Chapter 122: Chapter 121: Settling In

Song Wei’s expression was too calm, making Wen Wan suspect that he’d already thought of this step when he proposed buying a house.

She raised her eyes to look at Song Wei, seeking an answer.

Song Wei lowered his gaze in return, "It’s a good idea, but not yet, let’s wait a while longer."

Wen Wan understood why he was hesitating.

Firstly, they had just arrived, and their priority was her husband’s studies; everything else had to take a back seat. Having just arrived in the Capital, he had to report and settle in at the Imperial College before considering anything else.

Secondly, her husband had said that he would only sell his collection to someone who truly understood its value, otherwise, he wouldn’t sell it to just anyone, even if the price offered was high.

Wen Wan had seized this opportunity to sell the jewelry her mother had left behind.

Before leaving, she had secretly brought some of it along without telling Song Wei, and now it could finally be of use.

Song Wei detected a hint of mischief in his wife’s sly glance, "Did you really bring the jewelry with you?"

Wen Wan nodded guiltily.

Song Wei didn’t intend to blame her, "Don’t rush to sell them yet, wait until I’m familiar with the Capital, then I’ll personally help you sell them, otherwise people will see that you’re inexperienced and offer a low price."

So, did he agree to her selling the jewelry?

Wen Wan breathed a sigh of relief.

But Song Wei wasn’t thinking about that.

Now that they were in the Capital’s jurisdiction, the things in Wanwan’s possession should not be let out, or else it might bring trouble.

As for buying property, they would wait until he actually became an official.

During the day when Song Wei went with the businessman to handle the transfer procedures, Wen Wan and Song Fang only had time to buy some bedding for the bed, and didn’t get around to stocking the kitchen with rice, flour, oil, and salt, so they couldn’t have dinner at home.

Wen Wan let Song Wei choose a room in the West Wing to use as his study, and took her sister-in-law out for a stroll.

The location was quite good, not far from the alley entrance there was a vegetable market, the road wasn’t complicated, just a few trips and they would remember it.

Afraid her husband would go hungry at home, Wen Wan didn’t dare delay, she had her sister-in-law buy a dozen steaming buns, she bought some eggs and tomatoes, and added some condiments and pickles, planning to eat the buns with pickles tonight, and make a simple dumpling soup, and then properly arrange things the next morning.

Song Fang was waiting outside the market with the buns, and when she saw Wen Wan come out, she lowered her head and murmured, "I looked carefully earlier and couldn’t see where they sell firewood. I just casually asked someone, and that’s when I found out that there’s no firewood in the Capital, it’s all coal, and it’s divided into several kinds, the cheap ones have a lot of smoke and are hard to burn, the good ones are expensive.

Little sister-in-law, isn’t there no poor people in the Capital? Just eating a mouthful of cabbage costs money. In our countryside, isn’t there everything in the garden? I raised more than ten hens a year and didn’t even know how many eggs they laid!

As soon as we got to the Capital, goodness, all the money went into other people’s pockets. I’ve been thinking, life’s too expensive in the Capital, if it weren’t for following Third Brother here, I really couldn’t afford it."

Wen Wan chuckled.

That’s why they say it’s under the Emperor’s feet? Naturally, the countryside can’t be compared to the Capital.

"Don’t laugh," Song Fang said, increasingly disheartened, "Fortunately, our family has some savings, otherwise Third Brother’s trip to the Capital could be really embarrassing!"

Song Wei had asked their parents to keep the matter of selling antiques a secret, so Song Fang had no idea. She always thought the expenses for their trip to Beijing and buying the house were supported by their parents.

Back home, Song Fang put the buns on the table, Wen Wan washed her hands and went to the kitchen to prepare the dumpling soup.

Song Wei had chosen the room on the right in the West Wing as his study, and hearing noise outside, he closed the door and came out.

Turning around, he saw Song Fang standing in the courtyard and asked, "Where’s your sister-in-law?"

"She’s in the kitchen!" Song Fang said, "Little sister-in-law said she’s exhausted from today, didn’t have time to prepare all the kitchenware, tonight we’ll manage with what’s available, and tomorrow I’ll accompany her to buy pots, bowls, and all, she doesn’t like using things that others have used."
