Chapter 53 Can’t Go Back?

Night fell.

Jiang Ye, carrying a shovel, headed to the low wall at the edge of the base to continue shoveling earth and raising it.

He couldn't sleep soundly without reinforcing this perimeter defense.

The night wind howled, rustling the snow oil grass covering the ground, making it surge like waves. The distant mountains were shrouded in darkness.

Not a single star was visible in the sky; dark clouds had gathered.

It was getting colder again.

Jiang Ye found the planet's climate extremely harsh. Summers were so hot that sweat poured out of him for doing nothing. Winters saw a relentless drop in temperature, getting colder day by day, enough to freeze anyone to death.

After an hour of work, he could no longer bear it.

The night wind was too chilly, and despite wearing two layers of cotton-padded clothes, he was shivering.

Looking outside the trench, the snow oil grass had gradually revived and was slowly growing again, advancing towards the trench. The distance was less than two meters, and in another hour, it would likely invade the trench.

Although this grass was harmless as long as it wasn't eaten, Jiang Ye, for reasons unknown, did not want it encroaching on his territory.

After a moment of hesitation, Jiang Ye returned to the base.

He opened the Galactic Mall.

A string of products appeared.

He selected the [Small Heating Stove].

At five thousand yuan each, he increased the quantity to four and bought all four!

After deducting twenty thousand yuan, his personal assets dropped to 1,822,900 yuan.

Jiang Ye spent ten minutes placing the four stoves at the base of the four walls.

He then carried a sack of coal, poured it into the stoves, and lit them with corn leaves.

The stoves burned fiercely, and heat permeated the air.

However, the heat quickly dissipated when hit by the cold wind.

But the snow oil grass around the base sensed the warmth and stopped advancing.

Jiang Ye was gratified. As long as these grasses didn't grow in, it was fine to burn a few more sacks of coal.

After all, a sack of coal only cost five hundred yuan. Was five hundred yuan still considered money?

Besides defense against the grass, the heat from the stoves also warmed Jiang Ye as he worked by the walls.

Although the heat was thin, it was better than nothing.

He swung his shovel and continued working.

He worked straight through until one in the morning, and the surrounding walls were finally completed!

The one-meter-high walls were airtight and solid, giving a sense of security.

Directly in front of the base vehicle, there was a five-meter-wide gap, where a two-meter-high wall had been built. Since there was no trench in front of this wall, it had to be made taller.

Now, the blood kangaroos leaping outside had to clear two meters to enter Jiang Ye's base.

And the scan results indicated that these blood kangaroos could jump at most 1.7 meters.

As long as no Olympic-level blood kangaroos appeared, there should be no problem.

However, the earthen walls still needed a final reinforcement. Although Jiang Ye had patted the walls with his shovel, the entire earthen wall was still quite loose. Without reinforcement, it could easily be broken down by the brute force of wild beasts.

Jiang Ye returned to the base and brought out a pot of clean water.

He went to the wall and slowly poured the water down the outer side from the top.

The pot of water was quickly emptied, flowing down the wall.

In just a few dozen seconds, the cold wind froze it all into ice!

Jiang Ye's method of reinforcement was to pour water and let it freeze.

This method was learned from historical records. During ancient winter battles, defending troops would pour water onto the city walls, forming layer upon layer of ice. Attacking soldiers, upon trying to climb, would find it too slippery and curse the defenders as insidious and shameless.

There was no water left in the base, so he had to heat the hot spring pool.

Jiang Ye slung both shotguns on his back, put two blood grenades in his pocket, and also tucked in a charged Black Star pistol.

The charged Black Star pistol was a gift from Gao Yu, and he hadn't tried it out yet. After all, it was something from a robot spy, and there might be some high-tech trickery involved.

For instance, it might explode upon firing, or behave like the kind and cunning guns in Stephen Chow's movies.

Jiang Ye dared not try the gun rashly. He could only carry it with him, and only in a critical moment of desperation would he draw it out to see if it would even fire. Under normal circumstances, this gun would never be used, and he would sell it immediately once he got a new handgun.

Grabbing the wall, he jumped up, using his hands and feet to climb to the top of the wall, and then carefully jumped into the trench.

With another leap, he climbed out of the trench and headed towards the hot spring pool.

The area around the hot spring pool was covered in snow oil grass, but the pool itself was not, possibly because it was covered in hard lake mud, preventing the grass from growing.

Jiang Ye used his usual method: throwing a grenade onto the lake surface to blast a large hole.

Then, he used the pot to scoop water and splash it onto the outer wall of the perimeter.

More and more ice solidified on the walls, shining brightly.

After several pots of water, the blasted lake surface froze over again.

Jiang Ye directly picked up large chunks of broken ice and threw them into the hot spring pool. Once the pool was half-filled with ice, he poured coal into the fire trough to heat it.

As the coal smoke rose, a peculiar phenomenon occurred. The snow oil grass near the hot spring pool withered at a visible rate. The plump grass blades split open, oozing a slightly whitish oil, and finally, the leaves turned yellow and curled up.

Indeed, as soon as the temperature rose, the snow oil grass couldn't survive.

Jiang Ye was not stingy. Whenever the fire in the fire trough dwindled, he would grab a handful of snow oil grass from nearby and throw it in to burn.

The oil in the snow oil grass was an excellent fuel, burning with crackling sparks and a bright flame.

The ice in the pool quickly melted into water, which he then scooped with the pot and splashed onto the walls.

After working for over two hours, he finally turned the entire outer wall into an ice wall by pouring water on it.

Jiang Ye was tired and prepared to go back to sleep.

However, as he walked down into the trench and looked up at the wall, which was over two meters high, he suddenly remembered something.

He hadn't left himself a way back!

Damn it! He was too tired and forgot something so important!

He tried to jump and grab the edge of the wall.

But the wall was covered in ice, and despite several attempts, he couldn't get a grip.

Who came up with such a devious plan? This was too slippery!

Jiang Ye was now quite certain that the defensive perimeter he had painstakingly built was indeed very effective, so effective that he himself couldn't get back over it!
