Chapter 72: Chapter 72: Precarious Situation

Yue Ning noticed the change in his expression, and she frowned.

"What’s wrong?" She asked with a whisper

.

Huo Feng shook his head, and calmly placed his phone into his pocket. "Nothing is wrong."

Yue Ning narrowed her eyes. "Strange." She murmured under her breath.

’Host, I don’t know why but I feel something is about to happen,’ the system spoke up.

"Do you think it’s related to the message he got?" Yue Ning asked mentally as she played with her fingers.

’It could be possible. Just be alert so you won’t be caught offguard,’ the system advised.

Yue Ning nodded. Even without the system’s words, she would do just that.

"I don’t want to see her. Her presence disgusts me."

Old Madam Huo’s words snapped her out of her conversation with the system.

"Don’t worry, Mom. I’ll take her home. Once you’ve been discharged, then we can settle this issue," Huo Hapieng said, a look of disgust appearing in his eyes as he glanced at Zhang Yuxiu who was in a pathetic state.

"Just go, we will discuss this when I get home."

After hearing her words, Huo Hapieng walked out. He didn’t forget to glance at Zhang Yuxiu who hurriedly rushed after him.

"Grandma, I have something to do at the office today. I’ll be taking my leave as well," Huo Mingjie spoke up after his parents had left.

Old Madam Huo waved her hands, signifying that he could leave.

He bowed, and left the ward. Huo Fei followed him, she couldn’t stay anymore.

After the members of the second branch left, the ward fell into a comfortable silence, devoid of the earlier confrontations and arguments.

The doctor came in, having a smile on his face. He checked Old Madam Huo’s vitals, and he nodded satisfactorily.

Old Madam Huo had already fallen asleep. Her chest rose and fell softly while the monitors beeped steadily.

"She is recovering well. If everything is all good, then she can be discharged tomorrow." The doctor was all smiles as he announced to them.

"Thank you doctor." Huo Feng let out a soft smile.

"I would actually want to have a word with you. Can I see you privately?" The doctor asked.

Huo Feng looked at both ladies, and the earlier message he received flashed in his mind. He furrowed his brows slightly while wondering if he should leave or not.

He only deliberated for a few seconds before he walked out with the doctor.

"Yanyan and Ning Ning are here. There are guards outside the ward. What could go wrong?" He mumbled under his breath as he followed the doctor out.

Only if he was aware of what would happen in a few minutes, then he wouldn’t have left the ward no matter what.

After he left, the ward fell silent as the two women busied themselves.

Yue Ning glanced at Huo Yan who had a bright smile on her face while she typed furiously on her phone.

Yue Ning smiled curiously, moving closer to Huo Yan.

"Who are you chatting with? Do you have a boyfriend now?"

Yue Ning’s voice caused Huo Yan’s phone to almost fall.

"Sister-in-law," she whined, a red hue appearing on both cheeks.

Yue Ning chuckled. "It seemed I guessed right, didn’t I?"

"He is not my boyfriend... at least not yet," Huo Yan admitted with her head lowered, her voice was barely a whisper as her ears turned crimson.

"Not bad. Our Huo Yan is an adult." Yue Ning teased. "I do hope he is a nice guy."

"You don’t have to worry sister-in-law. He is a nice guy." Huo Yan’s smile softened. It was dreamy and genuine.

Yue Ning could see it in her eyes that Huo Yan really liked the guy.

"I won’t disturb you. I’ll just use the restroom real quick," Yue Ning smiled, and walked to the restroom.

The door opened quietly, and a man in a white coat stepped inside, a stethoscope hanging around his neck and a clipboard in his hand. His smile was polite, almost identical to the doctor who had just left.

Huo Yan looked up sensing someone had come in. She frowned seeing the man. "And you are?"

"Doctor," he replied smoothly with a clipped tone.

Her frown deepened. "But the doctor already came by. In fact, he just left with my brother. Who are you and why are you here again?"

"Routine check," he answered quickly, walking toward the IV stand. His eyes flickered with impatience, clearly irritated.

Huo Yan narrowed her eyes, then pushed herself up from the chair. She moved closer to the bed, until she stood between the man and the IV.

"Don’t lie. The attending doctor already examined my grandmother. It’s too early for another check. Who are you really?" she demanded, arms folded, daring him to explain.

The man’s jaw tightened. He hadn’t expected her to confront him so directly. He hadn’t expected so much defiance from someone as young as her.

"You ask too many questions," he hissed, his voice dripping with annoyance.

Before she could react, his hand shot out. With a sharp shove, he threw her backward.

"Ah!" Huo Yan cried out as her body hit the wall near the bed, pain exploding through her skull before she slumped to the floor.

The man didn’t waste another second. He snatched a syringe from his pocket and plunged it into the IV line. A clear liquid slid down the tube.

Almost instantly, Old Madam Huo’s fingers twitched violently. The steady beeping of the heart monitor spiked into erratic alarms. Her eyelids fluttered, her chest heaving as if her body were fighting something unseen.

On the floor, Huo Yan’s blurred gaze was fixed on her grandmother’s hand jerking unnaturally. Fear cut through the pain clouding her senses. "Grandma!" she croaked, forcing her body to move despite the dizziness pressing her down.

At that moment, the restroom door creaked open. Yue Ning stepped out, frowning at the sound of the alarm, only to freeze as her eyes landed on the scene..Old Madam Huo’s body was convulsing, the impostor was by the IV, and Huo Yan struggled on the floor.

Her heart dropped instantly, her breath catching in her throat. Instantly, rage and fury flashed across her eyes.

Beep!

The sound of the flatline resounded in the ward.
