the size of a millstone, was just large enough for him to crawl through.
Inside the dim, rainbow-hued space tunnel—
Wei Yang’s body moved slowly, gliding forward like a fish swimming upstream.
Because the tunnel constantly flowed with pure wood attribute energy, he was essentially swimming against the current. Combined with his caution, his pace was naturally not too fast.
But since the tunnel was only about a hundred meters long, it didn’t take long for him to reach the exit.
Looking ahead, he could already see the end of the kaleidoscopic tunnel.
At its terminus was a dark, circular opening—like a miniature black hole, quietly suspended in space, radiating an eerie stillness that made the heart tighten.
Wei Yang carefully swam to the mouth of the tunnel, peering through the black hole into the space beyond.
Outside was an empty, pitch-black expanse—so vast and barren it stirred a faint sense of dread.
Far, far in the distance, just barely within sight, one could occasionally catch the dull, fleeting streak of a falling meteor.
Like a thin silver line flickering across a vast black curtain, it appeared for a moment—then vanished without a trace.
Wei Yang released his perception outward through the tunnel’s exit, sweeping a ten-li radius around the area several times, ensuring there was no sign of danger.
Only then—
Whoosh~
He moved his body forward and slipped out of the tunnel.
Now standing within the endless void, an overwhelming sense of desolation, coldness, and deathly silence washed over him.
Wei Yang looked around in all directions. Aside from the millstone-sized black hole quietly hovering behind him, there was nothing else.
Just emptiness. Silence. Darkness. Desolation. Isolation.
The entire space was dim and oppressive. Even with Wei Yang’s exceptional eyesight, he couldn’t see far into the distance.
There was no sunlight, no moonlight, and not even a glimmer of starlight reached this place.
It seemed he had already drifted far, far away from the sun, moon, and stars—a true no-man’s land.
Of course, at his level, eyesight alone wasn’t enough—his perception was far more reliable.
As his perception spread like a finely tuned radar scan, everything within ten li came into sharp focus in his mind’s eye.
"So this... is the view from the depths of the endless void," Wei Yang murmured inwardly.
He looked upward—toward a point far beyond his reach.
Somewhere up there... was probably the world membrane.
