Chapter 144: The Operation Was Advanced
On the last night, Zachary stayed with her all night in the hospital room.
The woman lay in the man’s arms on the wide bed.
She was tiny, like a beautiful delicate doll.
To ease her nervousness, Zachary was reading her a story.
The reading was from the easy-to- understand but classic book, Little Prince. Yvonne had read it many times, but there was a different kind of comfort and sensuality from Zachary’s voice.
"If you love a flower which happens to be on a star, it is sweet at night to gaze at the sky. All the stars are a riot of flowers."
"Zachary."
"Here."
Yvonne heard her shallow breathing.
Her belly was so big by this time that sometimes it seemed like her tiny body couldn’t afford it.
But she was still strong enough to persist and to give birth to her baby.
"If I leave one day, will you take care of the little baby?"
The man hugged her, holding her in his arms, with the book in his left hand.
"You’ll stay with me forever."
"I mean, if."
"No if."
"Are all men like this? When you ask him what if and he’ll tell you there’s no if directly. I don’t want to talk with you anymore. You have no imagination at all."
Yvonne complained.
"Do you have any other men?"
"Expect for the jealous imagination."
Really.
Zachary was a person who, felt that someone was trying to steal his wife every day.
It was simply fictitious.
However...
It was pretty cute, too.
In the latter part of the night, Yvonne got tired.
She didn’t know why. This time she was so tired that she could barely keep her eyes open.
There were several times when Zachary spoke to her, but she couldn’t answer.
The moonlight outside was quiet and beautiful. The curtains were not fully drawn, and the moonlight leaked onto the bed like silvery water.
Half of Yvonne’s body was immersed in the cold moonlight and she was lying in Zachary’s arms. The picture was as beautiful as a constructed shot in a movie.
"Yvonne?"
Yvonne replied with no energy.
"Sleep?"
He asked her if she wanted to sleep, but she forced herself to be awake.
Finally, Zachary thought that she was too tired like this and forced her to sleep.
She said, "Well, then, honey, could you go and get me a bottle of milk?"
"I’ll have it sent over."
Yvonne said, "It’s too late, and it’s not good to bother others like this. It’s very close."
"I’m going to stay here with you."
The man refused.
"It’ll only take two minutes. Hurry to go and hurry to get back. Be quick, I’m dying of thirst."
"All right then."
The man was a little helpless and kissed her brow dotingly.
"You behave yourself alone."
"Okay."
After the words, Yvonne looked at the man’s distant figure.
Finally, she burst a bit bitterness.
She watched the back figure blurred slowly in her vision, soaked with tears. It also said in the Little Prince that
"If you want to tame a person , will risk tears."
She was lucky that the man she loved also loved her, but...
*
When Zachary returned with the milk, he also held a small cookie in his hand that Yvonne usually liked to eat.
He thought that Yvonne might be hungry, so he bought some cookies for her to eat with milk.
However, as he passed through the hallway of the maternity hotels, a group of nurses and doctors hurried toward a room.
On this floor, there was only one pregnant woman, Yvonne Taylor.
So, all these people went to Yvonne’s room.
...
But it was not the time for operation!
The man’s face got gloomy instantly.
He quickened his pace, faster and faster, faster and faster.
Until he saw Yvonne’s pale face and was wheeled into the operating room, Zachary rushed up to ask.
"What’s wrong with her?"
"Mrs. Leinster’s heartbeat and blood pressure are abnormal, we’re going to advance the operation now."
"Abnormal?"
Zachary’s face looked a little horrified, "How comes it’s abnormal?"
"Don’t worry Mr. Leinster, please be patient."
The nurse left a message and then went inside the ward.
This sudden turn was too much for him to accept.
Wasn’t everything fine just a moment ago, and why was the operation advanced suddenly?
But he couldn’t do anything other than wait patiently.
The waiting was full of torment and pain.
Zachary didn’t know how long had passed before the surgical lights went out.
Yesmina and Frank also came. Jack went back to home to see Yvonne specially several times during her pregnancy. He heard that tomorrow was the delivery date, so he took an overnight flight back and was still on the plane.
Simon, on the other hand, had recently gone to Africa and posted congratulatory gifts, as well as tonic products to Yvonne. But he did not come in person.
The ones in the hospital now were Yesmina, Frank and Zachary.
Everyone rushed up to the doctor instantly when the doctor walked out.
"How is my daughter?"
"How’s my wife?"
"The baby is healthy, congratulations! They are boy-girl twins."
Zachary froze for a moment.
Boy-girl twins. It was unexpected.
During the examination of gestational sacs, both Zachary and Yvonne already knew
that they were twins, but they didn’t except that they were boy-girl twins.
After all, the chances of boy-girl twins were really small.
They didn’t check the gender intentionally.
But then, the man’s face cooled down again.
"How’s my wife?"
The doctor did not say anything at first, as if there were something bad happened.
Frank and Yesmina looked at each other and also sensed that something was wrong.
"Doctor, how is our daughter?"
The doctor took a deep breath. He knew that the three big shots in front of him could not be offended, and the one inside was even more precious.
But it was such an unfortunate coincidence that the most important pregnant woman went through a situation that he had never seen in his twenty years of medical practice.
"All of Miss Taylor’s vital signs were normal at first. But she went through unforeseen circumstances during delivery.
"No hemorrhoea or obstructed labor occurred, and the operation was successful. But her indicators kept dropping... We used a lot of approaches and resuscitated at the first time. But..."
"Go on."
Zachary’s voice turned extremely cold.
"Miss Taylor remains unconscious. According to our past experience... She is likely to be in an irreversible coma."
When Yesmina heard these words, she was unable to stand firmly.
Frank stepped forward to hold her, and took another step forward.
"What do you mean by irreversible coma?"
"Irreversible coma refers to a specific state of the human body in which cognitive abilities, including awareness of one’s own existence, are completely lost. There is no active activity, except for the some instinctive neural reflexes and the ability to carry out the metabolism of substances and energy.
"It’s what we call the plant man."
...
Vegetative state?
Yesmina got out from Frank’s arms and stood still. Her emotion was somewhat out of control.
"Why? Why?"
The other day... Everything went well the other day!"
The doctor shook his head and said, "We find no causes or signs at this point. Strictly speaking, the diagnosis of a plant man is confirmed by a long lasting coma. So it’s too soon to make a definitive statement.
"But we have taken all sorts of evocative treatments, none of which had any effect on Miss Taylor."
Everything turned dark before Yesmina’s eyes.
The doctor looked at their faces and continued.
"Fortunately, Miss Taylor’s breathing, heart rate and blood pressure are all normal and stable now. It is certain that there is no life threatening... We just cannot tell when she will wake up.
"We’ll contact the top experts in the national association. So don’t worry."
*
Yesmina fainted directly when hearing the news.
But the doctor said that there was nothing seriously wrong with Yesmina. It was just because that she was stimulated and needed time to calm down properly.
Frank’s face was heavy when he came out of Yesmina’s ward. He saw Zachary, who had been standing quietly in black at the entrance.
In the hallway, the man stood alone for a long time.
Zachary was expressionless, as if he didn’t move since he heard the news.
"I don’t know when she’ll wake up," the doctor’s words kept repeating in his head.
So... Yvonne...
He could still remember the last sentence she had said to him before she went into surgery.
She said so lovely that she wanted milk.
But just a few minutes later, he could no longer hear her voice or see her laugh.
The feeling was so painful.
It was like a black sky cascading down to crush him. He was suffocating, depressing,
and dared not to accept the truth.
Frank’s heart was heavy, too.
However, looking at Zachary’s appearance, he, as an elder, still braced his emotions and went forward to say.
"Don’t worry.
"Since the doctor said that Yvonne’s body functions are normal, maybe it’s just a temporary coma. Maybe she’ll wake up tomorrow.
"Her mother and I will contact the top medical experts. The Leinster Family also knows quite a few top experts as well. So we’ll gather all our strengths, as a result, Yvonne will definitely revive soon."
Zachary didn’t say anything.
According to his usual strong and stoic heart, he was able to response to Frank calmly at this time.
When his mother passed away, Jack calmed him and his brothers. He held back his tears and nodded.
But today, it was as if he hadn’t heard Frank’s words at all.
He had blocked out the outside world and even didn’t have a look of his two babies. All he could think about was that warm but slightly pale smile of Yvonne before he left the ward.
Including this time,
she looked at him as if with some special feelings in her eyes. But the feelings were hidden so deeply that he still couldn’t figure out what she thought.
And the deepest feeling he had now was regret.
Sure, regret.
He seldom had such emotions.
But this time, he really regretted it.
As if things would not turn out the way they did without the two minutes he left.
He should have known that she pretended to be strong to keep him off.
As soon as he was gone, she closed her eyes in exhaustion.
He wondered.
Why didn’t... he notice it at first?
Why? Why he didn’t stay with her?
Why didn’t he give her another hug.
