Chapter 843: The Final Details
Theo had an epic weekend at Catadrid with Aurora and Ayia basking on his Moonlight success. But we have to tell the story of Ryoko as she stayed in Elffire City coordinating and finishing the last few details before the [SAO] Anime debut, next Thursday, April 1st.
Saturday Morning – 7:45 AM
The Spark of Dawn
The first rays of sunlight pierced through the glass façade of Tokyo Animation Studios, casting golden streaks across the animation department’s workstations. Ryoko Riverdale stood at the center of the floor, her blue hair tied into a no-nonsense ponytail, a tablet clutched in one hand and a half-empty coffee cup in the other. The weekend had officially begun, but for Ryoko and her team, it was just another battlefield.
"Listen up!" Her voice cut through the hum of computers. Every head turned—animators, editors, and sound engineers frozen mid-task. "Theo’s busy this weekend, but we’re not here to babysit his ego. This trailer isn’t just a preview—it’s our declaration. By Monday morning, I want it at least to compete with the other Season animes’ trailers; Understood?"
A chorus of determined "Yes, Director!" echoed back.
Ryoko’s assistant, Amber Kaur, materialized at her side, holographic schedules glowing on her wrist device. "Trailer storyboards approved. Music team’s waiting for final sync. Marketing wants a rough cut by noon."
"They’ll get it when it’s ready," Ryoko said, already striding toward the art department. "Tell Ally Riddle to stop breathing down my neck and focus on her billboards."
Saturday Morning – 9:30 AM
Art Department: Where Worlds Collide
Brianna Shiori, Head of Art, stood surrounded by towering screens displaying SAO’s floating castle of Aincrad. Her team huddled around a shared workstation, arguing over the trailer’s opening shot.
"Start with Kirito drawing his sword," insisted a junior animator. "Iconic!"
"Too generic," Brianna countered, twirling a stylus like a baton. "First frame should be the falling. Players diving into the game from the real world—blur the line between reality and Aincrad."
Bruno Takehiro, Background Art Chief, nodded silently. His fingers danced across a tablet, morphing rough sketches into a breathtaking panorama: thousands of glowing players plummeting toward the game’s starting city, their avatars disintegrating into pixels mid-air.
"Perfect," Brianna breathed. "Now add Theo’s signature touch—that silver shimmer in their hair."
Ryoko leaned over Bruno’s shoulder. "Subtle. Just a flicker. We’re teasing, not spoiling."
As the team worked, Amber’s voice crackled over the intercom: "Music Department’s ready for you, Director."
Saturday Afternoon – 1:15 PM
Soundstage Symphony
Koshikawa Kyo, Head of Music, stood bathed in the crimson light of the recording booth. Before her, the trailer’s temp track played—a placeholder mix of clashing guitars and synthetic choirs.
"This will not do," Kyo muttered, yanking off her headphones. "Where’s the heart?"
Her team froze. Kyo closed her eyes, recalling Theo’s advice during their last session: "Soundtracks aren’t background noise. They’re the audience’s heartbeat."
"Scrap the electric guitars," she ordered. "Bring in the koto. Blend traditional Yamatese strings with synth waves. And here—" She stabbed a finger at the timestamp where Kirito and Asuna’s hands nearly touched. "Silence. Two full seconds of silence before the chorus hits."
In the control room, Ryoko watched through soundproof glass. "She’s good."
"She is a genius musician and together with Theo, they are the best." Amber noted.
"Theo didn’t train her—he got out of her way."
As the first haunting notes of the revised track filled the studio, even the janitor paused to listen.
Saturday Evening – 6:45 PM
Marketing’s War Room
Three floors below, Marketing Head Ally Riddle presided over a hive of social media strategists. Wallscreens displayed real-time analytics:

trailer – 2.1M views"Pathetic," Ally sneered, pacing before her team. "By midnight, I want our teaser clips on every influencer’s feed from here to Catadrid and Sakura City. Nakahara!"
A junior marketer jumped. "Y-Yes?"
"Contact those VTubers we scouted. Offer exclusive Aincrad avatar filters if they livestream our countdown."
"But Director Riverdale hasn’t approved—"
"I’ll handle Mrs. Riverdale. You handle the algorithm."
Upstairs, Ryoko scowled at an alert on her tablet: "@AnimeFanatic99: Tokyo Studios who? Lol, another indie flop."
"Amber. Double the budget for Sakura City billboards. I want Aincrad looming over every train station."
Sunday Morning – 8:00 AM
The Editing Crucible
Nora Wells, Head of Editing, glared at the timeline sprawled across her 8K monitor. The trailer’s current cut: 2 minutes, 17 seconds.
"Too slow," she muttered, slicing frames from a panning shot of Aincrad. "Too fast," she growled, reinstating them.
Her protégé, Araya Baker, hovered nervously. "The pacing guidelines say—"
"Pacing guidelines don’t account for soul," Nora snapped. "Here—Asuna’s smirk stays. The sword clash gets half a second less."
In the corner, Theo’s hologram flickered—a pre-recorded message from Catadrid: "Trust your instincts, Nora. That’s why I made you Series Director."
She paused, then deleted an entire scene of generic monster battles. "More character. Less spectacle."
When Ryoko reviewed the revised cut an hour later, she allowed herself a rare smile. "Now that’s storytelling."
Sunday Afternoon – 3:30 PM
Final Render: All Hands on Deck
The air crackled with tension as Mitsue Koi’s animation team initiated the final render.
"CPU usage at 98%," warned a tech.
"Divert power from non-essential systems," Mitsue ordered.
Lights dimmed across the studio as every ounce of energy fed the rendering farm. Zofia Webb paced behind the animators, critiquing every pixel:
"More refraction on the lake here—Kirito’s reflection should show his human face, not his avatar."
In the cafeteria, Brianna and Bruno snuck naps under tables, sketchpads clutched to their chests.
Sunday Evening – 8:00 PM
The Trailer Unleashed
Ryoko stood before the entire studio, the finished trailer glowing behind her.
"Five months ago," she began, "Theo bet everything on us. Not because we were perfect, but because we were hungry. This—" She gestured to the screen. "—is our first bite. Let the world feel it."
As the trailer rolled, the room stilled:
0:01: A single piano note.0:03: Players falling, reality fracturing.0:17: Kirito’s sword ignites—silver hair catching virtual moonlight.1:49: Asuna’s battle cry synced to Kyo’s koto crescendo.2:14: Title card: SWORD ART ONLINE – 04.01
Silence. Then—
Brianna whooped, flinging her stylus. Bruno actually smiled. Kyo wiped her eyes.
CLAP CLAP CLAP
The room was loud with everyone clapping in happiness for the good work they managed to do.
Ryoko allowed herself three seconds of pride before snapping: "Celebrate on your own time. We’ve still got 72 hours until the premiere. Back to work!"
But as the team dispersed, she caught Amber texting Theo:
Amber: Trailer done. We’ll post it sometime before tomorrow.
Theo: Tell Ryoko she’s worth every credit I’m paying her.
Ryoko smirked when she saw that.
