Chapter 385: Chapter 364: I am your brother, what right do you have to order me!
There was still a hint of insomnia in the air. Xiao Lin stared with his eyes open. Without Xia Xue by his side, it became particularly easy to be startled awake from sleep. Habits are indeed not a good thing. He wasn’t someone who would develop dependency, so nostalgia, because of this habit and dependency, became profound.
In the underground city, there were only assassins, no employers, so the underground city is not a city operating below the surface. It must have its own intelligence organization system, but where are they? The strict division from employers is another form of protection for the assassin organization. Originally, he thought entering the underground city could bring new gains, but in fact, it wasn’t that he gained nothing, but rather that he didn’t obtain the information he desired.
Left foot first, followed closely by the right foot.
Xiao Lin roamed slowly on the near-deserted streets, as if yesterday’s showdown had already concluded in his dreams. There were fewer people. Although the bloody air wasn’t so heavy, it was still impossible to cover up the scent even if it had been processed.
A lot of people died, right! Xiao Lin thought, suddenly recalling yesterday’s mission. It felt as if this showdown was nothing more than a play, or perhaps it was just a process of reorganization within the assassin organization! Haha, no matter how it goes, it doesn’t have much to do with him. Just thinking of Xiang Fei, he seemed to have brought a trouble upon himself. Being targeted by the assassin organization, life wouldn’t come easy.
In his hand was a bottle of fresh milk and a few slices of bread. The treatment in the underground city was somewhat humane. As soon as he walked out, he could see the food placed on a small table at the door, covered with a lid.
Xiao Lin thought of a word to describe the staff here: ghost! There is no word more fitting than ghost.
Above him, pipes extended, much simpler compared to those in the Dragon Soul’s underground passages. Walking past some rooms, he occasionally witnessed the flow of underground water. Judging by its flow, there should be other exits here — the water is running water.
"Stop!" a cold voice suddenly rang out.
Xiao Lin stopped walking, moved his left foot back a step, swirled the air, followed by the right foot making a half-round turn, then another half turn, and looked at the person who issued the order. In Xiao Lin’s eyes, muddled as they were, there was no vigor. The man, with a belly so fat, couldn’t even see his own toes.
"This is a forbidden area, entry is prohibited."
"Ah!" Xiao Lin opened his mouth, but without a sound from his throat, then moved his left foot out, followed by his right foot, walking back around the man.
The underground city seemed peaceful and free but was filled with covert posts everywhere.
"Code number!"
Hey! Xiao Lin couldn’t help but sigh inwardly. This meticulous caution approaching the extent of Dragon Soul indeed did not overlook a single omission.
"’DOMO73895’"
The man gave him a glance, spoke few words, and then disappeared. This left Xiao Lin feeling vexed. What was with this code? This special treatment had left him clueless to a certain degree.
"DOMO73895!" The monitor screen zoomed in, a mediocre face without small eyes always squinting, with flesh under the chin that would occasionally quiver, dense and somewhat curly hair — he was very nondescript.
"What do you think?"
"He’s not DOMO!" The individual who answered was very firm, lacking any hint of doubt, not even willing to cast another glance at the man on screen, as if looking at him was an insult.
"Ah!" The person sitting before the monitor found it interesting to enlarge the image again. Unlike the latter, he looked closely, almost glued to the display, examining this robust and seemingly ordinary man.
"Lao Jiu, can you stop being so disgusting?" With a tug, he was pulled away from the screen. A casual glance at it brought a stir to the stomach.
"Lao Qing!" The seated person turned his head, smiling at the person behind him who bore his same appearance: "Do you see a piece of skin that isn’t properly attached here?"
"What?" In a corner of the image, about a small toenail-sized thin piece peeled back in front of the lens.
"Zoom in some more, not at his face."
Screenshot and zoom-in, Lao Qing touched his chin. "This is a human skin. How did this person get here?"
"Seeking asylum!" Lao Jiu placed his legs on the table, fanning with his Feather Fan: "Do you think perhaps the rule where we only recognize numbers, not individuals, should be changed here?"
"Change my ass!" Lao Qing spat. He wasn’t about to tire himself and his Deadpool buddies because of this one man.
Lao Jiu chuckled, his crimson eyes had firmly captured the person in the footage: "Not changing is fine too. Then could you trouble yourself to send some people over to test him?"
"No!" Lao Qing sulked and walked to the lens, switching the display back to its original format.
The portly man’s awkward gait agitated him more.
"You must go." Lao Jiu turned his chair to face Lao Qing, and though they were twins, their personality differences readily distinguished them.
"I’m your older brother, on what grounds do you command me!" Lao Qing’s eyes flared with anger, dissatisfied with impish Lao Jiu, despising his scarlet eyes even more.
"Because I am the City Lord of the underground city." The nonchalant words floated out, igniting Lao Qing’s fury even more.
"I don’t want to fight!" Lao Jiu slid back on his chair to avoid Lao Qing’s attack. Indeed, such scenes were frequent, yet each time ended in his favor. Not because Lao Qing was weak, but because he remained calmer.
"This person only stays for three days. I will monitor him until he leaves." Lao Qing said a bit wrathfully.
"That’s far from enough!" Lao Jiu carried a layer of worry, fearing something significant might occur due to the recent excessive tranquility.
"Because of Consort Ling’s issue?"
Lao Qing watched as the person in the footage covered the entire underground city with his peculiar gait and couldn’t help commenting.
"Yesterday, nearly everyone under suspicion has been dealt with. The outcome is what that group wanted. What are you still concerned about?"
"It’s precisely because nearly everything was dealt with that makes it more distressing. These people aren’t nearly a match for Consort Ling, right?" Lao Jiu entered a string of secret characters on the keyboard, accessing a comprehensive database. After inputting ’Xiao Lin’ in the search box, the screen displayed over ten pieces of information.
"This individual has frequently appeared on our assassin list. Although not ranked high, none have returned alive to collect commission money."
"Isn’t that great? We can still earn money for incomplete jobs?" he peeled a peanut, tossed it into his mouth, then broke off a piece of chocolate for Lao Jiu.
"Watch your hypoglycemia."
"According to the data, this person named Xiao Lin is just an emergency room doctor at Yan University Hospital." (To be continued. If you like this work, feel free to visit Qidian () to vote for recommendations and monthly tickets. Your support is my biggest motivation.)
